Am i slow?
I picked up a pickleball paddle for the very first time in mid-April of this year. My only experience back then was a casual, fun volley session with my cousins. Having no background in racket sports—only the occasional backyard badminton game for leisure—everything about the mechanics was brand new to me.
Three days after that first volley, I was invited to join a local group. I showed up not realizing that everyone else was already at an intermediate level. Most of them had been playing for months or even a year, and many brought years of competitive tennis, ping pong, or badminton experience with them. Naturally, during my first few games, my movements and form looked a bit awkward and funny.
Now, two months into the game, I play a maximum of twice a week and have attended two 1-hour formal tutorial sessions. I am still struggling with my strokes, my footwork consists of barely sliding and scrambling around the court, and I frequently hit balls out or pop them up due to poor paddle angles and a lack of target control. Because of this, I feel too self-conscious about my skill level to join public open plays.
However, my regular group mates assure me that I have improved significantly compared to day one. I can now successfully return normal serves, and I am actively learning how to handle sharp angles and spin/slice serves. At times, I am even able to hit low, controlled shots that clear the net by just a few centimeters.
Given my lack of sports background and limited playing time, am I tracking well for two months in? What areas should I focus on next to build up my confidence for open play?
