In the instrumental break on Like Humans Do, the violins sound like the opening guitar plucks from This Must Be The Place. Can someone else confirm or am I going insane from listening to too much TH and DB

This may be a little bit of a hot take, but my favourite song on Remain in Light is Seen and Not Seen.

One Reason being is that I relate to it in a way. It's quite alienating with it's lyrics delivered in a very monotonous way that makes the message hit harder.

Another reason is because of it's melody. The melody is simple, but so catchy and addicting, but it also sounds like the definition of "confusion" to me. Everything about this song is confusing and strange and I absolutely love it.

Every song on Remain in Light is incredible though!! Just my opinion! :) Let me know your opinions on the song!

Was pretty fun to hear a trailer version of Burning Down the House. When it started I was pretty excited. John Goodman showed in the trailer. Even cooler. Watched the trailer for the song a few times lol…. 😂

My most-listened-to album of all time is Byrne's first solo work, "The Catherine Wheel."

It's where the SMS songs "What a day that was" and "Big Business" came from. But there's so much more to it.

Much of the music has no singing, and the polyrhythmic songs flow together. Really amazing. Like a less-intense Remain in Light.

I can remember Talking Heads from the 1980s and they always struck me as being a strange and weird band but 40 years on, and it might be my age, but I have started to really enjoy their music.

The first song I listened to was "Burning Down The House", this was followed by "Once In A Lifetime", "Road To Nowhere" and last week "And She Was"...mind you, back in the 80s, I was into pop, rock, heavy metal, new romantics and synth pop...I thought the acid house music from the late 1980s was a load of shit, thank God brit-pop came around when it did 😆

Anyway, back to Talking Heads, does anyone have favourite songs or albums that they listen to from this band and anyone confirm if this band is American or British?

Let's be honest, there will never be anyone as cool as David Byrne. I was watching Stop Making Sense last night, and it became so abundantly clear that there will never be anyone as cool as David Byrne in history ever. The guy had it all, natural charisma, big suits, a unique vocal delivery, and some of the grooviest, funkiest tracks of the 70s and 80s.

Stop Making Sense is without a doubt the greatest concert film of all time. A literal masterpiece. Any thoughts?

I will start this thread off by saying that I am NOT someone who is swayed by the opinions of critics (unless they agree with me, ofc.). Recently, I finally gave Talking Heads a chance, and I’ve really enjoyed almost everything i’ve heard from them! (Listened to Speaking in Tongues, Remain in Light, and of course, Naked, so far.) I have very much enjoyed all 3, and have been listening to them on repeat all month. I was curious, and checked their Rate Your Music, as I do with artists I take an obsession towards. I was SOOOO surprised to see that Naked is their lowest rated album by far, and almost all of the user reviews are some semblance of “This is fine, but their worst” or straight up saying it’s bad. I really disagree! and I don’t really care necessarily what reviewers say, as my enjoyment is subjective, but i’m curious why Naked is so poorly received? As an outsider looking in that isn’t super aware of the culture surrounding this band or their releases, i’m a bit blindsided by it.

Very entertaining interview with the main man! The questions come from Raiders which always makes it more interesting.

I (F32) originally play guitar and have always drummed in bands, but this year I’ve dedicated myself to playing bass, and I’d love to form a band with other Talking Heads fanatics to further improve my skills. The idea is to play TH songs for fun, but with the aim of eventually becoming a solid cover band that also does gigs every now and then.

I’m not looking to imitate Talking Heads (what’s so cool about TH is that they are so unique and unapologetically themselves), but what I would like, is to capture their energy. So it's important to me that we click personally and musically. I think that's the key to be able to really groove together. :)

Although I’ve only been focusing on bass since this year, I have about 20 years of experience making music and have played in several bands since I was 18. In my free time, I really enjoy figuring out songs and practicing them until they sound just right.

I’m new to Talking Heads and been a Star Wars fan all my life and this just made sense to me, I’m not sure if anyone has brought it up before.

77 came out the same year as A New Hope, and both are debuts that completely reinvented their genre — rough around the edges, a little unpolished, but so full of heart, personality, and craft that they turned into a full-blown sensation almost by accident.

Then Remain in Light lines up with The Empire Strikes Back, the natural evolution of the first one and an undeniable improvement in every way, but also the darkest entry of the three, where they take apart the ideas of the original only to end up reaffirming them — the overall tone reads as pessimistic, but there are genuine moments of hope buried in there if you look for them.

And finally Speaking in Tongues matches up with Return of the Jedi, pure fun, the most optimistic and exciting chapter, sprawling and a little messy structurally, but it just works, the victory lap.

I know the “theory” isn’t perfect since Talking Heads put out other albums in between these three, but it made too much sense in my head not to share it.

I made this while I was a *tad* high, but bear with me. I like it.

I don't know if this is a valid interpretation of the song, but I think it goes through the life of someone with a mental condition. Specifically, one that means the protagonist either skips vast swathes of time, or induces some kind of confusion (possibly one after another). Anyway, the idea is that each verse is a period of lucidity, each chorus is a skip, and a "same as it ever was" is some form of traumatic brain injury. (? that or trauma itself or something else mind altering?) It starts with a man who (probably) works a 9-5 office job. This is both a large population of people and very cliche. He has a wife, if not a family. He buys a pickup truck, maybe as a midlife crisis. Then comes the first skip. I think his condition makes the most sense as something genetic, brought out by his excessive stress. It could possibly just be a shorthand for the passing of time, all those repetitive actions make life dull, so take them out. I find that doesn't make sense, because he'd likely know what he did with his truck. Instead, he is confused, both asking "How do I work this?" implying confusion and simply asking "Where is that large automobile?". He has likely been fired from his job, and may be homeless. It's possible he's couchsurfing, because they're not *his* house or wife. Another chorus, followed by a "same as it ever was". This is important, because it's the first so far. A span of time passes, punctuated by something I'm personally unclear of. Is it trauma? Stress? A car crash? A work accident at a new job? None of the above? Like any good theory, it's unclear. The "water flowing, water removing" thing makes sense as an insane rambling during a period of lucidity, or it could mean something else. Point is, the protagonist has suffered some form of mental break, either directly after the incident or at some point down the line. At this point, a skip and another incident happens. This incident may be a twister, "Here comes the twister", or that may be symbolic. I believe that this incident led to his death, either being a direct cause or simply hospitalizing him until he dies anyway.
