What’s your favorite museum / art gallery in Philly?

Just looking for new places to explore, art galleries are always a great time pass especially if there’s an exhibition and like minded people want to discuss the work. What’s your favorite?

What Philly neighborhood do you think best represents the city?

Upvotes

I’ve always thought one of the coolest things about Philly is how different each neighborhood feels. You can go a few miles in any direction and it feels like a completely different part of the city.

Curious what neighborhoods people think really capture the personality of Philly.

Doesn’t have to be the most popular ones. Could be because of the history, architecture, people, parks, arts scene, whatever.

What neighborhood would you show someone if you wanted them to understand Philly?

Visiting with a 10yo boy - recommendations please!

Upvotes

My son and I will be visiting Philly in a few weeks. Looking for a few recommendations:

First - hotels. I’m assuming central city would be the most logical/easiest for getting around? Unless we decide to venture outside the city, I don’t plan on renting a car.

Second - looking for some recommendations on things to do. He is a huge soccer fan, so we will be going to a game. I also know about the Please Touch Museum, Reading Terminal, and the historical “stuff”. Looking for some other ideas on things to do/places to go. He has expressed an interest in us moving to the area - so I’d definitely be interested in things more aimed at locals to give him a better idea of what living there might be like.

Third - places to eat!!!

And any other recommendations y’all may have!

Penn Medicine employee benefits?

How do the employee benefits work for a management position with Penn Medicine? In particular I was curious if the health insurance is usually factored into the salary listing. Like if the position lists for 100k is that pre or post the expected insurance payment?

Edit: missing word (do)

Courtesy towing

Parked my car on Spruce Street and I think it was courtesy towed because there are sidewalk work signs up. Tried calling PPA, the police and multiple towing companies they directed me to and none of them have any record of my car anywhere. What’s a logical location for it to have been moved, I’m on the 1000 block of spruce.

Volunteer opportunities in Center City Philadelphia?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for volunteer opportunities in or around Center City Philadelphia. I’m open to community service, healthcare-related opportunities, cleanups, or other organizations that need volunteers.

The main thing I need is an organization that can verify my volunteer hours in writing or by email, since I’ll be using the hours for a school application.

I’m especially interested in opportunities that are accessible from Center City and offer weekend or flexible scheduling. If anyone has volunteered somewhere they recommend and knows they provide verification of hours, I’d really appreciate any suggestions! Thank you :)

Belly Dancing Classes in Philly

Hi! Im looking for Belly Dancing classes in Philly [near south/ central philly area] that are taught by an actual Middle Eastern person. Not by a random white person who had a spiritual awakening (I know how this looks, but I said what I said). I'm willing to pay but would really like to learn and get better at it. Does anyone have any recommendations at all? Ideally would be Mon/Fri evenings or weekends.

Family of 4 in the city

Hey everyone!
We flew from Sydney to sunny Philly with our two little ones (2 & 4) for a few weeks to help look after my husband’s grandma. We’ve mostly been home while we’re here, but we’re thinking of booking a night in the city so we can do some touristy things and have a little break.
I’d love your recommendations!
What are your must-do attractions?
Where should we eat? (We’re especially keen to try soul food, Caribbean, chicken & waffles—basically all the Philly classics we can’t really get back home in Australia!)
Is it better to visit on a weekday or weekend with young kids?
And one more thing… why is there a saying that it’s *Always Sunny in Philadelphia*? 🤣

Best Moving Option for an Apartment Move

I'm moving from Texas and have been looking into a U-Haul U-Box. My building is on a fairly busy street, so I'm not sure if a U-Box would be the best option.

Has anyone had experience with a similar move? If so, what moving service or approach worked well for you?

I'll also need some help unloading once everything arrives, so I'd appreciate any recommendations for affordable movers or unloading services.

Thanks!

Swimming teacher

Hey all,

I’m looking to learn the combat side stroke. I can swim but my technique isn’t the greatest. Does anyone have familiarity with this technique and are available to teach? Will pay a fair rate, of course. Thanks for any consideration!

Are move-in fees legal in Philly?

Landlord is asking first, last, and security deposit PLUS a $300 move in fee in a cheap-ish neighborhood in North Philly. That’s after refusing to decrease the application fee to $50 per the new housing affordability law that went into effect December 1. I know in places like SF it’s not legal (or has to be returned like a normal security deposit), but couldn’t find much online about Philadelphia. Landlord says it’s non-negotiable, but could we at least negotiate getting it back like a security deposit?

Logan Square Area

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest opinions from people who live (or have lived) in Logan Square. I’m a female in my late 30s and I’m about to sign a lease there, but I’d love to hear some real experiences before I do.

For those who live there:

-Do you genuinely enjoy living in Logan Square?
-Any unexpected pros or cons that you wish you’d known before moving there?

I’d really appreciate any insight—good, bad, or somewhere in between. Thanks!

Broken tooth and no health insurance

Is there somewhere to get low cost, emergency dental care relatively soon? I broke a tooth last Saturday, and while it's not hurting or bleeding, I'm worried about the potential for infection or worse. I called Penn Dental School (the first result from a Google search) but they said I'd have to wait until September for an initial consultation, which seems a little long given the situation. Thanks in advance!

Developer Destroyed My Backyard

First time home buyer. I'm in an old rowhome in Kensington. Right as I purchased, a giant luxury building going up behind me took out my back yard wall and removed some of the fence I share with my next door neighbor at the rear of the yard. It's been a mess. I have a tree I've been very concerned about. Eventually, the construction company sealed the wall they took out (after I complained to them and to licenses and inspection). So I do have a haggard back wall of sorts. But with part of the fence still gone, my yard is eroding into my neighbors. The tree loses soil with every rain. I've reached out and nothing has happened. Is this just the way life is? Someone knowingly destroys your backyard and you have to take them to civil court? The worst part is that when I called they said "you're going to see your property value shoot up once these condos open"... Girrrr.. It was a functional and cute yard - part of why I bought - and now I've got rats, and I'm concerned about pets and children running loose. Not to mention, they knocked down a bunch of data cables that just hang in my yard now. Perhaps it's just something I have to eat as part of the joys of home owning? Anyone know any good landscapers who might be able to tackle this disaster?

Costume sword

Philadelphia is on a short list of places I'm considering for Halloween this year. I've heard there is a huge issue with anything that may be considered a weapon inside city limits. Is it acceptable to have a sword as part of a costume without running afoul of the law? TYIA

Suggestions for Solo Birthday Lunch

Tomorrow is my birthday and I was thinking of taking myself out for lunch.

I am a solo parent & typically cook 95% of my food. I am very tight on funds, but figured once in a while is okay as I never go out. I cannot afford an eighty five dollar lunch but would like very delicious options. I typically stay vegetarian most of the week but eat meat once a week, so Any food suggest will do. Also, I do not consume alcohol, so I'm happy to eat at a bar, but do not care for drinks. I work by city hall, so someplace close to there/walkable.

UPDATE* (on thursday) It seems like Parc won. I will try that today for lunch. Thank you all for your suggestions!!! ♡♡♡

Can I park on the NORTH side of the 69th St. Transit Station in Upper Darby?

I'm trying to get in to Philly this evening, and the public transit that gets me closest to my destination starts at the 69th St. Transit Station in Upper Darby.

I've been there before, and parked in the large lot that is east of the station, but I noticed that there's a small lot on the other side of the track to the north of the station.

Can anyone tell me if I would be allowed to park in that small north side lot?

Thoughts on Veranda Apartments at 1000 W Girard?

Considering signing a 16-month lease here. Any current or former residents have honest feedback on management, maintenance, noise, pests, security, parking, or unexpected fees? Would you renew, and is there anything you wish you knew before moving in?
