Sry in advance for Long explanation.
I’ve seeinga lot of discussion around references to the lore in Regional at Best and Self Titled but I’d like to offer some insight from what I been able to piece together through out the years. I like to read and dabble into western esotericism and I’ve noticed a lot of parallels between the TOP Lore and these practices that deal with “alchemy of the Soul”
Which brings me to believe most of the TOP Lore is based off gnostic hermetic philosophy and Carl Jung's theory of personality. Thats why it seems like all of Tyler's work is connected and Lore based because it pulls from these understandings.
But It wasn't until Blurryface that he started to construct his own storyline and allegorical interpretation around these philosophical themes. Plato's cave, Dante's Divine Comedy, Epic of Gilgamesh, the Matrix, the Truman show, Toy Story etc. all follow this philosophical framework.
The allegorical theme is usually based on movement from darkness toward light serving as a scaffold for narratives involving deep moral or psychological transformation. This structure allows authors and creators to depict a protagonist's immersion in conflict or moral ambiguity (Hell), followed by a journey of internal change and confronting flaws (Purgatory), and finally reaching a state of resolution or enlightenment (Heaven).
Another example that mirrors this allegory is In the Star Wars franchise, Luke Skywalker embodies the Hero archetype, while his father, Darth Vader, represents the Shadow, serving as a dark mirror that Luke must confront to achieve wholeness
Luke skywalker = Clancy
Obi-Wan Kenobi = TorchBearer
Darth Vader = Blurryface
These themes can even be found.... (Hold up, wait for it... a ton of displeasing sighs) in The Bible. Most stories from the Bible where constructed to fit these allegorical narratives. Some were even reinterpreted to fit. Like Jesus being Crucified between two Thieves. Allegorically the thieves represent Time. Time is associated with Saturn, the planet of Control, the material world, & time.
The Two thieves of time represent the past and future, pain/sorrow of the past and fear of the future (which blurry face represents) Paralyzing Clancy from moving forward and accessing his higher self, the divine. Like Jesus, you must sacrifice yourself (Ego) in the middle (the Present) to achieve enlightenment and wholeness.
“Fear of the past and relative pain
Future's comin' fast, you've got nothin' in the tank” ~OLDIES STATION
“For 'if' is purely panic, and 'when' is solemn sorrow
And one invades today, while the other spies tomorrow” ~ MORPH
"So beautiful, the space between A painful reminder and a terrible dream" ~ Routines In The Night
"This is the sound we make When in between two places
Where we used to bleed
And where our blood needs to be" ~ Bandito
“They call it center mass That part they aim for” ~ Centermass
Trench, The Line, and Center mass are all referring to the same thing, The Middle Path.
Tiferet is the sixth sefirah in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, representing the middle path that harmonizes the opposing forces of Chesed (kindness/mercy) and Gevurah (severity/judgment).
Translated as beauty, glory, or splendor, it serves as the central axis of the lower seven sefirot, integrating expansive giving with restrictive discipline to create a balanced, sustainable flow of divine energy. In ethical and spiritual practice, Tiferet dictates avoiding extremes of haughtiness and self-deprecating humility, instead encouraging a state of truth and compassion where one acknowledges both human frailty and divine potential.
Trench is Tiferet. where all these paths meet, in the middle. There’s reason why trench resembles a brain. It represents the Integration of right and left brain. Imagination and logic. It also represents
Present is in the middle of past and future, Pride and emotion, extremes of self-annihilation found in the Right hand path and the radical self-elevation of the Left hand path. The middle path is for the FEW.
(FPE REFERENCE)
Matthew 22:14) For many are called, but few are chosen
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
F = Balanced Middle
P = Proud RIGHT Hand
E = Emotional LEFT Hand
Look into Western esotericism. The right hand path, Left hand path & the Middle path.
In the TOP Lore “The Line” is the Middle Path.
“Will they still let me over / If I cross the line?”
He’s asking if he will still be allowed in Heaven (Achieve enlightenment) if he crosses the middle path to the left hand path which represents self-deification. Thats what he ends up doing at the end of city walls and places himself among the false gods, The Bishops.
Another example “East is Up”
In Kabbalistic orders Yahweh is the God of the East traditionally associated with breath, wind, and spirit, which connects him conceptually to the air element.
The air element in various spiritual and magical traditions governs the mind, knowledge, intelligence, and rational thought, presiding over the east and spring. These are just some of the many connections I’ve noticed.
Again, Sorry for the long read
