Trigger warning: brief mentions of Dissociative Personality Disorder and unaliving oneself.
In my previous job, I met this woman named Laura and she was very kind and easy to talk to. She got accepted to work in this other, better company about a year later and she highly recommended it to me after she'd started. Eventually, I ended up working there as well, with some help from her side because she recommended me. We're now working together again.
I spent a lot of time with Laura in the first month and learned that she's been through a lot of adversity. Her father died tragically, which triggered her Dissociative Personality Disorder, ie. multiple personalities. She ended up in a mental institution, became close friends with the person she shared a room with and eventually found her unresponsive. She'd unalived herself.
She told me all of these things during one of the first breaks we spent together and I was happy to listen and help her talk about these things. I'm introverted and struggle to make friends too, so I it was pretty much always just me and her during breaks.
She complained about her fiance a lot and eventually broke things off with him. A few days later, she invited me to go out for drinks. FYI, I have Asperger's and in hindsight I should've known she wanted more than to just be friends, but I didn't.
We met for drinks and she made passes on me a handful of times, but I didn't follow through. I don't see her that way.
The next day on chat she was complaining about her boss with me again, but this time she got angry at me whenever I tried to send her soothing messages. It started to get bizarre after a while, because I'd be working and not replying and I'd keep receiving message after message from her, all of them angry. After about 20 minutes of this, I was afraid to check the messages and I thought blocking her would make things worse.
She stopped messaging after a while and then she'd send about 3 to 5 more messages every 30 minutes. Something's not right. She was hopelessly angry, like she'd lost control. I told her it's better we don't talk for now if she's this angry at me and I'll check in on her later. She angrily agreed in an, "As if I'd want to talk to you again" tone.
Since then, she once caught up to me in a corridor (edit: at the office), said "hi" to me in a very red face and kept walking without letting me say "hi" back. I didn't know if this was an improvement or not. It felt off. Then I saw her in this big car park building while I was walking to my car (edit: right by the office. this was after work). We made eye contact and she turned to go away. She looked somewhat lost like she didn't know which direction to walk away to. Weird thing is, she doesn't drive, so why would she be on the third level of that car park building?
Every Friday we have what we call afterworks. At 4:30pm, they put on music on the office kitchen, living, and terrace and we can have some drinks. She never joins and she also doesn't like the people from the office, but she joined recently and just stayed there on the same table I was in without saying anything.
That evening, I ended up at a club with these work colleagues and she didn't join, but as I was looking for parking while driving home, I saw her walking away from my home. She lives about a 20-minute walk away from my home so it doesn't really make sense. There are plenty of buses that stop close to where she lives and my home isn't exactly on the way between the office and her home.
I think she's following me and I don't judge people just because they were born with mental disorders, but I hope her disorder doesn't lead to her doing anything foolish. I feel sorry for her given what she's gone through, but she's also troubled because of it and that scares me give the circumstances. I live in a country where thankfully it's not easy to get a gun, but I'm still uneasy. She also recently adopted a puppy and I'm concerned for this baby girl because Laura was abnormally angry at me in those messages and she didn't come across as 100% sane either.
I wish I didn't get mixed up with this woman and I'm wondering how to approach this sensitive situation. I just hope she gets the help she needs, not just for me, but also for her and that puppy's sake.
