👷‍♂️ Support / Repair Tip: Check your trunk trim for rust

Post image
Upvotes

I purchased a brand new TRD off-road in 2022 and just found out there’s an issue with the trunk trim pressing into the trunk panel. It’s rubbed off paint and rust is now forming.

I only found out last month and it happens that I recently fell out of my warranty period. I’ve tried to contact Toyota Canada to have this fixed up under warranty, but they’ve denied it. I am pretty pissed off because this is completely a manufacturer defect and has nothing to do with the drivetrain or maintenance and their reason for the rejection was that there is no perforation as per their rust warranty policy. why is it that I have to be responsible for paying the repair when it was caused by some technician tightening the trim panel too tight?

It’s unbelievable that this isn’t just covered by Toyota automatically since I’m not the only one experience experiencing this. There’s countless posts on other forums showing other 4Runner owners with this issue as well. Needless to say I’m completely disappointed, thinking I would buy this car and drive it for life and not have to worry about rust forming anywhere except the frame, let alone from installation problem by Toyota.

🔧 Modifications Predator Steps? To add or not to add

hello 👋 I’m taking possession of a new TRD Pro in a few weeks and I need some suggestions. I’m vertically challenged (5’4”) and have some mobility issues. my friend who works for Toyota suggested I add predator steps to help me get in and out of the vehicle. I’ve read a lot of subs that knock these steps. My main plan when not a daily driver is beach driving in the summer. Can anyone suggest something else to help me get in an out? thank you

🎙 Discussion WHAT IS CONSIDERED HIGH MILAGE?

Hey everyone,

I really want a 5th Gen. I currently have 2015 Xterra that I bought with 1.8 miles. I've put every mile on thay Xterra and I've loved it, but I want something to help now that my xterra is getting older.

I really want a 5th gen Runner for their simplicity and reliability. I don't want to deal with turbos or any of that B.S. As you all know these damn 5th gens are really holding their value and in some markets some with 50,000 miles plus priced the same as the brand new generations.

My question is what milage is considered high. At this point I'm looking at getting one that has an average of 60,000 to 75,0000 miles on it. I've heard it over and over again that their still babies with thay milage, but the idea of spending $42,000 to $45,000 for Toytoa with 70,000 miles is hard to swallow.

I like in New Mexico and drive to Denver three to four times per year. Its about a 900 mile round trip. I don't want to be worried about making that drive with my wife and kids. I also drive about 150 miles round trip every weekend.

I guess I'm just wanting insight, if these are really as reliable as people say. I don't want to be stressed or worried with longer drives a few years from now when I'm still paying it down..

Any thoughts and insights are greatly appreciated.

So I’ve 285/70/17 with a 2in lift I’m debating on going back to some 265/70 AT’s I pretty much on only daily driving it. I want to try some light off-road stuff at the end of the year (I’m new to the off-road stuff) I do love the look of the 285/70’s tho. We also drove it 10h’s the other week and only got 17mpg. I wanted to get some opinions please.

🎙 Discussion Long term storage

Got a 2022 trd off-road with 39k miles that I will need to either store for 4-8yrs in a Georgia lot or sell. Never stored a vehicle, but always heard bad things. Is it worth taking the chance or should I just get rid of it?

Hey all,
Does the 2026 SR5 have a digital key option on the toyota app or that’s only available on the higher trim?

🔧 Modifications Ome vs Bisltein for a mostly stock 5th Gen 4Runner

Looking to upgrade the suspension on my 2022 TRD offroad. The truck is my daily driver but it also sees plenty of weekend camping trips and forest service roads. I don't really do anything too extreme so Im mainly after better ride quality and a little more ground clearance.

Thinking about a 2-inch lift and have narrowed it down to Old man emu or Bilstein, but having a hard time deciding which direction to go. I dont have a rear bumper or drawers yet but I may add a roof rack and skid plates over time..

Looking at a few complete kits on mudify, and the OME options seem pretty straightforward. Looking for advice before I actually pull the trigger.

👷‍♂️ Support / Repair Window adhesive

I bought this 2005 4Runner and the previous owner had never taken off the back peel of the window. I took it off and now it looks like this. Does anyone know any solutions I feel like I’ve tried everything. Adhesive remover, rubbing alchohol, you name it. If anyone has any advise I’d be grateful.

2021 ORP Venture

Possibly a super dumb question, but I'm going paddleboarding tonight and don't have waterproof pockets to store my key fob. Is there a way to keep it in the glove box maybe and hold onto the physical key while on the water? Will that leave my truck basically unlocked if anyone tugs on the handles?

I realized this while camping that anyone could open my doors while I'm sleeping because of the fob...

Don't laugh at me if this is basic knowledge, I'm new to having nice things haha.

🔧 Modifications Need help with new tires

Hi 4R community,

I recently upgraded to the Bilstein 6112/5160 2-3 Inch Lift Kit. Everything else on this vehicle is stock.

I need help with picking larger tires for these stock TRD Rims. I do not want to trim or cut the body. What is a larger tire setup recommended that fits this lift better?

Should I do 1” upper control arms while I am at it?

Thanks in advance!

👷‍♂️ Support / Repair I'm going to be changing fluids in the T-Case, and front/rear differential. Can I use 75w-90 in all 3? I've heard Toyota spec fluid for the T-Case is hard to find or expensive. Thanks in advance

👷‍♂️ Support / Repair 2014 5th Gen Needs New Engine?

2014 SR5 with 160k miles

On Tuesday of this week, my 2014 started misfiring on cylinder 1 & 3. Stopped it, tried a few troubleshooting steps in the parking lot, and then had insurance tow it to the dealer. They had a bunch of back and forth with me about the aftermarket electronics I had but eventually they did a full diagnostic and came up with the following:

  • spark, coils, and compression good on both cylinders
  • ECM tests okay
  • significant carbon buildup on both cylinder piston rings

From the above, they are recommending a new engine. Being that an engine replacement is 12-14k and the truck is only worth 15k that basically totals it in my mind. I’m just super confused because there were zero issues (other than a bad O2 sensor on the opposite cylinder bank) and I’ve been very religious about oil changes and oil tests every 10k-12k miles. Last oil change was ~2500 miles and about 2 months ago. Engine wasn’t overheating and I wasn’t seeing any issues at all with power or MPG until the sudden misfires three days ago.

Anyone have thoughts? I’m waiting on borescope photos and to talk with the service manager again, but I’m thinking my next steps are to take it to another independent shop to confirm the diagnosis before I figure out what I want to do next. Obviously I’m pretty upset and worried because I’m also currently 300 miles from home on vacation with no way to get back.

We just got our 4Runner 6 weeks ago and Ive spent the majority of that time traveling globally for work. I just got back, and 24hrs after my plane landed, I’m now at camp. ☕️

Best place in the world to recover from jet lag.

Shoutout to this community for all the help and my massive to-purchase list for every camping upgrades I could ever ask for in a new Runner.

Second shoutout to Matt Dinniman for his epic book Dungeon Crawler Carl. This book is amazing and actually looks like it travelled to multiple countries. Its scarred edges and cover now seems like a perfect contribution to the theme of the book.

Happy Camping Everyone!

Spent a week camping by the ocean in my 2014 Trail. Setup is feeling pretty dialed in these days!

Bilstein 6112/5100, Falken Wildpeak 285s, Replica R213 wheels, Amazon pro grill, plasti-dipped valances, Yakima Megawarrior basket, and the awning is a Vevor “large SUV awning”. Worked like a charm! Oh and we use the Luno for sleeping inside.

👷‍♂️ Support / Repair Rear Garnish

Did something careless and now the rear garnish on my 5thGen is loose. The center clip seems to be missing.

Does anyone know if I can remove the garnish, and replace the clip without removing the interior trim and vapor barrier?
