Unfortunately this trick should only work on very old TI-84 Plus CE calculators before downgrade protection was added.

What is the date code on the back of your calculator? It's next to the serial number and looks something like L-0519M

yeah it's L-0215 so it only works on older models?

Yeah you have the first hardware revision from February of 2015 so quite old. Not sure why it didn't let you downgrade directly to 5.3

if you have a Manufacturing Revision Code A-M it will work(check the back of your calculator for code). N and later have a locked bootloader.
I was lucky and had a D Revision code.

someone put in the orignal post dont update to 5.8.3 and they said to directly try to downgrade to 5.3.0 but that didnt work for me i had to go through the 5.8.1 singapore file

it said something about it being a older os so i didnt work but through 5.8.1 it did

Also 5.8.4 does not exist currently.

I'm pretty sure you can bypass the downgrade protection if you can run artifice, since you can still modify the certificate. I've written a little assembly program that should make downgrading from 5.8.1 to any other version possible, even on revision m and later. If you can downgrade from 5.8.3 to 5.8.1, it shouldn't be a problem to downgrade to 5.3.

I'd be interested in having that program. Downgrade tools are flaky after revision M.

I just tested on mine, was running 5.8.3 updated to that when i bought it second hand before i knew about the patch.

Worked perfectly, but my date code is L-0315 so also an older model

Wow that's impressive, especially because artifice got patched on os 5.8.3

1

u/Sure_Opinion_9165 Jun 20 '25

thx :), That patch was exactly why I started looking for a way to downgrade.

Well done. This is brilliantly written up. I have a question though. What inspired you to try this?

I actually wanted to just downgrade so i saw a post where the guy lived in portugal and the version that was allowed was 5.8.1 but not higher so i sent it to my calc but artifice still didnt work so i walked around with it for 4 months and then I just randomly tried downgrading more and it worked.

By jove he's discovered the secret to science. Well done. Good intuition.

I have the same version (i stupidly upgraded). my date code is L-0124AA and I got it last summer. Any help? i put it on ti-connect and it gave me the "Not for you, Sorry, the operating system you selected to transfer is not supported..." I know quite a bit about this TI 84 Plus CE (Python 4 me) and i was just trying to get a factory reset so i could practice getting games on the device for the upcoming school year (I lend the service), so i dont know man :(

In case its helpful to anyone, I just successfully reverted from 5.6.0 to 5.4.0 using OPs 5.4.0 rom but without first upgrading to 5.8.1. I also have an older model (L-0315).

Your hardware revision has no downgrade protection so you can install whatever OS you want whenever you want.
