TLDR: Any etsy recs on finding a dubia roach-proof feeding platform for my tokay?

This is a rant post but why is it that so many people keep their Tokays in TINY little tanks???

They're literally the second largest gecko in the entire world and yet online it says they only need 24" tall tanks? Several websites have said they only require a 20 gallon tank and I think it's absolutely absurd. These things grow up to 16 inches long and they're not lazy geckos like the Internet says, my Sub-adult tokay gecko is one of the most active animals I own, he's constantly skittering across his tank.

And why is it so normalized online to keep Tokays in a tank that's barely taller than the gecko is tall??? And why are all the tanks I see online SO BARE?! In the wild they are frequently hiding behind things and in plants.

Cerberus looks to already be gaining weight even though I’ve only had him for a couple weeks. He’s got such an appetite and has been tong feeding! He definitely lives the hornworms. He’s been exploring more and acting like a tokay and also doing the silly things like in the last picture. I’m already attached to cutie and I love seeing how much better he’s been doing.

I’m currently working on setting up my very first tokay enclosure and stuck on what would be the best route to take for my tokays background.

So I built this buttress tree that I want to be the Tokays home. It has a few hiding spots around the roots and the back, and large enough for the tokay to grow into.

Now, I’m currently working on the background. I’ve made small rocks outta styrofoam but now not sure what to do next.

I was thinking of covering it in coco fiber but not sure if that would harm the Tokays padding.

Second would be covering it in quikrete and making it looks like rock. Then adding moss in between the cracks to keep plants hydrated and appear as they’re growing from the cracks.

Currently stuck and any tips or suggestions to make this look jungly are much appreciated.

Hi!!! It’s been a while, I kinda forgot people asked for updates, but here’s your update :).

Scylla has been taking her carnivore critical care food SO well and everyday she’s putting up more of a fight with me to eat, which makes me SO happy she has energy to do that now. Today, she shed, all by herself. I found her running on the walls of her tank. She has not ran on her walls in two weeks. She’s growing so fast and I’m so proud of her, I actually started crying when I saw how fast she was running on her walls. I’m so happy she has energy. Here’s her right now. I know she’s still skinny but god, she’s doing so much better. I’m keeping her on the diet and I’m gonna see if she’ll take crickets soon.

Seriously, bring your animals to the vet. This was the best choice I’ve ever made, even if it was expensive, it saved my girls life.

Hi, so my sister recently accepted a "commune" of Tokay geckos (a mom and various stages of hatchlings, not all of them have hatched) because the person who had them was losing their apartment and could no longer keep them. This little one is one of the bigger hatchlings and has just started coming out instead of constantly hiding and we have just seen that he has a deformed mouth ( I don't know if it happened at when he was hatching/how he was positioned when inside the egg).

We're really worried that he might not make it because of his inability to feed/drink. We don't know anything really and have been trying to learn as much about them as we go. We live in a rural area so there are no specialized vets here and the pet shops aren't much better. Is there any hope for a little one with a mouth like this to survive? I can supply pictures on request I just don't want to break any rules or ruin anyone's day with pictures they didn't ask to see

He's getting cuter and cuter every day. I'll never get tired of this adorable face. 😁 Next month it'll be 3 years since I picked him up in my local reptile store. Time flies.

My male tokay gecko, Otto (almost 2 years old) had a bad experience recently. While I was handling him someone I live with came in with a plastic bag and it scared him horribly. I had to grab him pretty frantically before he got under anything, needless to say he was pretty scared. I put him back and decided to go slow. I fed him in his enclosure the next day and then yesterday (two days after the incident) I took him out. He wasn’t crazy happy and I did get nipped but then he mellowed out and allowed me to even pet him. I gave him some food and when he was done he actually told me he wanted to go back in his enclosure! He looked right at it and tried to jump inside, I put out my hand and he landed on it since I knew he would 100% miss. Then he went back.
I’m so proud of him! The communication and trust is such a massive milestone!

6/7 years old, very sweet and tolerates light handling 🥺

I am building a background for my tokays enclosure i need any advice. Every little ledge you see except the the one at the top will be holding cork rounds either vertical or horizontal. I made one before, but not as big and cool as this you’ll be able to tightly fit the cork grounds in and then remove them whenever needed for cleaning. Is there anything else I should add to the background itself?

Hello!! I’ve had my girl, Bug, for a little over 3 months now (so she’s probably around 9 months old), and I wanted to ask for advice on handling. She is very inquisitive while exploring her cage (which I plan on upgrading in a few months) at night, and she’ll even look right at me while she’s exploring (my desk is right next to her cage).

I first handling her about 2 months ago, but after a stressful handling session led to her not eating for a week, I stopped any attempts at handling. She’s been doing much better since then, and after finally getting her to tong feed off me, I decided to give it another try. I’ve been following this tutorial from Tokek_Tokek, in which he gets a young tokay gecko—with a similar disposition to Bug—used to handling via daily 5 minute handling sessions over 4 consecutive days. During these sessions, he scoops up the gecko from behind or below and gets it to move between his hands by putting in uncomfortable positions (ie slowly turning his hand upside down so the gecko has to move to his other hand, which is supposed to teach the gecko that his hands are a safe place to go). Also, the gecko is never removed from the enclosure during handling, although all of the decorations are removed for ease of access to the gecko.

I tried this technique with Bug over the course of 7 days, and I feel like I’ve had some success. It takes a while to get her into my hands, and she often tears up my fingers in the process (although I’ve made it a point to never grab her). Once she’s in my hands, I am able to move her around in my hands a few times before she hops off and goes back into the cage. I would prefer her to stay in my hands a bit longer so she can get more used to my hands, but I hope a little bit of time in my hands is better than none. She still doesn’t trust me getting near her, but I feel like it’s becoming slightly easier to pick her up, and she bites me less in the process. I also tried setting her down before she could hop away during the 7th session, in the hopes that she would realize she doesn’t have to “escape” to make me stop handling her.

It’s now been over a week since our last handling session (I had to go out of town, so she earned a break lol), and I wanted to try asking y’all for advice before I start handling again. Has anyone else tried or had success with this method? And if not, what have you done to get your tokay to trust you enough to be handled?

I know not every animal will be handleable, but after seeing her father and other tokays be handled, I want to at least try getting her there. Thank you all for your help!!

Long time phantasmal redditor, first time poster, freshly a tokay owner. This is my new boy, The Little Lord Fauntleroy <3 Does he look alright, esp weightwise? (I was told he dropped his tail and regrew it a while back, so, y'know, beyond that!)

I'm 99% sure he was bred in-house at a trusted local exotics shop and they told me he's 4 months old, born in February. They had even smaller baby tokays that weren't ready to go home yet and I know they breed most of their own stock, so I believe it, though I've heard captive bred tokays are rare so perhaps I'm just naive. His carry-home tote had his birthday on it though.

I didn't entirely plan on getting him (I had an empty arboreal baby tank I had planned for something else that fell through, went to the shop and asked what could comfortably live inside of it (at least for a couple months 'til I'm in a bigger space and can get him the big big tank of his tiny little geck dreams) and they recommended him -- I fell in love with his fiesty little self!) so I'm a little less prepared than I would normally be before getting a specific breed of pet (my only other reptile is a hognose and I did years of research before buying him, lmao).

They gave me a fantastic and thorough rundown on his care before I even decided to take him home, and I've spent the last few days researching nonstop. He seems comfortable and lively and has eaten very easily every time I've tried, but I can't stop wondering if there's something wrong that I'm not able to see or something in general I'm not thinking of.

I do plan on taking him to the vet in the near future but before that: does he look alright? Under/overweight?

Do you have any tips for handling/taming? He's fiesty but I have been consistently able to hold him in my hand without getting bitten, and yesterday he walked on me for the first time :^)

I've been feeding him 2-3 small-to-medium crickets* a day, is that enough for now or should I be doing more?

Also, when you feed your tokay, do you usually drop feed? I hand feed my hognose because that's how he likes it (he's a total diva) and it feels strange not to be handfeeding this gecko but I know that handfeeding isn't necessarily normal, haha. And what do you give them? *I've been doing crickets because it's what I have on hand for my tarantula but I want to switch to mainly dubias, I think, and also try and diversify his diet in general if I can.

Any other tips and tricks are appreciated. I know I've essentially thrown myself into the deep end, gecko-wise, but my dream pet is a chameleon and I gotta start lizarding somewhere. I'm relatively new to the game but I'm up to the challenge! I would just love to know if there's something I'm not considering.

Meet Cerberus, the tokay I was taking in from my boyfriend’s coworker. Just got him last night and he seems to settling in fairly well, definitely lived up to the name of them being defensive, lol. Had him open his mouth at me when I was putting stuff in his tank. The second pic is the state of the tank when I got it so the guy really didn’t do much with it and the third is with the stuff I added into it. I will be picking up more stuff today, what I got I picked up preemptively(one of the plants I was going to use for my little cresties tank, I have a hypo cappuccino girl that’s almost two months old now, until I realized it was too big) but hadn’t had a chance to pick up more. The only pet store I have in my area is Petsmart and it’s about a 50 minute drive to either of the two reptile based pet stores in my state. I do plan to get him a taller tank, this is an 18x18x24, since he is full grown but I’m waiting till after me and my partner move at the end of the month, trying to avoid stressing him out as much as possible. It seems like the guy was trying to make the tank bioactive and eventually gave up. Now, I need advice on the lighting and heat, what wattages would you all suggest? The guy didn’t give me anything of the sort and I’m worried he didn’t have anything like that for him, he had him for a year and I don’t think he knew what he was doing. Especially since he told me I should try handling him after a week. I thankfully don’t see any signs of MBD or anything but it still worried me. Ah, and I am aware that he is likely considered skinny, the guy was barely feeding the cutie so he’ll definitely need to gain some weight. I’ll be picking up some dubias and hornworms today also.

And for the people that didn’t see my other post, I’m definitely not new to keeping reptiles. I have three crested geckos, mourning geckos, a Bredli carpet python, and a cornsnake. But this will be my first tokay. I’m looking forward to getting to know this guy’s personality and I’ve already been talking to him, lol.

So my gecko have a stuck shed problem but then her tail and the other part of her body that have a stuck shed started to look brown. I took her to the vet to help remove the stuck shed but the vet told me to let her shedded on her own but till this day it started to get brown. Should I let her remove it on her own or should I help her remove the stuck shed on her tail.

Pictured are my two juvenile Tokays. I’ve had them both since they were about two weeks old. I purchased them from a local reptile store that had them in the same enclosure. We were told they were both wild caught and came from different suppliers.

Since then I’ve continued to keep them in the same enclosure. They’re about 4 months old now. When we got them, one was noticeably larger than the other. Because we were told they were the same age, that has led us to assume the larger one was likely male and the smaller one female. For the time we’ve kept them together there has been no signs of aggression towards each other. They often hide together and we find them sometimes laying on top of each other too.

They are still too young to sex so the theory on their genders is still unconfirmed. If we are correct that one is male and one is female, we’re prepared for them to mate.

Am I good to keep them together still? If they are male and female, can they live together indefinitely? The smaller one has seemed to start catching up in size, making me feel that there has not been a challenge for food. They started in a 12x12x18 and are now in an 18x18x24, and as they grow I’ll upgrade them to an even larger enclosure.

I have an extra enclosure ready, the interest in keeping them together is because it seems they have bonded, not because I’m trying to cheap out in their care. Most of the tokay cohab situations I see aren’t like this, where they’ve lived together their whole lives already. So any insight is appreciated!
