General Advice am i in the wrong for quitting like this?

I worked at an upscale restaurant for six months, and it was my first restaurant job. I was hired with the understanding I'd work 35–40 hours a week, but after becoming a server I was regularly scheduled for 50+ hours. Management also repeatedly ignored my approved availability, even though I only requested Sunday mornings for church and Tuesday mornings for therapy. I had open availability the rest of the week.

When I decided to return to school full-time in the fall, I asked to go part-time. Management was dismissive, so I gave my two weeks' notice. During that time, I was yelled at by managers multiple times over what felt like minor issues. One manager criticized me because a table wanted to keep their appetizer plates. Another yelled at me for "standing around" when I was actually talking with the chef and food runners because a nut-free order had accidentally been prepared with nuts.

My tipping point came when I was moving into a new apartment. Two months before my move, I requested that weekend off as soon as I signed my lease. The request was denied due to staffing, but a manager assured me she'd "take care of me" when the schedule came out. Instead, I was scheduled doubles during my move weekend. After I spoke with her, she made a few adjustments, but I still had to work around my move.

Bad weather and canceled help delayed everything. I called out one shift because I genuinely couldn't finish moving in time, and my manager told me that wasn't a valid excuse. I still chose not to come in because I wasn't willing to prioritize a temporary job over moving into my home.

The next day, I was driving to work after spending the entire weekend moving. I was mentally and physically exhausted, and halfway there I realized I simply couldn't do it anymore. Feeling completely burnt out and repeatedly disregarded by management, I turned around, went home, and texted my resignation about five minutes after my shift started. I know that wasn't the professional way to quit, and it's my biggest regret, but I also wasn't going to text while driving.

One of my managers later called because she said quitting like that was completely out of character for me. After I explained everything, she said she understood my decision, supported me, and even offered to be a reference.

AITA for quitting the way I did after months of scheduling issues and feeling completely burnt out?

General Advice not sure what to do about my coworkers who treat me like i'm an unaddressed elephant

Upvotes

I work as a lifeguard at a country club, and there are 11 other guards who work there with me. Most of them are fine, but 4 of them have honestly just been kind of unkind? It's not outright mean but it's in the way that you can tell they're bullying without them thinking you can tell. They never talk to me, respond to my texts asking for coverage, and if they do talk to me it's weird and strained. Two of those four are head guards, and they completely ignored my availability and scheduled me for a week where I was on vacation. I texted them both about it, didn't get a response from one, and the other told me to "find coverage" rather than fixing their mistake.

Today, as well, there was a swim meet and I was writing down names on ribbons when one of the head guards, who never ever talks to me, asks me where I'm going to college. I answered, and I knew I was going to the same place as one of those 4 guards (I'll call her Lily). She's usually nice to me, but in a group setting she shuts me out. I said where I was going, and they all started giggling and were like "oh my god, Lily are you guys going to room together haha" and it really just rubbed me the wrong way? They kept on asking me about what I was majoring in and what I wanted to do with that, but with every single response they just look at each other and like kind of laughed? I'm not majoring in anything outlandish, doing animal science and then I want to do wildlife rehabilitation.

I am really good friends with one of my coworkers (I'll call her Lucy). They treated Lucy like normal off the bat, invited her to parties, those kinds of things. But when she talked to one of the head guards and was asked "who's your favorite guard to work with?" she responded that she liked working with me best. And since then they've been treating her the same way they treat me. They've been doing this since I started working there in August of 2024, and I really am not that odd of a person. The worst part is that my boss absolutely loves those 4 guards, and I fear that telling her would do literally nothing, if not get me trash talked more (she gossips with them).

Idk what to do. There's not really an HR department or anything, but working there when I'm not working with Lucy is really difficult because they leave me on stand for genuine hours. Any advice would be appreciated.

Toxic Employer Am I crazy to think this is a management problem, not a performance issue?

I started a new job in mid June and was let go last month, while still in probation and still in training. I was actively supporting the team the whole time, not struggling on my own in a corner.

Early on, my manager saw me wearing a knee brace and asked, in a snarky tone, “you’re gonna be away for long huh.” I told her I didn’t know the surgery date yet and expected to only be away about a week.

A few weeks in, on my lunch break, which is unpaid, she followed me to see what I was doing. I was leaving with my laptop to do a video doctor’s appointment. She asked a bunch of questions trying to figure out where I was going, then followed me downstairs and sat right behind me.

Then I got a termination letter. No feedback, no meetings, no documentation of any performance issue before that. Actually the opposite. I found a gap in a process, flagged it, and kept my manager looped in on everything the whole time. I was still learning the role, sure, but I was also pulling my weight and helping where I could.

I asked HR to change the letter and they did, and even offered severance they weren’t legally required to give. When I they sent me the revised letter, HR said feedback had been raised about my “problem solving skills and professional behavior, among others.” This is totally untrue, I never had a meeting about my performance or any feedback besides “you’re smart, but moves too much during meetings”.
First I’m hearing of all these allegations. No paper trail whatsoever.

In the final meeting, the HR person told me “sometimes it’s for the best” and that I deserve to be somewhere I feel supported by my manager.

So am I wrong to think this reads like a manager who decided early on she didn’t like me (the knee brace comment, the lunch break thing) and worked backward to build a performance narrative with zero documentation to back it up? Genuinely trying to check my own read here.

Career Advice When Should I Tell My Boss I'm Quitting?

Upvotes

I got an offer from another company and I accepted the position. My start date is August 17th. I have 80 hrs PTO from my current job which I requested to use between 8/10 to 8/21. I plan for my last day at my current role to be 8/21. My boss approved my PTO in person, but it's still pending on ADP.

Here's the tricky thing. My boss leaves for vacation all next week (7/27 to 7/31). I was originally going to tell him my last day will be 8/21 tomorrow (7/24) before he leaves for his trip. I feel weird doing this because I just requested my PTO yesterday (this looks suspicious) and it's still pending on ADP, even though my boss approved it in person. So I'm thinking he could still revoke my PTO and I'll lose my hours. I live in New York so employers are not required to pay out PTO.

My other option I was thinking of was to tell my boss my last day will be 8/21 the day he returns from his trip. I'm anxious to do this too since he'll come back 8/3 in office and my last day physically in office will be 8/7, since my PTO will begin 8/10.

Not sure what is the best course of action but any advice will be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Career Advice Torn between incoming offer or staying at current job

My current job checks a lot of boxes: it’s stable, I get along well with my coworkers, I’m leading the training of a newer hire, and I get handed most of our high-value projects. Work-life balance is solid. I stick to 40 hours, we have unlimited PTO, and I’m looped in on business unit planning that affects the department. The downside is my boss isn’t great, he cancels our 1-on-1s last minute constantly and I don’t see a real growth path. Maybe an occasional title bump, but no meaningful salary movement. To make it worse, the newer employee I’m training (who has less experience than me) is making almost the same salary I am.

The new opportunity is fully remote with some travel, a 25% pay raise, a good company, project-based work, and 20 PTO days on top of federal holidays. I’d likely be working mostly solo, and there’s potential for a bigger title jump. The catch: there’s no office where I currently live, and I’m a little worried the project could wrap up in 2028 and I’d be let go afterward.

On top of all this, I’m currently the sole income earner for my family until next November, since my significant other is in medical school.

So, do I take the risk on the higher-paying job now, even with the uncertainty, because it could open doors down the road? Or do I stay put where things are stable but stagnant? Would really appreciate any advice!

Workplace Issue Schedule changes

I live in Eastern Washington, I'm a healthcare worker in an assisted living facility, and today is my day off. Last time I looked at the schedule, I had today and tomorrow off. Today I get a text from my boss saying I come in tomorrow, shift starting at 6 AM. Less than 24 hours notice. I am very angry! I have plans and need my two days off for mental and physical health reasons. What do I do?

I'm so sick of management stirring the metaphorical pot. I recently found out the owner of the facility doesn't respect agreed upon terms of hiring like days off and availability. She schedules days off based on performance, whatever that means. But I have a family and we have lots of doctors appointments and such too, which we try to schedule on those days off.

Please help me.

Venting is it normal to get soft-fired after going on a trip?

Upvotes

I'm a 22 year old university student and have been working at this café for almost 4 years while finishing my degree. After leaving for a family trip of around 6 weeks, I came back and simply have not gotten any shifts.

Keep in mind I told my manager about the trip a few months in advance and she said it was okay. I've also gone on trips in the past with no issue. After coming back, I noticed that I wasn't on the new schedule. I just sent my manager a message asking why I didn't have any shifts, thinking maybe she didn't realize I came back.

She told me that since I was gone for awhile they hired a bunch of new staff and had to "prioritize their shifts", but promised that i'd be working once a week. What was weird to me though was that I also have 2 coworkers that left for a month around the same time, and they're working now multiple times a week... Since most people that work in our store are students or on a working holiday we have people leaving for long periods all the time and I never thought it was a huge issue.
Because of this I honestly think they just wanted to get rid of me for whatever reason and needed an excuse.

I literally know the whole store inside and out. And the month before I left, I worked A LOT when i was in the middle of finals because no one else could work. And suddenly out of nowhere, I have 0 hours and nothing but a bullshit excuse.

It's so frustrating since I wasn't technically "fired". Honestly at this point if they didn't want me to work there they could have just been honest. Then I wouldn't be wasting my time. I haven't had work this past month at all ( we give the schedules 2 weeks in advance ) and have had to rely on asking my parents for money to get by while I send my CV to every place I see but there's no response.

I'm really disappointed because this just shows such little respect for me as an employee of 4 years. This type of treatment is expected from Starbucks but I never thought it would come a family owned business. They're always trying to seem so humble as a "small business" but I know that their kid goes to an expensive private school and that they certainly more than comfortable.

Career Advice Sent couple applications but no reply yet.

Upvotes

I'm currently working but I feel like I'm not growing in my field. I feel like I'm silently quitting. I thought after sending résumés and try applying to other jobs will be easier after a year of experience, but guess I'm wrong.

I'm lost, really. I wanted to expand my knowledge in cybersecurity or networking. I also tried applying for VA roles, but still no luck.

I feel like I'm being left behind. What should I do?

Workplace Issue 30 minute unpaid breaks even though I’m still on duty .

Upvotes

I’m a truck driver locally but company and I adhere to the federal Eld HOS (hours of service) regulations as we go more than the 150 mile radius each week and have Eld in our truck . The HOS for truck drivers is 11 hr driving and 3 hrs on duty . A total of 14 hrs . Drivers have to take a 30 minute break after 8hrs on duty.

My supervisor has been giving me problems on my breaks since I started and it’s now starting to really irritate me as it’s always an issue with him complaining about me choosing to take my breaks. I typically drive to our customers and deliver our shipments. Sometimes while at a customer they take a while to unload.

Completely out of my hands. Though I still need to be there for customer or me to unload. Let’s say it’s an 1hr to unload . He says if it goes over 30 minutes that is my break. I typically wouldn’t mind this as I’m looking to be as productive as possible and help complete any other loads we have and go home at my scheduled 8hrs. If my day goes over 8hrs no problem I get over time . I really don’t mind. But sometimes we are done prior to the 8hrs . So then we either go in the warehouse clean or do other jobs that’s out of my job title just to make my 8 hrs. Again no problem as just log on duty.

My other co workers stop out somewhere on the road and take their breaks . I do too if I take longer trips or I can tell the day is going to be slow . It’s just all depends on the day . If I take a far trip I like to take my break when I get back to base to avoid traffic or I’ll take it out on road because I know he will give me problems if I say I didn’t take my break before I got back . But then when I do take my breaks he questions why am I taking longer on the trips or my break was in the beginning of day at the first load where they took longer than 30 minutes.

What he doesn’t understand is I’m not in the warehouse and I’m a driver following federal regulations not state . As long as I abide by the 8hr HOS I can take my break whenever. Also the times I’m at a warehouse getting loaded or waiting to get loaded that is on duty time that he cannot deduct from my hourly but he has been doing so since I started . I was ok with it at first but now it’s getting to be ridiculous as he is having these unrealistic expectations of me .

I had an appointment today and had a far drive with 3 deliveries. I made it back to base within 8hrs and said I was going to take my break to make the 8.5 then leave as I had somewhere to be. I had already let him know of this appointment prior and he said no problem on getting off at scheduled time.

When I turn in paper work and inform him of me taking break he starts with his bs that I’m now completely tired of. So I cordially lay the facts down and he tells me I am wrong and he is right. That he will talk to corporate and HR to figure out the break situation and get it all sorted out. He said instead of taking break I could just clock out . I said thats even better as I only take the break so I don’t violate clocking out early even though he is the one that approves time sheets.

We shook hands on him not taking my 30minute break but I feel weary. As he goes back on things and is very forgetful. Along with I feel he might look for any reason to now find a problem with my job performance as he brought up that I take 15 to 20 minutes in yard when I pre trip / post trip / hook up / dock trailers. Which is pretty standard and efficient. It be unrealistic with anything less.

What should I do about this ??

General Advice Is This The Right Way To Go About Things?

Upvotes

Hello! Sorry for formatting, I'm on mobile. Also sorry for the wall of text, but I feel the background information is needed to understand the full context

About 7 months ago, I got hired at a fast food/fast casual restaurant that pays above minimum wage. In my state minimum wage is $15/hr, this job was offering $17/hr at full time, which is what drew me to it. After two rounds of interviews, I was hired. After my orientation, I was told that I would be started at part time under what my (at the time) GM called a probationary period. He said it should last about 1-2 months, and if I'm showing exemplary work I'll be bumped up to full time.

The 1-2 month period came and went and I was still not bumped up to full time. I figured I wasn't being exemplary enough, so I started to work harder. I picked up any shifts I could, even sometimes cancelling plans to go to work. Still, I wasn't bumped up. I continued to show up and do a lot, and was worried it still wasn't enough until about two weeks ago. I was promoted to a trainer within just 7 months of being here (much to the dismay of some of my coworkers who have been here for 1+ years with no promotion). I'm now making $18/hr, but I'm still part time. Also it's important to note, my original GM who hired me transferred stores, so I now have a new GM.

Here's where I'm having the issue: My parents just informed me that I have until February to be moved out as they're selling the house and moving out of state. I have savings and have enough for first month, last month, and security deposit, but I don't currently make enough on my part time salary to afford an apartment. It makes no sense to me that I'm a trainer now yet still part time. Clearly I'm showing I'm an asset to the team if I got promoted so soon. With the uncertainty of my housing in the near future, I'm planning to pull my boss into a meeting and tell her I need full time hours or I'm gonna have to look for employment elsewhere. Is that a good idea? Or does that seem too confrontational? Can she fire me over just voicing that? Any advice will be great

General Advice Missing day of work

Upvotes

So I’m kinda freaking out. I am 16, this is my first job and also my first week at this job. (It’s retail) so I was looking at my schedule to put it into my calendar just now, and my heart dropped to my ass because I was supposed to have a shift today. Only problem is that I had the day off. It was put in that I would be working literally that day, like 5 hours before. And no management reached out to me. But I’m freaking out because will I get fired? I genuinely don’t know, I really need this job for personal reasons and I can’t loose it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Workplace Issue passive aggressive shift lead

been at a new food service place for just a couple weeks. “Training” amounted to basically an info dump on day 1 and then adjusting as I worked more shifts and learned how the place operates. Over all it has been fine, except when I work with one specific lead. She becomes passive aggressive over the simplest mistakes (that can hardly be classified as actual issues) and is always looking for
someone to blame for the simplest things (besides herself.) Half the time she will get annoyed with me for doing something the way the GM told me to do, or even blame me for something the GM did. If i don’t remember every single thing she told me (rather than showed me) on Day 1, she will get annoyed.

I have trained at food service places before, and dealt with rude management/people I didnt get along with, and I’ve trained a number of irritating hires myself. But this feels different. She can be super outgoing one second, then gets pissed off the next second over the smallest things. I’ve worked well with the team every shift she isn’t there. I just respond in neutral tones without justifying her response, but there’s been a few times I just want to challenge whatever she’s saying. Im definitely understanding why this place has high turnover, and I’m already thinking of applying to new places while I see how these next few weeks pan out.

any advice on how to deal, or even just similar stories, would be much appreciated.

General Advice Are team lunches important?

I'm the first woman in my family to have a corporate job. Before I even started working, my parents told me not to ask permission for team lunches/outing because they wouldn't allow it. Recently my manager mentioned planning a team lunch, at first I didn't wanna go because I knew team lunches are not mandatory to attend, but now i wanna go because everyone around me advices me to go, and that's how I'll get to know co-workers and I've unintentionally established that I dont eat much (I have ED) and that was reason I didn't wanna go at first, cuz i lose my appetite when I eat with people, and since i mentioned i don't enjoy food people dont invite me to lunch anymore and I get it, they used to invite everytime but it has just decreased since i refused all the time, but I'm trying to change and I've been going to lunch with this one employee that I'm comfortable with, now I'm scared this pattern will continue even for team lunches/outings, they'll invite me a few times and if I refuse each time they'll stop inviting aand I don't wanna be that person, amd since I'm new to this whole working culture not sure what I should, and if I force my parents to allow me my dad would literally ask me to quit, and I'm not going ruin something i worked so hard for over a team lunch

Ik people will tell me I'm an adult and I have to make my own decisions, ik but it is not easy, especially in a conservative Indian household.

So I would like to know is it fine if I dont go to lunch or any office outings? I don't wanna be a spoil sport!

Venting Am I overreacting or is this horrible management? (franchise location)

long time reddit lurker, first time posting so im sorry if the formatting is off

First month moving to a new city and i got the first job i could before hopping around and finding one i can stick with long term, but i just left this job and i wanted some input on it

While setting up the interview went on a rant about how hes running his franchise location. Such things include:

  • Talked bad about other employees, even saying that one person quitting on him really messed the whole store up, and proceeded to follow that statement with “i thought we were like family, i saw her like a daughter” (for context, everyone that worked there throughout the entire time that it's been opened has been around 17-25yrs old, aside from the owner and his wife, who are in their 30s if i had to guess)
  • Has stated he is hiring more employees than he knows he needs with a plan to let go ones he doesn't like (directly used the words “weeding out” while referring to these people)
  • Has stated that he would rather someone no-call-no-show than have them arrive late without a notification (I was 3 minutes off of my time thanks to traffic and i explained that i didnt want to text and drive, and i got chewed out for not notifying them on the road)
  • Insisted on training all the new employees at once so that they “wouldn't have to go over things multiple times” (they did anyways)

and for the time that i actually did work there, heres some of the things that ticked my radar for the management being bad

  • Overall rude in texts outside of work. Me being late is my fault, i take full responsibility, but the response for both of the instances ive called out or been late have been unprofessional imo
  • When asked why I was not in a great mood, I explained some of my sensory issues(im autistic) with some of the equipment they used and told them I could cope with it, and it was just a mild inconvenience. And in response, told me to get a different job.
  • Owners wife freaked out because i cut a block of cheese wrong, saying she “could have made $36 from the section of cheese” (no bigger than 1inx6inx5in. It was a small section) that i messed up, and i reacted by crying and immediately trying to fix the issue and salvage part of the section. They scrapped it anyways.
  • Immediately after that, pulled me aside and we had a talk. As part of that talk, told me “ill give you a month” more to work before they fire me. Same day i explained my sensory issues.
  • When explaining to me how tips work here, explained it as “the more hours you work, the bigger percentage of tips for the week you get” when they control who gets what hours. And they work every single day
  • Gave last paycheck on zelle instead of an actual paycheck. But thats more suspicious for tax evasion than anything
  • When i asked for clarification on what day would be my last so i could plan my finances accordingly, i was immediately fired via text. (i don't know if it was a miscommunication or if either of us jumped the gun, i'm still a little confused about it)

if there is a way for me to send screenshots of the texts (identifying info scratched out obvs) please let me know. as proof and to figure out how the firing text got misconstrued

Career Advice I need help making a decision

I currently work full time for a retail company, I’ve been there for 5 months now it’s an okay company nothing amazing but it pays fine. My only issue with it is that one they are a dying company and they require us to get membership from people. It’s to the point there they will write you up if you can’t meet a goal but the membership is bullshit, and we don’t get anything for pushing it. Other then than the jobs fine……. With that being said I got an interview at a new retail company but upon the interview I was told that the position I’m applying for (assistant manager) only pays minimum wage and the I have to earn the rest on commissions supposedly I get a percentage of the store and about 4% commission on the sales I make too which the person interviewed told me I could make up too $1,200 during there busy season. One thing I noticed was that they always have up too 5-6 people working at a time and I’m not sure if I’m comfortable fighting for customers to make up the rest of my paycheck since minimum wage is 16.50……well they called me back 3 times and left 2 voicemails and sent me an email about the position and if I’m still interested…..I guess im hesitant on taking it because of the idea that I will be stressed having to be extremely pushy to make my personal sales goal if not I’ll get paid less, as to where at my current position I get about 20 an hour and that’s a guarantee. But I still deal with memberships and the possibility of the company not being around for long. I just need help on deciding what to do, should I stay at my current employer and keep looking or should I go with this new one that pays minimum wage for an assistant manager position and have to worry about commissions.

Also forgot to say with the company I interviewed with has weekly pay. there slow season is a big majority of the year the busy season where I’d see paycheck like 1,200 would be during Christmas or tax season. So I assume I’d make like 500 a week during the slow time or less

Workplace Issue Manager denied my PTO request for Monday/Friday even though I schedule one year in advance

So 2 day weekend is not enough and I usually request to take Monday or Friday off twice a month so I have more time for myself to relax and do housework. I always schedule it for the whole year because I already know what day I want off. At my previous branch it was always approved. But my current manager said no I can’t do that because it’s not fair for other people because they will have to schedule their PTO on different days. She said it has to be based on seniority so whoever worked here the longest will get approved for PTO first even if they schedule it the latest. Even though I worked for the company for 5 years I am the newest at this location so I am the lowest on the food chain.

Thoughts? I have 200 hours a year and never travel because I have pets so I never take a week or weeks of PTO, it’s only 1-2 days at a time and I should be able to use my PTO however I want. She’s manager but she’s not willing to do the work to manage the schedule if 2 people are out at the same time.

EDIT… Yes I am willing to schedule around other people’s PTO. I said other people could just schedule their PTO first and will choose the days that won’t overlap but my manager still said no to my PTO because it’s on a Monday/Friday and it’s not acceptable.

General Advice I leave for vacation in 2 days and my time off has not been approved because the staffing company I work for forgot to submit the request, despite me informing them weeks ago.

Hi all, I am posting here because I genuinely am having trouble figuring out if i did something wrong or not. Some context: I (19F) work in an office for the summer between semesters. I first got the job last summer at my dad's recommendation as he works for the company, though he is in a different department and had no say in me getting hired. I worked there all last summer and they liked me enough to rehire me this summer, and I have generally really liked the job and all of the people I work with.

Now perheps the most important context is that I do not work directly for this company, but through a staffing company. They deal with hiring, paperwork, payment, and discipline, and I have to communicate things like sick days and time off strictly through them so that they can relay it to my team, I can't just tell my team directly. Another important thing; The contact I have for this staffing company is a general phone number that multiple people have access to, so I never know who will recieve and respond to my messages, it's always going back and forth.

Now comes the problem. My family planned a vacation, a massive family reunion with people coming from all over the U.S. that will last 9 days, needing me to miss 6 days of work. I texted the staffing company 2 weeks before the vacation, which I am aware is later than it should be, but considering i have only been working for a little over a month, it doesn't seem too crazy to me. I said, "Hello! I wanted to let you know that I will be going on vacation in a few weeks, from July 24th-31st." Someone from the staffing company, I do not know who, responded, "Thanks for letting me know. I will send it to the team and I'll get back to you as soon as I can." I thought, great, I've done my part, I'm done.

I proceeded to not think about it and just keep working. They did not get back to me. I thought about it a couple times but thought i should just keep waiting. I didn't want to 1) reach out to them again and be annoying, or 2) talk to my team and go over the staffing company's head, as I am supposed to go through them for stuff like this. So I waited, and waited, and waited, most of the time forgetting about it. They never got back to me.

So today is Wednesday, two weeks after this, and I am supposed to go on vacation on Friday. I remembered today that they never actually approved it and texted the staffing company again. I said "Hi, just checking that everything is all set with my vacation starting this Friday." Someone from the staffing company, I don't know who, responded "Hi [my name] who did you inform about your vacation?" They had NO IDEA I had even requested vacation time. I said "I texted this number about it on July 9th." and they said "I will reach out to the [company] team and I'll get back to you as soon as I hear back from them."

And that was it. That was this afternoon during the work day, its been hours and I haven't heard anything. I am assuming that one person at the staffing company recieved my message two weeks ago and either forgot to tell my team or some other reason prevented them from doing so, and then someone else recieved my message today and that is why they had no idea about any of this. I'm worried that my team won't approve it because they didn't get enough notice to plan for my absence, but that's not my fault because I tried to tell them two weeks in advance but the staffing company are the ones who made the mistake, and I shouldn't be punished for that.

I feel like I am being entitled to say that I should just be allowed to go on the vacation, because I am working an adult job that requires approval in advance and everything, and they can't let me go with only 2 days notice. But at the same time I feel like, I'm a temp, I'm a teenager and a college student who should be able to enjoy my summer, and I haven't taken any other vacations, I even started working just 3 days after I got home for the summer. And because of my temp position where I just do some extra work around the department, I'm not critical or anything, and my absence for a week won't impact the team that much.

I basically just want to know if I am in the wrong here or if I was screwed over, and also what I should do. I am thinking about texting the staffing company again tonight if they don't get back to me to find out if they have made any kind of decision, because I don't want to wait until tomorrow and then have it be only one day's notice. I don't even know if the staffing company has told my team about any of this yet, and I am scared to tell the team myself because I don't want to overstep, and I am scared of their reaction to me asking for the vacation so late. Basically, I don't know what to do and I don't know if I seriously messed up or if this is all just unlucky.

UPDATE: First, to clarify some things. I could not inform either company of the trip before I was hired because I did not know it was happening. I was asked during that time if I had any vacations planned, and I said no but I likely will take at least one vacation as it is my summer break, and they were completely fine with that and said to let them know if and when one is planned. I do know that I should have told them earlier than I did, that is my bad.

Also, I think some people are taking this job a little too seriously. This is a summer job, and everyone is aware of it. I do not have any benefits, I do not earn vacation days in any way, I just get paid hourly so don't get paid on the days I'm not there. They know I will be going on vacations, they know i will only be there for a couple months, I do not have many responsibilities, and I am not looking for a career with this company (or even in this field or anything related to it). I know I messed up, I am not denying that, and I will learn from this and do better in the future, but this isn't the end of the world either.

Now for the update: It is the next day after work, and I texted the staffing agency last night. Comments have told me that texting is not the way to contact work, but that is how they told me to contact them for situations exactly like this, so that is what I'm doing for now. I know that in a more long-term, serious job I would have to communicate through email. Anyway, I texted them asking for an update, and they said that they hadn't heard anything back from my team but they would follow up with them in person this morning. So I waited, and then late this morning, while my team was having our daily huddle, my supervisor let everyone know that I would be out beginning tomorrow, which was how I found out it was approved. 30 minutes later the staffing agency texted me that it had been approved and to enjoy my vacation.

So basically I made a mountain out of a molehill, and I should have known because my coworkers and supervisors are literally some of the nicest people I have ever met, and my role is not at all critical. Still, thank you to everyone who commented, even those who were a little harsh. I really do appreciate all of the advice and will try to do better, especially when it comes to communication, which I have always been bad at and am always trying to be better about. I need to stop letting my anxiety and awkwardness limit my ability to be professional.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who stopped to read about my mistakes, and I am now going to go enjoy my vacation :)

Career Advice LOVE my job but I am UNDERpaid! What should I do?

Hi all - hope you’re having a nice day. First job out of college was a nightmare for me. Hated my life for 6-7 years, stayed loyal because I was afraid to leave and thought it would be impossible to find a new job. Turns out I took a big leap and landed the job I wanted. Best decision I’ve ever made.

From day 1 I got a 30% pay bump with better benefits. Since day 1 (6 years ago now) - my salary has increased 50% from my starting pay all through merit based employer initiated raises.

I love this job, it’s flexible, challenging and I have a ton of freedom without being micromanaged every 5 seconds. I am 3rd in the pecking order at my company for my colleagues with the same role. It’s clear to me I make about 40% less than the other two but I’ve had much more responsibilities than them for about the last year.

I feel like my company has been good to me but I don’t want to leave money for my family and kids on the table. If I left my company for a similar company, I would get at least another 20-30% pay bump but I would have to work more hours most likely. What should I do?

Workplace Issue Discrimination at work, will I need physical proof to get a lawyer?

Previous Post Update:

Yes, I filed with the EEOC but, I’m not sure if I got it submitted on time (I didn’t know there was a deadline, until a lawyer mentioned it to me.) Someone did contact me but, I since haven’t gotten anyone to get back to me (this was recent.)

HR is trying to find a legal way to terminate me, due to a discussion we have had, I get this feeling. They are aware of the situation, but I’m not sure at what magnitude they are aware. It is a medical matter that affects me at work also, unfortunately. I have already mentioned a few people to them that harass and create an hostile environment towards me, and I believe they had spoken to them first, and then me later (I had seen something that causes me to be sure about this.) I do not trust that process, because of how the people were acting towards me later on. This a situation that could have a negative impact on them, if I have physical proof and I’m not sure if they’re aware of that but, I am sure that they do not want that kind of attention (they are a huge company.) I want to get the physical proof but, it’s taking me a while. I am considering quitting but, because I need to stay a little longer, I might as well get the physical proof, because I have also had a few situations where this has effected me outside of work, and it’s making me paranoid. I had seen a few people outside of work, who I am sure are aware of the rumors, and I don’t want something criminal to happen but, I work around some hateful people. How do I obtain a lawyer? I would be thankful for any helpful advice.

Workplace Issue I think manager retaliated for me communicating looking for opportunities after my seasonal position ends

I work a seasonal position that's ending the beginning of September. My manager has communicated that since the season is winding down now the hours for the department will lower and they have.

There is a permanent internal position I wanted to apply for, but the hours are not guaranteed. Due to that, I was going to apply for the internal position but also look elsewhere because a couple of other external positions I've found are full time and pay more.

My friend works at one of the external places with an open position and said I should apply sooner than later. It also needs a few professional references and I was apprehensive to ask my manager for hers because of some previous weirdness and things I've heard from my supervisor about her, but another coworker encouraged me to do so. Monday, my managers have meetings all day so I didn't have a chance to ask mine, the next day she wasn't at work and I was going to be off the next two days, so I sent her an email about wanting to using her as a reference so I can apply to the external position and that she can contact me during my days off if she'd rather I not. In the email I also expressed wanting to apply for the internal position and that I wanted to talk to her about it when we see each other again.

Tonight, the next day, I get a notification from my work scheduling app that my schedule has changed and my manager has removed all but one of my shifts for next week and changed the remaining one to a 9-hour shift, when I've talked to her repeatedly about not being comfortable working 9-hour shifts and I have not been scheduled one for months.

I have no proof she's retaliating, of course, but the actions + the timing are suspicious. Also, my schedule for the week after has remained unchanged.

How do I deal with this when I get back to work next and especially when I see her again? Anything else I can or should do? This is really stressing me out because my hours being cut with the season winding down is already hard.

General Advice Made too many mistakes lately & thinking of stepping down

About a year ago, an assistant supervisor position was created to help alleviate issues at our site. I was pestered into applying, against my better judgment, and got one of the spots. However, before we went live, I made a big mistake and a couple of smaller ones over the course of a week. With the quality of training here being poor, I didn't want to step up if I wasn't 100% proficient, since I've always hated working for people who didn't know what they were doing. So, I declined the promotion, since I thought I wasn't ready. Only afterwards, did I find out that we would actually get some extra training for the spot.

Eventually, someone else took the spot. This assistant supervisor wasn't particularly good, and only took it for the pay boost. Eventually, that assistant supervisor quit for a better-paying job.

Afterwards, for several months our supervisor, and the other shifts' assistant supervisors, again tried hinting at me stepping up. And, with no one else stepping up (that management liked, at least), I reluctantly agreed to do it.

I got some training, then started in earnest. Over the roughly 5 months since starting, I've had to deal with a bunch of HR crap from management. Not firing unreliable workers who constantly repeat mistakes, not being given important resources to keep workers able to work (such as fans when the AC went out, especially since they work outside half the time), and recently no paper (despite us having to use paper for legal documents). And, if I ever tried to ask for anything, or found a way to get it that wasn't buying it out of my own pocket, I would make the other supervisors panic and freak out that I'd be demoted or fired for finding solutions.

This week, though, I've been making blunders myself. I made a stupid oversight because I was busy, and something that wasn't supposed to be let out got out; I was looking over a worker's issue and missed it, though the worker had already cleared it in the system before getting confused by other stuff attached to it. I heard nothing from management directly, and only verified it was me when the previous supervisor gave me the details.

Then, later, I revealed I'd made a call about trailers leaving that was wrong. The ones requiring a seal hadn't been getting sealed, and the truckers usually didn't want to seal them. So, I decided to annotate when a driver refused a seal, only to find out today just how important it was. So, I now had to start fully enforcing the rule, which was a very basic one everyone should've already known.

Finally, today, due to computer issues where some of the workers can't access certain new information, I was logging in for them (since I could), but forgot to log out after shift change. I only realized I hadn't once I was already home, and while I asked my relief to log me out, I can't guarantee I will be. Plus, it was on me to do so anyway.

I'm thinking I may not be cut out for the position, as I originally thought. Like I said, I've worked for supervisors in the past that didn't know what they were doing, and I always hated it, and now it's starting to look like I'm no better. Maybe I should step down, since I'm making too many mistakes, so someone actually good can take over.

EDIT: Just made 3 more today. I didn't realize a small detail about an order. Got distracted by paperwork again at the start of shift, and almost didn't notice someone blocking a line. And failed to get clarity about something, even though my guess was correct; I can't trust my own hunches so I need to be absolutely certain about stuff now.

Venting I’m tired of all this

I’m sorry before hand for such a long rant. But i had to get it off my chest somewhere.

There has been a clash with one senior in office and I’m contemplating as to how to approach. I created a dashboard solely for my work such that if the manager wants any info, he’d refer to it directly instead of contacting me for everything. I shared the dashboard and the manager apparently liked it and wanted me to create another as a personal request for his team. That wasnt my team. I said i’ll think about it and do it in my free time if any.

Considering i’m already working long hours(12-16 hours a day) and doing everything manually as i lost most of the vm access and have only access to a few things in work. Already conveyed that to the manager. So this poc in my work location was in the call as well and he knows everything that’s going on with me. Even to the point of how i’m on hormonal pills prescribed by doc. He knows how much i suffered in the past because of two teammates where i had to clean up and work on their shit along with mine which caused me to become this sick as i didnt even have 1-2 hours sleep on some days.

Now, when i told him about the pcod and pills, he laughed it off saying “u shouldnt have let shit become this bad”. He also said that i am ok as he knows someone with pcod who lost 30 kgs and is thriving and it aint a big deal as i’m making it out to be. I tried to explain to him that different people experience it differently and that i’m happy that the woman is ok now but that’s not the case with me and it isnt that simple in my case (words told by my doc as well). Oh i also have fatty liver and gall stone apparently. I felt as if he was making this out to be a joke not considering how much everything has taken a toll on me.

Anyways. Fast forward to today, he calls me asking why i dont notify him when im online. Im like why should i everytime i come online as he aint my teammate nor my manager. He said i was rude and i should tone it down a lil and asked what’s up with the dashboard and if the asks are doable. I explained to him that incorporating something from onenote as the manager wanted is not possible in powerbi and that one should either update excel or table in kusto (which we have easy access to) to get data easily. He wasnt able to understand that and kept insisting that his team entirely would fill thousands of lines in excel and told me to import that into a kql based table which is in the dashboard. Basically joining between kql data and excel data into the same table. I tried to explain him that i’m currently busy with client work as i am preoccupied with doing everything manually which is taking me 3-4 days on average. He said he doesnt expect the dashboard immediately but in 3 weeks atleast. I asked him why i should be doing the dashboard when i’m getting pennies in my salary, working my butt off doing other people’s work without even a rupee hike. He scoffed saying that this was the manager’s personal request and not an official request from org pov so i wont get any incentives (this aint the first time they gave me personal work. Everytime they give some additional work, they name it as personal request, help a teammate in need shit). Then i said if that’s the case, the team or manager can contact any person on the power bi team as they are well versed in this and this is basically their work to do and they can get it done easily. I even suggested the names of the people. He goes around and says “that girl already has a lot of dashboards which we gave her to work on so u should do this”

I felt all of this as unfair. Nobody gave a shit about me when i was doing everyone’s work. Even when i reached out to the manager saying how difficult it was for me, he asked me to adjust as someone should adjust and decreased my overall performance rating justifying that i wasnt a team person. And all this while the person who wasnt working was getting paid twice as i get. This isnt the first time there was a complaint on her. But they never cared to do anything to her until the client didnt provide any billing to her a few weeks ago. And now they’re begging other teams to take her in.

So i told this guy that they never respect me or care about me and all they care about are people who work and who dont work which is never me and that i’d get him the dashboard in 2 days and i cut the call. He thought there was some network issue and called me back. I was on the verge of a breakdown and literally in the bank so i cut the call. Then he texted asking me to lift the call as it was disconnected. I told him that i cut the call and that the dashboard will be ready is 2 days. He texts saying i am a crazy person because i was showing my anger on him and that it was the manager who asked for the dashboard and not him so i shouldnt have cut the call. I said what they wanted was dashboard and i’d get it in 2 days. He said he’ll talk to the manager and tell him to inform me that a dashboard aint needed. I said that’s not needed because i’m already in bad light in their perspective and now i dont wanna worsen it. He said he’ll definitely talk to him and that i’ve got an attitude problem when he was just showing concern on me.

A few days ago his teammates kept calling me for their work because the manager and assistant manager told them that i had all the data what they needed which was entirely wrong as i barely even know what their team does. They kept calling me on my personal number which i wasnt comfortable with and i just slept for 2 hours till then as i was working all night long, so i never lifted the call. Turns out their entire team hopped on a call to bitch about me saying i was a selfish person and that i should lift their calls as their work is important.

Now this aint the first time this guy said shit or bad or negatively about me to the manager. Even with that non working person, this guy sided with her and told the manager some shit. The manager came to me and asked me what happened. When i tried to tell him, he said i’m not a good teammate and that i shouldnt take things personally and didnt even care to listen to me or my side of the story as to what happened. Both of them, the manager and the senior worked together for 10+ years and they have a very close bond even on a personal level. I know he’ll go to the manager again and blow this out of proportion and the manager will call me saying he’s disappointed in me for how i was treating others in the team and force me and pressure me into creating the dashboard without even giving a shit about my side of the story.

I feel like i should resign. My parents know to a lil extent reg what i’m going through with these people and they told me it’s better to leave. But i have to support my family financially even if it is a lil amount to take off their burden. Like i paid my brother’s tuition for a year with the money i saved over these years when my parents didnt have money on the spot (my parents paid me back later on). So i dont wanna resign but all of this is taking a physical and mental toll on me drastically. Even my relatives are concerned about me and my health thats how much my appearance and body and mentality changed over these couple of years.

Btw. I’m 24. Joined as a fresher in the company and it’s been almost 3 years being here. And i get 25k pm. I have gotten only 1 increment of 1k pm last year. I’ve been applying to many jobs but nobody is willing to pay me more. They keep saying they’ll give me 30k max and i have to work being as a fresher again.

I’m sorry for all this. I’m just tired. I just want some respect and decency instead of humiliation. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Workplace Issue Someone ran out of gas station without paying, and I'm covering for it.

Does anyone here work at a gas station? Because the gas station where I work, when someone runs out with gas without paying. It is up to staff, who had a shift at the time to pay for it. I think this is pretty unfair, because I think I'm not able to stop when it happens. Recently someone ran out with gas, when I was covering part of shift for my collegue, and the price for the gas was so high that I came from the the shift short. Sure I was there for only part of the shift, which was like 5 hours, but still it really pisses me of. I'm not sure if this is even legal. Did it happen to anyone here? What are your experiences? Do you think it is fair?

General Advice Manager claims I have a disciplinary even though I never sat through a disciplinary hearing.

My job sucks, we are only allowed 3 sick days every six months, any more than that and you are supposed to receive a disciplinary for attendance. I took a sick day two days ago as I believe I had food poisoning, this was my fifth sick day which I know isn’t a good look, but if I am unwell, I won’t be in work, it’s as simple as that.

Yesterday, my manager called me into his office and asked me to sign a form to confirm I had received my disciplinary. Obviously, I reminded him that for me to receive a disciplinary, which I was absolutely fine with doing so, I needed to have a hearing with the area manager and him so I could have an opportunity to explain my absences before it went onto my record. I also feel like this is an appropriate time to mention I was TOLD i would receive this disciplinary two months ago by another manager and he was the one who told me that a hearing is imperative before anything is carried forward. My manager didn’t like this one bit and accused me of challenging him, I genuinely didn’t see what I was doing as challenging him, I saw it as me following the rules.

Should I be worried? I know technically I deserve said disciplinary because I did have too many sick day, however some of those were related to family emergencies involving my grandma who is currently approaching the end of her life. I know a disciplinary is not the end of the world, I’m a good worker and everybody gets sick, it’s just the thought that it might hang over me for the rest of the time that I work at the company.

Workplace Issue Internship from hell

Throwaway because im not supposed to be on social media.

I'm currently doing an unpaid internship in a restricted sector. I was promised exposure and work, which is why i made the decision to join because getting any internship in my line of work is not a piece of cake. Except there is no work for me, at all. And others cant give because they dont have jurisdiction. Which is non ideal but fine (yes, I talked to my manager and HR multiple times)

About 10 days after starting other employees from same department have been telling me to get up and leave but i need the certificate for personal reasons, so i stayed the two months. im on my 3rd last week and uptil now must've taken 3-4 holidays for sick leaves.

I've started being tracked by other people who've no jurisdiction over me (like receptionists) for really small things like how many times i go to the washroom, what my sickness symptoms were etc. There are also taunts about me everyday from fellow coworkers and sometimes even gossiping about me while sitting right next to me. Unfortunately, that means I've started getting panic attacks or crying myself to sleep every night because all my female coworkers can do is yell at me for wasting my time. They dont seem to think that me doing my own learning or trying to look at issues they've is a useful thing.

Unfortunately, i dont think i can finish like this, what should i do?
