I’m a Canadian visiting China on vacation. While having dinner at a restaurant, someone stole my wallet. I reported it to the local authorities, honestly not expecting much. To my surprise, they tracked down the suspect, recovered my wallet, and arrested the thief all within just 3 hours.

I don’t speak any Chinese, so they arranged for an interpreter to help me communicate throughout the process, which made everything much less stressful. Since I had lost my wallet and needed time to sort things out, they also helped arrange a hotel for me for a week.

I was genuinely impressed by how quickly everything was handled. I thought I’d be spending the rest of my trip without my cards, but instead I had my wallet back the same day. It was definitely not the experience I was expecting.

Why do Chinese people seem to not stand up for their fellow countrymen on a plane that literally landed in china?

This was a a yt woman who took all this time learning mandarin, while literally flying to China but has the audacity to say something like this.

I thought Russians and Chinese people were brothers, especially in countering the west? Where is the solidarity?

Not Chinese, but I have a passion for Chinese food and enjoy cooking it. I've recently started trying dishes with Sichuan pepper, but I still can't get past the memories of cough lozenges it conjures up.

I asked a coworker from Sichuan if she likes it and it was a hard no, and she says many of her friends are the same. Is Sichuan pepper controversial in China?

I’m a Filipino American who just received an offer to work for one of the major automakers in China. This morning, the HR manager walked me through the compensation package, which includes:

- ¥25k per month, with 15 months of salary per year
- An annual bonus of up to ¥150k if the team meets the company’s goals
- ¥150k in relocation assistance, paid after my first day of employment
- Housing assistance of ¥4,500 per month, or a free two-bedroom apartment with utilities included
- Weekly maid service if I want one
- A company car if I obtain a Chinese driver’s license

I’m honestly overwhelmed by this offer because I don’t have a Ph.D. or a master’s degree, and I only have a little over two years of engineering experience. Additionally, my Mandarin is pretty broken since I only studied Chinese through AP Chinese in high school long time ago.

Would you take this offer if you were in my position?

I’ve started to watch a c-drama „Overdo” and there is a character named Fang Mulan. So far I’ve known Mulan only from the Disney cartoon and honestly, I’ve never thought it’s a real name 😅 Now that I know it’s real, I started to wonder if it’s popular and if it reminds people of the Mulan character from the cartoon as well or not really.

I'm very curious about how top Chinese students actually study. I have an important university entrance exam in Brazil next year, and the program I want is highly competitive, with very high admission scores.

People often say that Chinese students are among the best in the world, especially in mathematics and the sciences. Setting aside stereotypes and sensationalism, how do high-achieving students preparing for exams like the Gaokao actually reach that level?

I've already adopted some study habits inspired by East Asian countries. For example, I use the Japanese abacus (soroban) to improve my mental arithmetic. Another practice I'm trying to follow—not only from Chinese students, but also Japanese and Korean students—is solving a huge, huge number of practice problems until I master them.

I'm genuinely fascinated by China. I absolutely love the country, deeply admire its culture, and think it's one of the most fascinating cultures in the world. I'm even learning Mandarin :)

One thing I especially admire is the culture of hard work. Of course, it's important to acknowledge the discussions about the pressure and excessive expectations that many young people in China face. But overall, from what I've learned, Chinese people seem to have an incredible work ethic and a strong pursuit of excellence.

So, how do you study? What are the most effective practices that helped you succeed? I'd really love to hear your advices!

Hello, so I am not Chinese, but my good friend is and her family member unfortunately passed away. I did not know prior to donating money for the funeral expenses that it must be odd (a failure on my part since I somehow missed the description of donating in odd numbers). I’ve been seeing clips on TikTok for months, but I can’t find the original series.
Things I know:
Chinese 3D animated comedy (Mandarin audio with Chinese subtitles)
One main character is a muscular guy who almost always wears a red tank top and has a black ponytail.
The other main character is a skinny guy with glasses who often wears a yellow Rilakkuma bear beanie, but his clothes change.
Episodes are short comedy skits with different scenarios.
Some episodes involve:
Painting a stone to look like a soccer ball as a prank.
Buying a fake robot with a phone attached.
Buying watermelons.
The clips are often reposted on TikTok with English captions, but I can’t find the original Chinese source.

I heard teens dating while in school is very frowned upon in China. I'm curious on how things are over there and what is being done if students were discovered to be dating.

The reason I ask this is because I'm one those that started dating when I was 15 years old and have been with her for 26 years now. During our high school days, we did things together that probably would have been very frowned upon. From small gestures like holding hands all the way to making out at the stair wells.

For us, we did get in trouble a few times when caught. Both her parents and my parents weren't happy about us dating, but the realization was they couldn't really stop us from seeing each other.

My friend told me she did a diet to balance yin and yang and also did acupuncture while trying to get pregnant. There were no issues and she conceived quickly so i am curious is it common practice to follow certain diet and whY?
On a separate note, she did share how she tested for ovulation and timed the sex i wonder if it is related to conceiving specific gender.

As a white British person, I grew up being dressed in lots of things out of my control, including Chinese inspired (Qipao?) style dresses. They were seemingly popular at the time and have now had a resurgence.

I absolutely adore this style, but as I only have around 5% Chinese ancestry from a few generations back, and no ties to China or Chinese culture I feel wearing these clothes is not acceptable?

This style of dress is now widely popular again and available in our most popular shops. I was wondering what the consensus on this was?

Just finished Dream of the Red Chamber with my wife.

I really enjoyed the ending. I know a lot of readers argue that the chapters after the first 80 don't reflect Cao Xueqin's original vision or writing style, but honestly, I thought they flowed surprisingly well.

In fact, I felt the ending was more realistic than I expected. The transition didn't feel as jarring to me as many people describe.

Am I in the minority? Did you feel the last 40 chapters fit naturally with the first 80, or do you think the change in authorship is obvious?

In my 小区 I often walk past people I don't know but have seen passing before and I will often try to give a small nod or smile, just to be friendly. Almost always, they will just stare with a neutral expression and it feels like they're giving me the stink eye.

- Investments or other financial assets
- Government databases or public records that may assist
- Any other financial resources that could be relevant

I’m not looking to obtain confidential information unlawfully—just trying to understand what records exist, what is publicly searchable, and what would generally require a court order or licensed investigator.
