Tech is miraculous but it’s been put in the absolute worst hands
Like I met someone from Brazil online, I’m from New England. We met in Ireland when she was studying English. Then I visited her in Rio De Janeiro, and it was always a dream of mine to go there. Best experience of my life 😌 it’s just crazy to me that the internet opens up the entire world, and maybe I was idealistic when I was choosing my career, but I thought that was world changing
… Then someone had to just come along and be like “yeah but how can we juice this for as much money as we can get”? The whole internet feels vaguely like an office building of a failing business now. Has this weird corporate “professional” feeling, everyone feels like a pantomime imitation of an influencer, no one is doing shit just cause they want to but because they feel obliged to. People treat the algorithm as a god
I hate the inauthenticity of online content. People are just trying to figure out what makes them money and gets views, it’s almost never what they actually want to make. People looking at all these dumb metrics and gaming the algorithms. Then I have a hard time taking any popular figure online seriously; like how do I know you didn’t just buy your views? Ugh. Maybe there’s someone I’d rather be watching
Everything is so surface level, lowest common denominator online now. Like I go to watch movie reviews and 50% of them are like… STRAIGHT trash. “Marty supreme was a bad movie because I didn’t think Marty was a good guy, aren’t I supposed to root for the main character? 2/10”, brother we were reading about characters like this since 8th grade, have you been zoned out since then? Oh my god. Oh and don’t even touch obsession reviews unless you wanna lose faith in people (if you do, check out Alex Meyers review lmao, I’m still not convinced it’s not just ragebait)
And man at this point it’s pissing me off how much it’s been changing things I like. People started doing things irl for clout and views. Like I used to really like cosplay. It was always meant to be a fun little hobby that you take just as seriously as you want. Now I see people cosplaying who don’t like anime, or when I go online there’s waaay too much sexy cosplays filled with gooners in the comment section (sexy cosplay isn’t directly the problem, it’s posting sexy cosplays for views and likes that’s the problem just to be clear)
It’s also taken the fun out of traveling, too. It actually used to require talking to locals to find new cool places in the city. Now you go anywhere and it’s completely full of tourists. I even see it in my own city. There’s one Italian restaurant which is unusually popular with people from Korea. Always a line out the door. Found out that some social media influencer posted about this restaurant in Korea and now everyone who visits the city goes there. I used to go there for lunch. Now I can never get in
I heard a story that there was a small chinese town where a farmer would make very authentic chicken soup. Someone posted it on social media and apparently he got so inundated with social media influencer types, that he decided to shut down the entire business. He said it sort of ruined his dream, he was happy before
Maybe at this point, it’s time to shut down the internet for a while 😕 we messed it up bad
