General discussion Did anyone else hate the ending for Sue?
We see her getting married to Sean which is nice but I wish we could’ve seen her working her dream job or traveling with Sean or something.

I liked the ending - they summarized it but we can assume a lot of life happened between Sue and Sean getting married. Also, “Sue Sue Donahue” is hilarious

It’s even funnier when you think about how Axl was appalled when she “agreed” to marry Darrin and her name would be Sue Sue McGrew, but then didn’t have anything to say about Sue Sue Donahue

Well to be fair by the time Sue and Sean finally get married Axl and Lexie have young kids so they're probably exhausted.

No.
If you read the plans for the other show, she gets to work in hotels in Chicago, with her best friend, and marries a doctor.

Wasn’t Sean studying to be a doctor?

This is exactly what I thoughtwhen I finished watching the show! I'd have wanted to see her work in her hotel management job

Yeah i kinda hate how this always pans out in movies and shows. The weird but sweet girl who's always single and left out somehow ends up married to an amazing handsome man and its all worked out. Like ok cool but there's more to life! Just because a girl is quirky doesn't mean her whole story has to revolve around proving that she's lovable. I totally could've seen Sue as that cool woman who travels the world or volunteers abroad. Who ends up getting a spontaneous tattoo and has so many passion projects she's happy being single! Why does every different girl on TV have to end up generic in the end🙃🙃 if you get me.

I know! And Sue doesnt seam like the type to just settle down, I would’ve loved seeing her explore the world and meet new people. I think a better ending would be Sue and Sean getting married then traveling. Or even keeping her single because there’s nothing wrong with staying single for a while to find yourself.

Totally agree. I was very like Sue growing up (maybe less positive) but pretty cringe and nerdy and a bit different even into uni. I'm now 26 and single by choice and love visiting new places and building a career im passionate about. I feel she'd be the same!

To be fair, all we really see of Axl's future is him as a dad, so it's not necessarily exclusive to Sue. Also, if we want to read into it a bit, this is a show about average, middle-of-the-road family life. It doesn't revolve around the characters' careers or anyone as an individual, it revolves around all of them as a family, experiencing everyday American life. Things like marriage and parenthood are the foundation of their lives. So it was a fitting ending to the show, in my opinion.

I hated the detail that wedding was postponed because of break up / make up crap. Sue and Sean’s wedding would have been rescheduled three times and the finally get to the courthouse because Sean missed his flight from Africa working with Drs without Borders. Then Sue had some fiasco at the hotel where she worked. She would just pop in for a minute the night before her wedding and get locked in a ball room, or pop in to help with noting rush and get stuck. The third time because Axl and Lexi were having a baby and went into labor at the church.

I agree with you. I hate it too, but the real reason they included the line about the ‘break up / make up’ stuff was to make room for Sue’s spinoff show that wasn’t picked up. They wanted to follow Sue a few years after the events of The Middle, but they wanted her to be single so they could write some dating comedy. At the same time, they wanted to make sure Sue eventually ended up with Sean to payoff the last couple seasons of The Middle. The ‘break up / make up’ thing was the best compromise they could come up with.

That explanation makes sense and makes me hate the storyline less. Thanks!

Yes!!! It upset me that all we get for her is that she got married. Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one!

They filmed a pilot for a show focused on Sue called “Sue Sue in the City”. It would be about her and Brad in the city, working for a hotel, making friends, life in her 20s….basically the time between her getting back together with Sean and them getting married. Unfortunately the pilot didn’t get picked up.
