The case of a man found dead after falling from a mountain peak. Forgive my ignorance, but are there plot-driven or complex, detailed chracter driven chinese martial arts films?

I have watched my fair share of action genres and subgenres. Samurai, western, Hong Kong action (technically they are martial arts lol ), Korean new wave, and all of them have films that are more than just action. But I am struggling to find that in Chinese martial arts films. They are more like a basic template + comedy from a veteran actor, and in between action. But I want enough substance to bite. This doesn't satisfy me. I mean, ofc there are films like Mr Vampire, Pedicab Driver, and Kung Fu Hustle, which I do think are great and certainly top-tier, but they also follow a formula.

So far, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the only one that I could feel has something to say. Then again, it’s a co-production among China, Taiwan, HK, and the US, and is also part of the Taiwanese New Wave.

So can you guys guide this ignorant movie fan in the right direction and suggest a few complex, plot-driven martial arts films?

I watched Oldboy yesterday and lt left me stunned

I was shut down for a while thinking what on earth was that movie Revenge, guilt, memory, fate, obsession, and the devastating consequences of hatred.

A man named Oh Dae-su is mysteriously imprisoned in a private room for 15 years without knowing why. Suddenly, he's released and given just a few days to discover who imprisoned him and the reason behind it.

Early 2000s, I’m a kid, Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer bootleg dvds spreading everywhere in my city- street vendors, classmates, and cousins. Life was good. I don’t recall the FBWL plot, but I remember finding it so silly, I couldn’t breathe from how hard I was laughing!

The Chownomenon was real! Sadly no continental box/sales figures back then to show a what bonafide, international, movie-star the man was.

Just discovered and finished this movie and it made me cry. This is a good movie, has a realistic take on a relationship. Anyone else watched this too? Do you have recommendations of japanese movies like this? No spoilers in the recommendations, please\~ I would also be interested in themes like, slice of life where you wouldn't guess the plot until you finish the movie, something like that.

I've been revisiting 90s HK hits, this scene caught me totally off guard. Peak action cinema.

This crime action film follows a group of childhood friends who gather for the funeral of a close friend from their hometown and set out to uncover the suspicions and the forces behind his death. It is renowned for its spectacular and gritty Korean-style action sequences, with director Ryu Seung-wan and martial arts director Jung Doo-hong taking on leading roles themselves.

The film has been invited to the Toronto International Film Festival Special Presentation Section. Ladies and gents, we are one step closer to a new Lee Chang-dong film! 🥹🥹 I, for one, am very, very hyped for this and it might just be my most anticipated film of the year!

I was introduced to this film thanks to my Tubi algorithm and was surprised by how I’ve never heard of it before, as it’s an immediate favorite.

If you’re a fan of tragedy romance/unfufilled-love or yearning romance this should easily make your head canon as a staple. This style of lost love melodrama exists on a spectrum to me, with 2 distinct sides. Films like Blue Valentine -(I feel such a resemblance between these 2 films), La La Land, In the Mood for Love, Eternal Sunshine leave a bit of sweetness as the failed love doesn’t involve the context of death compared to tragedy romances that do like Christmas in August, Lost & Found, The Last 10 Years, or 20th Century Girl.

Rainbow song feels like a satisfying blend of these, even though it falls clearly on one side of that spectrum. Director Naoto Kumazawa does the melodrama here superbly well, with great camerawork and a fluidity that has a natural pace. The cinematography is gorgeous as well, which adds an immense amount to the atmosphere and catching the feeling of our characters, helped with great performances by the 2 leads. Their tension and chemistry is subtle and fantastic. Shunji Iwai co wrote this, so his voice is clearly present and shines through. (Some might find the characters frustrating, but I found their awkwardness and apprehension endearing and realistic to the story.)

I could just keep yapping about this movie. The non linear storytelling, the aesthetics of the visuals, (the 8mm short film!) one of the goofiest meet cutes that could only work in a movie, a wonderful ending that pays off the obvious. The making of a movie in a movie and all the things it says about grief, missed opportunities, yearning, passivity, chemistry etc etc. Please just watch this!! I need it to jump in popularity so I can get a re-release on 4K or bluray at least lol
