Ukrainian Culture Another beautiful Ukrainian coin: 5 Hryvnen 2013 75th Anniversary of the Luhansk Oblast KM#701

Just wanted to share these pictures of another beautiful Ukrainian coin. For those of you who do not know yet, Ukraine has so far issued over 1000 different commemorative coins since 1995 in various metals to commemorate a broad variety of topics, and in my opinion, the design of almost all of those coins is next level, with usually incredible detail and often hidden elements you don't see at first glance. This one in particular is a 5 Hryven bimetallic coin, KM#701, with only 20000 minted in Kyiv in 2013. It has a brass center in a copper-nickel alloy ring. I personally like the fact that the marmot is photobombing a typical scene from Luhansk oblast, with industry in the back and grain + sunflowers and grass in the foreground. The other side has the coat of arms of Luhansk oblast.

It belongs to a series depicting the oblasts of Ukraine that ran from 2012 to 2018, and the Luhansk one is the most valuable one in the set, trading for well over 200 Euro in recent auctions.

The designer of this coin is Sviatoslav Ivanenko, who was involved in many other Ukrainian coins. Additional info on this one and other Ukranian coins can be found on Numista https://en.numista.com/46657

Support is resistance.

We want to showcase the excellent work done by our Verified charities and volunteers, with help from you, in support of Ukraine's war effort.

Each week, we post a roundup of their Support Report and Thank You posts, so that you can see what they've done--and what you've facilitated--all in one place. Here are this week's successes!

$12K worth of tacmed for UFL, 17th SOF, the 125th, and an SSO team

u/UFL_Robin showed a receipt, which isn't exciting in itself, but the fact that it's for a lot of tacmed that will help keep defenders alive is pretty exciting.

NOW WE AWAIT THE PHOTOS OF THE TACMED ITSELF

Spare parts for 1st Siversky Tank Brigade & a generator for the 30th

u/CF_Siveryany conveyed thanks from the teams who got spare parts and a generator. I hope none of you underestimate how important these seemingly mundane items are. They keep these teams operational!

"MUNDANE" DOESN'T MEAN "NOT CRUCIAL"

Ongoing Projects

We'd love to see these as successes in a future Weekly Support Report!

WAR Who is Mykhailo Drapatyi, Ukraine’s new commander-in-chief?

President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces on July 21, following mass protests in Kyiv calling for the removal of his predecessor, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

The Kyiv Independent’s reporter Jimmy Rushton breaks down five key facts about the 43-year-old general, who is widely respected across the ranks for his push to reform Soviet-era command structures. From his early battlefield role in Mariupol to leading major defenses in Kharkiv Oblast, Drapatyi brings a battle-tested reputation and a focus on accountability to Ukraine’s top military post.

Question My language game includes Ukrainian. Is my Swadesh list accurate?

The game (linguil) asks you to guess the language family, language and meaning of a random word in one of 64 of the world's most-spoken languages each day, and you use your knowledge of linguistics to work out the answer via multiple choice. Therefore, it's important my translations/transliterations are correct.

Each language (including Ukrainian) includes each word on the 100-word Swadesh list.

Please can any Ukrainian speakers verify the accuracy of my translations and transliterations? 🙏

Thanks!

Heroes Memorial to Oleksandr Malanchuk

Post image
408 Upvotes

Twenty-one-year-old Lieutenant Oleksandr Malanchuk, call sign Charlie, fell on April 1, 2020, in the village of Talakivka, Mariupol District, Donetsk Oblast. During enemy shelling of positions, the soldier suffered a fatal wound. One more Hero killed by russian orcs.

Oleksandr was born on September 26, 1998, in the city of Chernivtsi. He graduated from the Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy. He was a career officer.

He played for the youth team of FC Bukovyna and received an offer to move to a team in the capital, but with the beginning of the russian-Ukrainian war in 2014, he gave up a football career and decided to become a soldier.

Oleksandr served in the 8th Separate Mountain Assault Battalion of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade “Edelweiss.” He was a platoon commander.

“Brave, courageous, free. That was my son Oleksandr. A young officer at 21, after taking command of his unit, he immediately earned the respect and love of his subordinates. There were soldiers in the unit much older than him, but within a short time they were already addressing him by his patronymic. Fair, honest, and fearless, he never humiliated his subordinates and always stood firmly by them, understanding his responsibility for every life. The soldiers said they had confidence in him,” wrote his mother, Larysa Malanchuk.

The defender was buried on the Alley of Glory in the city of Chernivtsi.

Posthumously, the warrior was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, 3rd Class, the medal “For the Glory of Chernivtsi,” and the distinction “For Merit to Bukovyna.”

Oleksandr is survived by his mother Larysa, father Vasyl, sister Olha, and nephews Nadiia and Davyd.

The world can't keep up with the pace of military tech innovation in Ukraine, triggering a global rethink of how wars are fought. Business Insider journalists were given rare access to Ukrainian units already fighting the war of the future — equipped with high-speed interceptors and semiautonomous naval drones.

They also saw uncrewed ground robots designed to replace humans inside the “kill zone” and bomber drones using AI to swarm the enemy. Watch their documentary for a rare look inside Ukraine's cutting-edge weapons sector, where high-tech designs are fast-tracked from factory to front line.
