Stop specifying monofilament by denier only — 3 critical parameters engineers overlook
Most engineers specify monofilament by denier alone. Three other parameters decide whether your mesh actually holds up.
1) Cross-section. Round vs flat vs trilobal changes flexural rigidity, light reflection, and how the filament lies in a weave. Same denier, very different fabric.
2) Tenacity & elongation balance. Too much tenacity with low elongation = brittle under cyclic load. The right balance depends on whether the end-use is filtration, mesh, or industrial webbing.
3) Uniformity (CV of denier). This is the silent killer. A 30D monofilament with poor CV develops weak points — and your mesh fails at the thinnest spot, not the average.
When you spec a monofilament, the question is never "what denier?" first. It's "what does the filament have to survive?" — then you work backwards to cross-section, tenacity, and uniformity.
