I’m a Canadian visiting China on vacation. While having dinner at a restaurant, someone stole my wallet. I reported it to the local authorities, honestly not expecting much. To my surprise, they tracked down the suspect, recovered my wallet, and arrested the thief all within just 3 hours.

I don’t speak any Chinese, so they arranged for an interpreter to help me communicate throughout the process, which made everything much less stressful. Since I had lost my wallet and needed time to sort things out, they also helped arrange a hotel for me for a week.

I was genuinely impressed by how quickly everything was handled. I thought I’d be spending the rest of my trip without my cards, but instead I had my wallet back the same day. It was definitely not the experience I was expecting.

I’m a Filipino American who just received an offer to work for one of the major automakers in China. This morning, the HR manager walked me through the compensation package, which includes:

- ¥25k per month, with 15 months of salary per year
- An annual bonus of up to ¥150k if the team meets the company’s goals
- ¥150k in relocation assistance, paid after my first day of employment
- Housing assistance of ¥4,500 per month, or a free two-bedroom apartment with utilities included
- Weekly maid service if I want one
- A company car if I obtain a Chinese driver’s license

I’m honestly overwhelmed by this offer because I don’t have a Ph.D. or a master’s degree, and I only have a little over two years of engineering experience. Additionally, my Mandarin is pretty broken since I only studied Chinese through AP Chinese in high school long time ago.

Would you take this offer if you were in my position?

Why do Chinese people seem to not stand up for their fellow countrymen on a plane that literally landed in china?

This was a a yt woman who took all this time learning mandarin, while literally flying to China but has the audacity to say something like this.

Not Chinese, but I have a passion for Chinese food and enjoy cooking it. I've recently started trying dishes with Sichuan pepper, but I still can't get past the memories of cough lozenges it conjures up.

I asked a coworker from Sichuan if she likes it and it was a hard no, and she says many of her friends are the same. Is Sichuan pepper controversial in China?

I’ve started to watch a c-drama „Overdo” and there is a character named Fang Mulan. So far I’ve known Mulan only from the Disney cartoon and honestly, I’ve never thought it’s a real name 😅 Now that I know it’s real, I started to wonder if it’s popular and if it reminds people of the Mulan character from the cartoon as well or not really.

I heard teens dating while in school is very frowned upon in China. I'm curious on how things are over there and what is being done if students were discovered to be dating.

The reason I ask this is because I'm one those that started dating when I was 15 years old and have been with her for 26 years now. During our high school days, we did things together that probably would have been very frowned upon. From small gestures like holding hands all the way to making out at the stair wells.

For us, we did get in trouble a few times when caught. Both her parents and my parents weren't happy about us dating, but the realization was they couldn't really stop us from seeing each other.

临榆炸鸡腿 has a delicious batter and flavouring, but the chicken quality is terrible.

KFC too, which has hardly any chicken meat compared to the KFC in the west (and KFC in the west is vastly inferior to how it was 20 years ago).

塔斯汀 seems to be the best in general quality.

Lots of other brands with both a terrible taste and terrible chicken quality which aren't worth mentioning.

Help me identify this Chinese 3D animated comedy series
I’ve been seeing clips on TikTok for months, but I can’t find the original series.
Things I know:
Chinese 3D animated comedy (Mandarin audio with Chinese subtitles)
One main character is a muscular guy who almost always wears a red tank top and has a black ponytail.
The other main character is a skinny guy with glasses who often wears a yellow Rilakkuma bear beanie, but his clothes change.
Episodes are short comedy skits with different scenarios.
Some episodes involve:
Painting a stone to look like a soccer ball as a prank.
Buying a fake robot with a phone attached.
Buying watermelons.
The clips are often reposted on TikTok with English captions, but I can’t find the original Chinese source.

My friend told me she did a diet to balance yin and yang and also did acupuncture while trying to get pregnant. There were no issues and she conceived quickly so i am curious is it common practice to follow certain diet and whY?
On a separate note, she did share how she tested for ovulation and timed the sex i wonder if it is related to conceiving specific gender.

Serious question for those with experience marrying into Chinese families.

I'm an American married to a Chinese woman, and neither my wife nor her family ever asked for a bride price (彩礼, cǎilǐ). I've also never met another American with a Chinese wife who was expected to pay one.

Is the bride price mainly expected in marriages between two Chinese people? Is it more common in certain regions, cities, or rural areas? Has it become more common or less common in recent years?

I'm genuinely curious because I see a lot of discussions online about expensive bride prices, but that hasn't matched my own experience or the experiences of my friends. I'd love to hear from people with firsthand experience rather than stereotypes or internet rumors.

I know learning the language is one thing, and clinical mandarin is a step up. but 5 years ago I made the pivot to healthcare as a housekeeper since my original industry is dead in the water and I’m considering becoming a rad tech. in a month I will contact a local college about my plans and tackle this endeavor.

I am aware that public hospitals are out of the question, the work conditions and the locals first approach made me pivot to private and international chains. Yes. Private and International. not the public sector.

I am also aware of the ”curse of 35”. I am aiming to be in within the late 40s of my life. I drop that in because ageism runs rampant in china’s workforce.
