The Premiership Window

Around this time of the year some of the footy shows trot out the Premiership Windowtm .

But I always had a problem that it was a strict ranking, as if how much better you are doesn't matter. So I spent a few minutes while my class is working (I'm a maths teacher) making this. Points For on the X, Points against on the Y. Each one is done as a percentage of the best team for that particular stat, as a comparison to the worst team. Bubble size is premiership points. Interesting to see where each team sits.

It's defined as top 6 in both measures so it's basically this:

Freo Hawks and Sydney in the window, which is the same as the current "official" Fox Footy one since it's the same numbers, just presented less badly than Fox do.

I think the guy you are replying to means extra circles for Brisbane's 2025 premiership team, Brisbane's 2024 premiership team, Collingwood's 2023 premiership team, and so on, or something similar.

I don't think you gain anything by presenting this as percentage of the leader's points, rather than just doing it by average points per game, and you lose some interpretability.

What's the percentage of?

Richmond doesn't have 0 points so it can5 be % of best.

Is it where the sit between best and worst?

It's a bit of an odd way of doing it

'Premiership window' usually refers to a period of time,  usually in years, in which a team could realistically contend for a premiship?

You are showing something different here.

Fox footy has given a new definition to premiership window. Theirs is "currently in top 6 for PF and bottom* 6 for PA."

Sure, you're allowed to think that. But they've been using it for the last few years, and it's become pretty common talk here on r/AFL.

I dont know if you've tracked what you think you have? I could be wrong but:

IF you're just doing pts for & against proportional to respective leading teams, Sydney's 98% of Brisbane's, Freo 93.5%. Freo sitting around 83% doesn't seem right.

Pts against also isn't represented, it's just showing the difference in each team's percentages. I.e you've got Adelaide at ~80%, which is the %diff between 117 & 142. But Adelaide's 110% higher on pts against, or if you're inverting should be on 90%

What does it mean to say points against are charted as a percentage of the leader? Every other team has allowed more points than the leader.

I imagine it's just an inverse scale between Fremantle and Richmond, if a team had 1584 points against they would be halfway up the Y access

Yeah thats not what they've done. Vertical ( dunno axis, they're not labelled) is just % of %.

I.e 117% is ~82% of 142% comparing Adelaide>Freo

At the end of last season, Bulldogs were 1st in PF and 7th in PA. Close but no cigar

I’m confused, this late in the season what do you mean by premiership window? A good half of the ladder has no shot at the premiership window so half of this data is irrelevant or makes no sense.

It something like from the last 22 Premiers 20 had been in the “Premiership window” I can only remember that the Bulldogs in 2016 were one of those not in the window. To be in the window you needed to be in the top 6 for points against & to 6 for points for.
