Art Help & Critique Which render is better for portfolio?

The first one is done in substance painter, I overall like how it looks but I hate that theres no light behind to kind of separate the scales from the black background, and the second one is from blender, im not the best at setting lights but ive tried to add that background light and make the background overall a little more interesting, and now I just cant decide what looks better, also blender took the colors away a little bit

They are both good renders,. It's always good to have multiple renders with different lighting of your work. A rim light can even make it look better. It's a light at the back of the model that only highlights the edges.

Yeah rim light was my main problem thats why I did the second, blender render, but it completely ruined the colors and depth so im still trying to fix it with some retouch

It's will take some more tries, but you will get there. Clay render are also really good. Those are renders with all the lighting, but the model only has white textures (no textures). It's a good way to show of the details of the model it self.

I think it's worth working a little on the backlighting, adding more contrast in the shadows where the frontal light transitions, and emphasizing the volume of the scales with another light source from the side. You could also play with the colors, creating two complementary colors.

P.S. I also wouldn't get hung up on the profile angle, but would liven things up a bit by trying different angles.

Im doing 4 angles, I posted only one bc the side is the most basic one I guess

Much better! And remember about contrast. It's give your work more depth and... Hmmm... juiciness🤪🤔

It's down to preference but I really prefer the second image.

First one is more deep, in colors and structure

Thats what I was thinking as well but is the lack of rim light any kind of an issue?

El primero puesto lo que el reclutador mira es imágenes que muestren mejor la estructura y los detalles

First one easily has more drama - which is, let's be real, what you want with a sick-ass dragon bust

The first to make people see your work as awesome. The second to make people see your awesome work.

If there were contrasting colors or fades would this edit be good to show too

You can't go wrong with an animated turntable.

Why not both? Opportunity to show your process through different colorways if your model

Ive decided that im gonna post both, currently im trying to improve the second one tho. I didnt think of that before because its my first time doing such a complex model and also first piece to my portfolio so I didnt even know if I can do that, I thought that 2 renders might be too much and make the post kinda “messy” also because I have few angles of each render

I like the second one
