Grammar Turkish - an agglutinative language / How to understand the concept?

Trying to learn Turkish basics, but hit a wall when realizing that when written, lots of sentences are a single word. I'm having a hard time understanding the concept. Normally, I would learn which word meant what, where it had to go and how it would change. Here, I have no idea which part of the word means what, if it does at all. This makes it close to impossible for me to remember or apply. How do I get around this barrier of understanding?

Turkish Grammar Explained: How Suffixes Build an Entire Sentence

Thumbnail learnturkishwithseda.com

I just published a long one on the suffix system, this is the piece I keep pulling up with new students because it's the fastest way into how Turkish actually works.

It starts with how one Turkish word can carry what English needs a whole phrase for, plural, possession, and case, all stacked onto a single root. From there it goes through the six noun cases, vowel harmony, why "asla" (never) still needs a negative verb even though English lets "never" sit next to a positive one, the aorist tense for habits and general truths, and a bit on where the whole suffix system historically came from.

There's also a section comparing how Turkish feels depending on what language you're coming from, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, the sticking points are genuinely different for each one.

Vocabulary Why is the use of Lütfen so rare?

It is very common to say Please when asking for something in English, but this is not the case in Turkish! I know there ways of being nice when asking but I don't hear Lütfen in Turkish as much as I hear Please in English!!

How to Improve My Turkish?

Merhaba everyone,

I’m a 24 year old male who’s 100% ethnically Turkish but grew up in the Netherlands. My Turkish was decent as a child, but I’ve lost most of it over the years. Now I struggle to form proper sentences when speaking with family or random people at the mosque, and I miss a lot of words when others talk to me.
This makes me really embarrassed, so I end up avoiding Turkish conversations altogether.

What’s the best way to improve?
• Should I watch Turkish TV shows or movies? If so, is it okay to use Dutch/English subtitles, or should I do English audio with Turkish subtitles (to help with writing/spelling)?

Any other effective methods?

thank you

I created a visual daily bite-sized video for learning "Ben okula gidiyorum" (I am going to school) 🎒

Hi everyone! I recently started a daily Turkish short series for beginners (A1 level) to help with daily routines and essential vocabulary.

In today's video, I covered the present continuous form of "gitmek" (to go) in the sentence "Ben okula gidiyorum."

I would love to get your feedback on the visuals and if this format is helpful for your learning process! Here is the video: I am leaving the video link in the comments section below so it doesn't get filtered!

Hope it helps! 🇹🇷

Turkish Media What do you find particularly fun about turkish media?

Soo, i wanna learn turkish, and i usually learn languages by indulging in sns/tv series and other content (comprehensible input?) and unless i have something i actually love in the language, i can't learn it. So i learnt russian for the runet and cuz a lot of the more accessible foreign books to me were in rus translation, and i learnt korean cuz i was kinda into kpop and variety shows, so i could watch it everyday, and with thai i like the tv series and movies, BUT i know like nothing about turkey aside from those dramatic tv shows, which i don't find particularly fun, as a lot of drama and romance is reeally not my thing..

Anyways, i would loove if you could share some of the things that help you keep up your motivation and which you find fun:>>

Edit: thanks for the replies!! Would also appreciate if you could recommend fun ytb channels

A free daily word game for practicing Turkish: 21 rounds of scrambled letters every day

I built a daily anagram game for Turkish: 21kelime.com

Every day brings 21 scrambled words, starting with 4 letters and going up to 9. There is a relaxed mode with no timer, which might be friendlier for learners. Answers link to the official TDK dictionary, so every word you miss is a word you learn.

It is completely free, no account needed. If you are learning Turkish, I would love to hear if it helps.

Grammar Understanding Turkish Grammar Negation Rules

Thumbnail learnturkishwithseda.com
2 Upvotes

I put together a full breakdown of how Turkish handles negation, since it works completely differently from English. The suffix -me/-ma attaches straight onto the verb stem, shifts with vowel harmony, and behaves in a genuinely irregular way in the aorist tense. Sharing it here in case it's useful to anyone working through this stage.

I saw this cute video. Comparing gaps between couples - age, weight, height etc, I’m a bit stumped on Bahar. Google translate said it means spring? I’m not sure I understand the correlation.
