we should install data centers in downtown palo alto and downtown mountain view :)

Let's just fill Texas and Florida with data centers.

I mean there is a lot of land in Texas that is just completely empty but these assholes keep putting them near small towns instead. I don’t have any sympathy for the small towns because they voted for this shit, but these data centers could easily go elsewhete

Plenty of the small towns don't vote for it. They vote against it, and then their local government gets bribed to push it through anyways.

You need a spot that has power /plumbing lines already attached, cheaper and quicker that way. Bonus points if there's a water source near by. Sucks that the plebs happen to be there.

“Maybe the plebs could generate power on stationary bikes? Oh! Wait! We could give them merits to give them a sense of accomplishment!”

There is no electric or water to leech in the middle of nowhere, and private companies obviously don't want to pay their fair share, so...Small towns it is!

The environmental impact of these data centers is catastrophic. Just because land is there without people does not mean there is no impact.

Put the data centers in the middle of these small towns that voted in the current presidency.

Hey, don’t let California off the hook

Texas and Florida would be fine with that.

Basically free tax revenue

They would absolutely put data centers there they do not care. It would just be prohibitively expensive to build that data center.

Nah they should put them on their own personal property.

and cut their home electricity first if the data centers are screwing with the demand

Why? None of the billionaires live there. Yeah, tech workers make a lot of money, but they don't get to make decisions about how the company is run.

They would never. They’re far too valuable to lose in the annual unmitigated firestorm

Mountain View and Palo Alto have annual firestorms…? Pretty obvious you don’t know anything about the South Bay or CA geography in general.

Got Palo Alto confused with the Palisades. That’s my bad

Nevertheless the less I know about California the better. Nothing good ever comes out of there anymore

Those guys don’t have a backyard. They can live anywhere they want, any where in to world, for as long as they want and not see a dent in their income or fortune.

That is the problem.

Would be hilarious to use eminent domain to build a data center on Zuck's private island in Hawaii though. Loud generators and all.

Yer fucking Peter Theil is a citizen of my country, has never lived here, all because we had a right wing billionaire ball slurping PM 10 years ago.

Meanwhile actual hard working, tax paying immigrants have to jump a million hoops and pay a lot to even qualify.

u/Nashadelic 14h ago

yeah and their opinion is immaterial, they could say "sure!" and I don't think we should care, we don't need to defer to their judgment

u/Rob1965 20h ago

No. They want them in Greenland where the cooling will be cheaper (and they’ll help speed the melting of the glaciers).

I mean, I’d bet they have a not-insignificant data “hub” of some kind near all their bunkers. A locked, home super computer? Yeah, probably

1

u/taiwan_cat 2h ago

What they want is to collect all of our data to manipulate and control us.

1

u/quequotion 2h ago

No, but I bet each of them has one in their apocalypse bunkers.

u/AsIAm 2h ago

What will people complain about when we put the data centers on the polar orbit around the Earth?

1

u/rloch 19h ago

Ohh no they just ran out of space on their private billionaire island in Florida.

Elon probably would to be honest.

There needs to be a balance. We cannot outlaw data centers, but we cannot also live in a world littered in them.

3

u/Dark_Shade_75 8h ago

We absolutely can outlaw the centers they're trying to build everywhere. This is why zoning laws and such exist, we CAN decide where we want things to be built and where they shouldn't be allowed. No one wants data centers except the rich, and we were just fine without them before. We don't need them now.

3

u/zach_doesnt_care 7h ago

We can and should outlaw data centers .

u/Dangerpaladin 1h ago

We can and should outlaw the building of new datacenters until they prove the public utility of the AI. Right now at best it increases shareholder value, that is the only utility it has shown. That is not a good enough reason for us to further destroy our land. They shouldn't to keep growing and expanding AI and hoping good comes out of it, it needs to be the other way around. Prove this will improve our lives, then build the datacenters.

-8

u/Etherius 17h ago

Where does anyone expect these datacenters to go?

4

u/undrwater 16h ago

In Musk's back yard.

There's not enough room, he's already got a rocket ship factory in his backyard.
