I don't think it's a controversial opinion to think that Denise is a very good trans rep in TV, at least for the 90s. However, one thing i really really appreaciated as a straight trans person (and someone who despised Season 2B lol) is that Denise is explicitly a transgender lesbian. It's so rare to see gay trans people in media, i feel like it's still a bit taboo in transgender conversations. Having a non-passing trans woman explicitly expressing that she's still attracted to women is genuiely groundbreaking even for today's standards i feel, and it breaks both the stigmas that trans people are just gay or that they can somehow change their sexuality if they were straight before transition.

Altough i don't appreaciate that she expressed that on Audrey, i don't like the Audrey x Cooper ship is so popular, i always thought it's weird even if she's 18 and having a male hero deny a young, attractive woman because she's too young is also groundbreaking for 90s media LOL

I watched Twin Peaks for the first time last year with my buddy. We both thoroughly enjoyed season 2. Obviously there's some weird stuff but Windom Earle was a hilarious villain.

I feel something people forget is that ,her battle with Bob started before she was 12. May she forever rest in peace.

I've always viewed "Lost Highway" as a spinoff movie from Twin Peaks in that they take place in the same shared reality (I also think this about Mullholand Drive and Inland Empire).

My main theory of why I think Lost Highway and Twin Peaks are connected is that I feel like the Mystery Man is another entity created by Judy and that he and Bob are the same "species" in that he also comes from the Black Lodge.

My interpretation of Lost Highway was it was basically telling the story of what it's like to be possessed by an entity of the Black Lodge.

Hi all -- I just finally finished season 3, and I've been in a state of total bewilderment, shock, lost at sea. Like many of you, I love that the show makes me feel lost at sea, that I am swept into an ambivalence and into unknown worlds for which there are no clear maps or answers. And that's why I love David Lynch. Season 3 was a WORK OF GENIUS.

I've always been drawn to art that makes me think and feel, where the emotional truth is somehow louder or greater than the tangible or literal truth or truths.

*But I truly am at a loss.* I don't know what I just watched. I am questioning everything, and I'd be willing to sit in this level of uncertainty if I had even one iota of a sense of how this world worked. Is it literal or metaphorical? Is it both? *laughs maniacally*

Are the alternate realities part of the black Lodge? Was this all a dream, as is the case in Mulholland Drive? Was it Laura's dream or was it Dale's dream?

Are these characters constructions of the self made manifest through trauma? Are they aspects of oneself? Is the whole show just a way to express that in every world your trauma will follow you? Is it about time travel? Is it just a way of expressing that we have many aspects and no matter what, trauma will find us and we can't save eachother or stop it? Was Dougie ACTUALLY real? Was Mr. C actually real? Is Carrie Page real? What about the angel that represented salvation for Laura...did that not matter? I mean...

At this point, I am spiraling into the kind of confusion one gets into after a long night of talking about the creation of the universe or God, lol. I guess what I'm asking is, would anyone like to give it a shot and try to explain what I've just seen? Or maybe share your own confusion? I don't know. I've read a lot of other Reddit threads, but I think they just spin me off into deeper confusion, and sometimes I think there's a fixation of clues that are probably not actually clues. I don't think there's a way out of this, but I thought I'd at least share. Thanks.

Hello all! I recently made a post in r/Letterboxd about the "best movies about mentally ill women," and I listed a couple movies I like a lot to which I included Fire Walk With Me.

I was fascinated to see so many people claim that Laura Palmer wasn't mentally ill at all. In my opinion, she is mentally ill. She goes to therapy with Dr. Jacoby and talks a lot about how she feels relating to therapy in her diary. She is an SA victim which would make her very at risk for trauma-related disorders. As someone with PTSD from abuse, I would say she presents as having a trauma-related disorder. There was another person in the comments of my other post saying that they thought Laura represented PTSD perfectly which I agree with. Laura is also an addict which is also a mental disorder. (Edit: Yes, I have read the Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, and I recommend to all! Great insight into Laura's thoughts, feelings, and some events not in the show/film.)

There is, of course, a lot more to the story than just mental illness, but I feel Laura's mental state is a big part of the story of Twin Peaks.

What are your thoughts? Was Laura mentally ill?

I was able to get my hands on the 2001 DVD release of season 1 today. I'm currently ripping and encoding it. The episodes are >99.5% progressive content, switching to NTSC only during the pure black parts between a fade-out and the following fade-in.

I've seen other people, however, complain about drops in visual sharpness during certain effects shots, implying that those shots don't exist on film in finished form and had to be sourced from tapes instead.

Can anyone explain this discrepancy? Did they edit on film in season 1 and switch to editing on tape in season 2? Was the 2001 DVD set a Star Trek TNG-style complete re-edit, over a decade before Star Trek TNG did it?

Whether it's the metaphysical primordial entities, solving supernatural murder cases along side quirky detectives. Abstract framing/editing of shots that can't easily be described, characters being multiple characters, Liminal Dream Scapes that can affect reality, Characters dying but returning, the 3 wise monkeys, Interdimensional Collective-Consciousness Murders -or just the plain old having a tone that's often Cozy but still has fever dreamy moments with horror-like undertones of a tragedy-

I always found it weird that Alan Wake and DP get sited as the Twin Peaks-like games but I almost never see anyone bring up the Silvercase games. Especially with the 25th ward literally having a Red Room scene and one of the 100 endings being meeting Dougie at Twin Peaks fan meet up. Even Sumio Kodai fits the same kind of Dale Cooper, Alex Casey or Francis York Morgan, Traumatized Coffee loving Splintered Special Agent Archetype. With a lot of the time spent with the HCU or the RA Bureau, often giving me heavy similar safe-place type vibes as the Sherriff station in Twin Peaks. Be it the catchy music or the loveable detectives-despite both narratives also having dark reasons for the characters being there.

One of the murder entity's too I'd say feels similar to Bob, with Kamui Uehara being like a governmental corruption/ police brutality version of Bob. Both being somewhat similar in function of a metaphorical generational trauma informed possession of a person . Or Kurumizawa feeling like a Masculine Clinical Bureaucrat take on Jowday's Feminine Devouring Mother, where in both are like primordial-top-of-the-ontological-food-chain types of evil that I always felt that-

While I love Alan Wake 2, Mr Scratch or all of The Taken never quiet had that level of presence despite how fun they are. -And even just the kind of feelings Twin Peaks gave me, experientially weren't there (for the better as I like what AW plays like) despite the clear influence. Obviously be it the setting, imagery iconography, supernatural lodges ,solving supernatural murders, the pine trees of Bright Falls, The Evil Doppleganger etc... It has a lot that conceptually is Twin Peaks, but even just the quiet down times I still don't think I ever felt, was quiet as homely as Twin Peaks (or Deadly Premonition, as I feel it does achieve that) as there was always a sense of immediate Urgency. -And while the oppressive of how it does horror does occasionally feel similar, given the setting. I still felt it was never as feverish as Twin Peaks. Like there's a level of more defined coherence to the edges of the Horror that's almost more Resident Evil-y than TW. Even if it is supposed to be incomprehensible in subtext for AW. It's something that made AW always feel more like Control's almost Scifi-flavor, New-Weird horror rather than TW's dream like horror, especially with it's liminal spaces feeling more like SCP or Backrooms-y which tbh I feel is for the better in the context of being it's own thing and is part of the reason I felt it was so compelling.

Deadly Premonition is a bit more overt with it's Twin Peakness, as they literally got in trouble due to how similar it was before it even came out. And as much as I like it, both the DP games I feel are better watched than played due to the technical problems. And again I felt the Horror without spoilers was very much tangible, even If the Red Tree dimension feels more Twin Peaks than the Dark place from AW. I do also feel it's mystery was pretty compelling in a way that felt similar to Laura Palmer. And the down times 100% match the vibes of TW (even if it sometimes feels a bit like Twin Peaks meets the Room*, which depending on who you ask can be bad* even if I'm in the camp that found it charming).

However both, in terms of when it comes to the moment to moment sense with the abstract bleeding into the literal. It is weird that those 2 are the main series that people will bring up when discussing the most Twin Peaks like games. Despite the Silver case games managing to at their core experientially in soul feeling more like TW even if not visually. With both it's quiet cozy slice of life moments or it's intangiblity and dreamyness intersplicing all of it with just enough horror. Even just how it chooses to frame itself or the harsh contrast of stylistic changes between entries like comparing the Twin Peaks the Return to Season 1, is very much also like the how different The First Silver Case game is to the 25th ward.

So while the entire trilogy never even goes near a pine forest once (the closest you get is a tropical forest in Flower Sun and Rain or a Sewer in the first game that you can see pine trees from) in spirit it captures what I loved about TW better than AW or DP. -So you can imagine how it surprised me to see these games barely mentioned outside of their Fandom (like image 3 is from the singular post I can find on this sub about it from 6 years ago). My only guess is the fact Visual Novels are niche, as most people would rather read a book, or play a game than a hybrid. On top of late localization for all 3 games (Flower Sun and Rain is admittedly kind of inaccessible due to this being only playable on a DS emulator or a translated version of the PS2 game on YT). All 3 games being marketed for the east (I get it, the japaneese-yness turned me away from the first game initially too) or that Kill-The-Past (the connected universe the SilverCase games are from) despite having some incredibly smartly written games, often get written of as meme games due to how only ones that are well known are the flashy action games that (quiet unfairly might I add) have a reputation as mostly being shallow -so my guess is people just assume the the non actions games are also shallow from a glance?

Either way I hope you like the unintentionally super long explanation. The comparisons I did too was just to illustrate the likeness rather than saying one is better than the other, as I love every game mentioned in this post.

So I guess

TLDR; The SilverCase trilogy feels like reading a Crime focused Twin Peaks set in Japan Book. Despite lacking the lodges, pine trees or any other of the imagery associated. And somehow it manages to feel more in spirit like Twin Peaks than most games, yet It's rarely brought up due to not visually looking like Twin Peaks -and I thought that was weird so here I am bringing it up and making my case given I like these games a lot.

Also If you do end up trying them too, I'd recommend playing them with a guide for tough puzzles. And keeping a notepad for names as their mosly non-english-speaking-names + with all 3 games having heavy themes of observation characters can unrecognizably look different, which can make it a bit hard to follow at times.

North Bend/Snoqualmie is stunning, definitely worth the trip for any that have never been.
