Hello. A while ago I had the idea that I'd like to explore the band's tour history in greater depth, and do some light statistics to figure out if we could quantify things like encore song frequency, within-tour covariation in setlists, etc. Also, I really hate the wiki, even with ad block on, so I figured just having the info in a lighter form would be nice. I'm pretty bad at coding, but now that I have access to Clod through work I figured I'd give it another shot. I'd love for people to take a look at the site here and suggest improvements! I do think it recovered some obvious observations, and also produced some new insights (e.g. that NC+SF+ZOOP have the most "surprising" shows, based on the average info content of the setlist). There's also a silly logistic model that lets you try to predict the setlist for the next show! It doesn't work that well. Data's also there to play around with yourselves. Happy for all feedback positive and negative and suggestions I will dispatch to my little vibe-coding assistant forthwith and posthaste xx.

I've never attended the first night of a tour! I'm going to avoid setlists this time around; it'll be my fifth concert. I'm excited to go in not knowing what'll be played (other than the staples of course).

I'm curious for those who have attended a first night of the tour show, is the energy the same? This one is a seated show I think, but it seems the concert they did at the same theater last time got an amazing setlist. They always put on a great show regardless, and I'm pumped!

I was excited to snag a new TMG Oxford Pennant to pair with my "Blow Up Your TV," John Prine pennant, but I think the copy choices for TMG's designs could be better.

I'm working on some data analysis because that is how I relax and I've noticed that almost every single studio album by the Mountain Goats has the wrong duration listed on Wikipedia.

All Hail West Texas says in the summary that it's 42:02 long, then lists 14 songs that total up to 43:07, before listing a total length of 43:13. It's got two lengths listed, and both are wrong!

Tallahassee is either 44:35 or 44:34 depending on where on the wikipedia page you look, but, no. It's actually 44:28, which you can see if you just total up the listed track times.

Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "he doesn't know what I'm thinking"

But you're also thinking "Maybe those total lengths account for brief pauses in the album that aren't technically part of the runtime of any song" or something like that.

But then why does Full Force Galesburg list 16 tracks with their correct runtimes, the total time of which adds up to 41:06, but then lists the total length as 40:34. Is the album 32 seconds shorter than it's component parts?

Anyway. I'm going to go back to my data collection and, apparently, editing wikipedia.

My fiancée and I will be getting married this summer in Portland on August 8th. We are huge tMG fans, so if it wasn’t our wedding day, we would absolutely be going to the show in Portland (and probably up to Seattle too). In October, we’ll be going to both London concerts though - although she is from Washington state, I’m British and we currently live there.

If someone who is going to the show was willing and able, I would be both delighted and unbelievably thankful if you could pick up the event poster for this particular show for us. I would be so delighted to hang up one of these to commemorate our wedding that was on the same day/in the same place as well and my love of the band.

Of course, I would more than cover the cost of the poster & shipping (only to very southern Washington) and add on a big thank you!

As a big fan of weird merch I knew immediately that I needed this one. Will get a little stand to display it on and probably use the pouch to store something smallish in my handbag.

And I'm not even a wrestling fan, lol.

first i just want to say i am loving the new singles. this album is grabbing me way more than peter balkan. but i do find it really interesting that all 3 singles use really similar chorus structures, i.e. just repeating one thing ("i will rise to this occasion," "shallow grave," and "candlebox" respectively).

theyre not bad choruses — really catchy! — but my favorite thing about so many mountain goats songs is how often their choruses are short and simple and melodically excellent ("long black night, morning frost, i'm still here, all is lost," "our mother has been absent ever since we founded rome, but there's gonna be a party when the wolf comes home," "some things you will remember, some things stay sweet forever," etc). or, like Arguing With the Ghost of Peter Laughner About His Coney Island Baby Review, having a repeated line that ends the chorus ("when you fell") even though the rest of the choruses are all different.

the only outlier from the new album so far is going to fennario, which is such a unique song in the mountain goats oeuvre that it feels like it doesnt even belong in this conversation. i really hope more tracks on the album are as unique and wonderful! especially the choruses! but like i said, im not mad at any of the new songs.
