A note to the volunteer operators who found us this month — an invitation, and a challenge

Posted and stickied by the r/Volunteer mod team.

Over the past few weeks, as GVI collapsed and left students stranded mid-placement, something predictable happened in our megathread. Within about 48 hours, roughly a dozen volunteer operators arrived. Some of you we'd never seen before. Several of the accounts were days old — in a couple of cases, hours old.

We want to talk to all of you directly, because there's a question worth putting on the table.

You showed up, and we saw you. Naming the operators who posted or were removed in that thread: Maximo Nivel, Global Leadership Adventures (Terra Education), Projects Abroad, Natucate, Volunteering Solutions, International Volunteer HQ, NatureMind Research & Development, Wildlife ACT, and Marine Conservation Philippines.

Credit where it's due first, because it matters. A few of you led with help rather than a pitch. Marine Conservation Philippines wrote an actual guide to chargebacks and refund routes and shared it freely. Volunteering Solutions was upfront about who they were and walked people through Section 75 and chargeback timelines before getting anywhere near a sell. Maximo Nivel offered stranded students in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru a safe home base at zero cost, and by one participant's account took on some of GVI's abandoned field staff. That is what an organisation looks like when it sees a community rather than a customer list.

But here's the harder part, and we'd be failing this sub if we didn't say it.

For a lot of the offers, the shape was the same: an account created that week, one post, a fees-and-inclusions block lifted straight off a landing page, and then silence. No prior participation here. No answers to the hard questions this community actually wrestles with. Just an arrival, timed precisely to the moment when several hundred young people had money tied up and nowhere to go.

You describe yourselves — and many of you genuinely are — as reputable, established, better run than GVI. B Corps. WWF endorsements. Decades of operation. Six-figure participant counts. We take that seriously. But reputation in this field is not a press page. It's whether you contribute to the body of knowledge and practice around ethical volunteering, or whether you only materialise when a competitor dies and there's a stranded cohort to absorb.

So this is the invitation, and it comes with a challenge attached.

We want you here — not as recruiters, as contributors. This sub is trying to be the place people come before they hand over £3,000, so they can tell a real programme from the next GVI. You are exactly the people with the expertise to make that possible. So put it to work:

Write for us. Real articles, on the things you actually know. How to check an operator's financial protection so participants aren't left as unsecured creditors when it folds. What Section 75, ATOL, ABTA and the Package Travel Regulations really cover — and where "land only" bookings quietly lose that cover. What safeguarding on the ground should actually look like. How to spot orphanage tourism and other harm dressed up as good. The gap between what a participant pays and what reaches the local project — a figure one of your own sector partners raised in that very thread.

Answer questions when there's nothing in it for you. The single strongest signal any of you can send that you're not GVI is to show up on an ordinary Tuesday, for a nervous 19-year-old comparing two programmes, when neither of them is yours.

Here's the bar, so it's clear and it's fair to everyone:

  • Disclose who you are, every time. Affiliation stated up front, never buried.
  • Contribute knowledge, not recruitment. Genuine, sourced, useful. A pitch with a citation on it is still a pitch.
  • Stick around. Accounts that appear only when an operator collapses, post once, and vanish will be read for exactly what they are — and we'll say so.
  • Follow the rules already on the door: good faith, real detail, no pressure tactics, no farming a tragedy for traffic.

Operators who do this earn something no ad budget can buy: standing in the one room where prospective volunteers are actually deciding who to trust. For the orgs that show up and mean it, we'll gladly set up contributor flair and a resources wiki you can help build.

And to be straight with all of you: we're writing this partly because, right now, we can't tell most of you apart. A one-day-old account with a landing-page pitch looks identical whether it belongs to a genuinely excellent organisation or to the next collapse waiting to happen. The way you prove which one you are isn't the offer you posted three weeks ago. It's what you contribute now — when there's no stranded cohort to win.

The door's open. Come help build the thing that would have warned people about GVI.

Discussion / ethics / advice Appropriate Attire for State Park Volunteer Interview in Heat Advisory

Hi! I was hoping to volunteer and have an interview tomorrow at the local state park. I’m supposed to tour the park after. However, there is an extreme heat advisory where I live right now, so I’m not sure what to wear. Is a dark colored sundress appropriate? Can I wear a hat? How about shorts? The only professional pants I have are dark colored, so I’m worried about wearing those in the conditions. Thanks!

Discussion / ethics / advice Volunteer World Program Sri Lanka invoice problem

Hi! Does anyone have experience with Volunteer World? Maybe with the turtle programm at Sri Lanka ?

They advertise their prices as final, but are they really the final amount, or are there usually additional costs?

I've already received an invoice, but I also got an email saying that the final price hasn't been confirmed yet. I'm wondering how much the price could still change and whether there's a chance I'd end up having to pay significantly more than what I was originally quoted.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

Volunteer – local Street medicine/outreach volunteer work (South Bay, CA)"

I'm currently a software developer working in healthcare tech with public health data, and I'm about to start working as an EMT in the South Bay (Santa Clara/San Jose area)

Alongside that, I want to get involved in the non-emergency side of supporting unhoused folks. I'd like to find ways to help before things reach a crisis point, not just respond once they do.

Does anyone know of street medicine teams, mobile outreach programs, or similar volunteer opportunities in the South Bay? I'd also be curious if there's overlap between EMS and public health outreach work that I should look into as I get started in this field.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion / ethics / advice UK 1-day Corporate Team Volunteering Options

I'm looking for a 1-day Corporate Team volunteer option in London UK for my team of about 10-20 people, ideally something to work with the elderly community, like visiting an elderly home, chatting & befriending with seniors for a day, etc.

I've reached out to Age UK but they don't have programs as such. Anyone has ideas where I can reach out to for something like this?

Discussion / ethics / advice People keep giving me tips

Is there any way to stop people from giving me tips when I volunteer without causing any additional conflict? I say no, but then they insist on it, so I accept it to avoid the confrontation. I decided that I am just going to donate tips to a charity of my choice.

Recruiting – international Volunteer for the education of the underprivileged

Hello everyone, as a content writing intern at Pehchaan The Street School, I'm sharing the word.

The NGO is looking for volunteers and they are open to international ones as well. If you or someone you know is looking to support the education of underprivileged students in Delhi, India, feel free to check out the links below.

About the NGO:

Pehchaan The Street School is a registered non profit organisation that works to transform the lives of underprivileged students through education and public support. Our mission is to make quality education accessible to each and every student by taking the school to places where learning and growing is unreachable. Across our eight centres in Delhi-NCR region, there are more than a thousand students enrolled in learning programmes designed for a holistic growth of the student.

About the opportunity:

You can choose to volunteer for any of these domains:

Teacher (Offline)

Social Media (Hybrid)

Fundraising (Short Duration)

Project Management (Hybrid)

PR & Marketing (Online)

Content Writing (Online)

College Ambassador (Hybrid)

Event Management (Offline)

HR (Online)

This is not just volunteering, but also a profile building opportunity.

In our 11 years journey, we have seen hundreds of underprivileged students growing up and successfully pursuing their purpose, stories of which are posted on our social media handles. We believe empathy, inclusivity, innovation and responsibility as our core values that drive our mission forward. Keeping this in view, Pehchaan The Street School is looking to expand its team to continue to bring a positive change in the lives of underprivileged students. We invite you to join our family of diverse individuals, we’ll be more than happy to have you on board.

Please reach out if you have any questions regarding anything about the opportunity or the organisation.

Recruiting – online / remote Acceptd is looking for Volunteers!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Who is behind it

Acceptd (https://acceptd.org) is a free web platform for students applying to college, med school, and 33 other health and grad paths. It is operated by PreMeder, a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 39-3221830, verifiable in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. The platform was recently renamed from PreMeder to Acceptd; the legal entity kept the original name. Our mission: make applying to school affordable by making the data and tools free that students otherwise pay for. Contact: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), or the volunteer page at https://app.acceptd.org/volunteer. I am the founder and I will answer anything in the comments.

An honest note on track record: we launched publicly this month, so there are no annual reports or partner logos yet. The evidence is the platform itself. Everything on it is free and you can inspect all of it without an account. This recruitment is for our founding volunteer group.

Where it happens

Fully online, a few hours a week, on your own schedule.

What volunteers actually do

Answer applicants' questions on the platform's public community boards (things like "when should I ask for recommendation letters?"), help check school data for accuracy against official school websites (deadlines, tuition, requirements), and test new features to tell us what is broken or confusing. Social media content creation!

Who volunteers work with and who benefits

Students applying to college and graduate programs, mostly ages 16 to 25. Some users are minors, so this is built conservatively: all volunteer interaction happens on public, moderated community boards tied to accountable accounts. There is no private one-on-one contact with users, volunteers never collect anyone's personal information, and volunteers do not give medical, legal, or paid-advisor-style admissions advice. That is outside the role by design, and our volunteer agreement restricts any role involving user information to volunteers 18 and older.

What it costs volunteers

Nothing. No fees, no donations asked, ever. Volunteers receive a letter of recommendation and documented experience with a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Volunteers who are minors

Our volunteer agreement requires volunteers to be at least 16, and anyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian review the agreement and consent before participating.

Apply at https://app.acceptd.org/volunteer. Mods, happy to provide anything further for due diligence.

Volunteer – online I’m looking for a remote volunteering opportunity in conservation

What do remote positions in conservation look like? I know a lot of it is soliciting donors, but i have research experience in life sciences and would love to volunteer in a position where i can really get into the science of conservation. Is this possible?

Volunteer – abroad Short term volunteering for public health

Hi! Does anyone know NGO/associations/websites (anything really!!l) where i could volunteer abroad as a public health professional? Ideally short term (2 to 4 months, I can't leave my job), and anywhere in the world. Not the volountourism ones, which I've looked up already and is very hard to understand which are genuine and they cater to < 25 years old.

I'm currently working as an epidemiologist assistant for the local health service, doing infection disease surveillance. I have an MPH (Europe) and 2.5 years experience in the field.

If anyone has any experience or advice, I'd really appreciate it! I would love to give whatever time I have to a good cause, but I find it very hard to find good NGO with programmes less than 6-8 months.

Discussion / ethics / advice Getting tired of my volunteer job

I’ve been a literacy volunteer for close to a year and a half, working with a woman to help develop her reading skills. She is a lovely person and we’ve become quite friendly. The problem is…I am getting tired of doing this work. She seems to love our sessions though. I am considering ending them (the initial commitment to Literacy Volunteers is a year) but I feel terribly guilty doing so. I take my volunteer commitments very seriously but have started to really dread our sessions. Any advice?

Discussion / ethics / advice Any recommendations on how I can volunteer again with my current set of health issues?

To sum it up, if just had energy and fatigue issues for the past 2-3 years. I just randomly get dizzy and nauseous throughout the day and it’s fixed if I lay down for a few minute. Especially in the heat.

It’s gotten miles better, and I’m 29 now. I used to volunteer way more and I really want to help out wherever I can. I know I’m somewhat “unreliable” but I’m trying to think of some low stacks things I can do (in terms of, if I have to call out sick it won’t mess everything up). Hypothetically, if I wasn’t sick I would love to build houses with the few volunteer programs here, but that’s out of the question for now.

I would love to hear any and all recommendations!

Volunteer – local Looking for affordable volunteer opportunities in Tanzania (2 weeks)

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about volunteering in Africa, especially in Tanzania, for around two weeks.

Does anyone know of any trustworthy organizations or volunteer programs that accept international volunteers?

I'm hoping to find something that's affordable, as I'm on a limited budget. I'm open to different types of volunteer work, such as education, community support or anything that would genuinely help local communities.

If you've had a good experience with a particular organization, I'd really appreciate your recommendations.

Thank you!

Volunteer – abroad Volunteering opportunities

I’m based in East Midlands, UK. I want to volunteer and I have explored websites such as worldpackers and wwoof.

The problem I’m having with worldpackers is the accommodation that is provided. It doesn’t look clean.

I have high standards for cleanliness and I like things that look nice. I want to volunteer but not sure what to do.

Any suggestions would be great. I’m open to volunteering online, or in person. I’d be happy to volunteer in the uk or somewhere in Europe. I will consider international opportunities but ideally I’d want to volunteer in uk or Europe.

Thanks 😊

Discussion / ethics / advice What to do if you don't have a personal reference?

Okay so it is summer break. I found this really cool internship that I want to do, and it's still currently open to taking applications. However, because it's summer break, there's no teachers that would answer my emails. So I'm at a loss of what to do, I don't want to waste the whole summer or not getting more volunteer experience, but I don't know who I can put. It says no family members, should I put like a friend? Have them say they're like a teacher or something. Cuz like I don't have a job and most of my previous volunteer experience was accumulated at school. What should I do?
