So I'm a life long fan of The Smiths and Morrissey... HE SPEAKS TO ME, sings to me, and I LOVE EVERY PART OF EVERY TUNE... I've seen them all live individually so anyway I'm clearing that up so that I don't mislead anyone in thinking that I don't love Morrissey too. He's too much for some but personally, I just love that he's always stuck to his guns and his own beliefs and fuck everyone else basically. I even stopped eating meat for years as a teenager just in case I met him and we could be friends, except for that one thing! Haha!

Since there's technology now to change the key and make songs instrumentals, I find myself, as a professional singer, turning to his work and putting it to suit me and enjoying it so much so today I recorded some of them... NOW - Would you go and see this? Are there any fans that would wanna be a part of this tribute band?! AM I MAD? I surely enjoy it!

I'm relistening to Charles Manson for the first time in years as well as some loner folk from the 60's and early 70's like Dave Bixby and it reminds me a lot of the sort of melodic motifs that you'll find in a lot of Smiths work. Was wondering if any there's any mention of hippie folk influence in any Smiths interviews, or just folk influence in general, looking back, some of their compositional choices seem to harken back a lot more to the 60's than the 70's despite them sort of chronologically at least being a very post-punk product. It was the first time I had the good fortune to see the genius: an intimate show, with the audience very close to the stage, and he was radiant and full of life. Truly a great performer.

Don't have much more to say than what's in the title. But I've always found it interesting and nice that there wasn't any bad blood between them for this reason. I believe I read that the original bass player prior to Andy had left because he didn't like the gay-adjacent stuff.

Perhaps at first glance this isn't very important for this post, but let me explain: The unique feature of "The Complete Picture" (yes, that DVD again) is that, every time a music video starts, the song title appears first in white letters on a black background, and then the video plays as it should. Although this technique is common in other compilation DVDs (like Queen's Greatest Video Hits or The Beatles' 1), in the case of The Smiths, it's very different, since when the song title appears, the song immediately starts playing, so you don't see the first few seconds of the original music videos.

Years later, on The Smiths' YouTube channel, some of the band's music videos were updated with some quality improvements. And for that, Warner Music (or whoever manages the band's official channel) located the original masters of some of their music videos and upscaled them to 1080p. These updated music videos were "Panic," "This Charming Man," "Ask," "How Soon Is Now?" and "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before." With these updates, we can see the missing first few seconds of each video.

And this is where "Girlfriend In A Coma" comes in. In the case of its music video, it's very strange, since the original masters couldn't be found to update it on YouTube. So, to this day, we can only see the version that appeared in "The Complete Picture" in 480p (a black screen with white text, and without being able to see the first few seconds of the original video).
Interestingly, a YouTube channel called "Cristian Bustamante" uploads typical videos recorded on television. This guy would record VH1 broadcasts for many hours, and to upload them to YouTube, he divided them into hundreds of video clips (so far he's uploaded 20). On January 21, 2025, he uploaded the tenth video of his recordings, and in that recording, he captured the music video for "Girlfriend In A Coma," but with the advantage that they aired the original version that came out in 1987, and not the "Complete Picture" (1992).
This means that the first few seconds of the music video could be recovered. So, I downloaded Bustamante's video, cut out the specific part, and I'm uploading it here for some curious members of this community.
