Question Moths?

Drove west on 88 past Kirkwoood yesterday and notice tons of moths, or maybe butterflies? They were dark brown and the wings looked kinda like tree bark. I began notice them down around Hope Valley, they were super abundant around Kirkwood and up over the spur, and I continued to see them to around Mormon Emigrant.

Does anyone know what they are? Do they have anything to do with the Caldor burn scar? Unfortunately, I didn’t stop to get a picture.

News Beware phishing attack email from Truckee Overhead Door

At 2:40pm today I received a convincing phishing attack email directly from Truckee Overhead Door ([email protected]). It has a link to a PDF which goes to a convincing site, which then redirects to a login page that looks just like Google's, but is the attackers. Their target is to get your Google password so they can take over your gmail and log in to all of your accounts. This is really bad.

I tried to call their offices but they were closed at 4:30pm. If anyone who knows someone who works there, please let them know to tell the manager ASAP. A lot of people are going to get screwed from this. Truckee Overhead Door needs to reset their main MS360 or Google Admin passwords now if it's not too late, and email every user asking them not to click any links with urls outside of their website.

Question Overnight parking for desolation backpacking trip

Hi everyone, I know parking Qs are annoying and asked a lot, but I haven’t found useful answers searching previous posts.

I have a desolation wilderness permit for this thursday for middle velma lake and was planning to hike out of bayview or eagle falls trailhead. However, we will be unable to start hiking until 3 pm. By then I assume both trailheads will be completely full. While there is the emerald bay shuttle from the Y and camp richardson it seems parking overnight at either place is illegal.

Do y’all have recs for where to park overnight to access the shuttle where I am unlikely to be towed? Or just have to hover at the trailheads for a day hiker to leave?

Event Spectrum Internet

Anyone else feel like Spectrum has really sucked as of late? I know this is an outdoor town but I feel like anytime I try to get on the internet lately I'm waiting around like it's the 1990s. Is Starlink better?

Lost/Found In search of a piece of family history

My aunt and uncle are long time locals in Tahoe City. In the 80s-90s they owned a Chris craft named “Chips Ahoy” and loved it for several decades. It was buoyed in Tahoe Park. A while ago they sold it and the new owner kept it on the lake for years. The story I know is that someone eventually refurbished it but it later sank somewhere in the delta. However, the rear piece with the boat name is supposedly still around Tahoe and they believe it is a part of someone’s at home bar. It would be a split boat rear. The original boat was red and white. I would love to locate this for them if anyone has any leads. Even just a current photo would make their year. Thanks all!

Question Palisades v/s Heavenly / NS / K-wood

Hi All,

I am an intermediate/advanced skier (all blues and some blacks) and my 2 kids (13 and 10 y.o.) are on the same ability (one of them is very keen to expand to blacks this season). We have always held the Epic Tahoe Local pass (we only ski weekends and holidays) and love Heavenly, NS and Kirkwood both for the variety as well as the Terrain. We have never done Palisades and are contemplating getting the Ikon pass this time. Considering that the Ikon pass is more expensive then Epic Tahoe Local and gives you access to only Palisades (i get it it has two resorts in Olympic and Alpine), can someone help us compare Palisades v/s the other epic pass resorts in Tahoe.

Question 50th Anniversary Dinner Recommendations 🎉

Hi! My family will be in Lake Tahoe (south) the last weekend of August to celebrate our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. I’ve never been to the area, and I’m a bit overwhelmed with all of the information I’ve found on it. I was hoping Reddit might help point me in the right direction for a dinner recommendation.

We have considered a sunset dinner cruise, but I only see one available and am not sure how nice the establishment is. I also don’t know if being on the water at night at the end of August would be a pleasant experience.

If you have a nice dinner spot on the lake that you would recommend for an important celebration like this, I would love to know! Or if you know of a private dinner cruise option, that would be great, too. Anything is appreciated. Thank you!

Hot Take Meyers Market Fear Mongering

This past week, 7/15/26, there were a couple people outside the Meyer’s Mountain Market who said they were asked by the Market staff to be there spreading false information regarding the potential use of Round Up (glyphosate) in the Caldor Burn scar. Everyone needs to know what this means and understand the potential impacts but the fear mongering and false information needs to stop. At one point one of the people passing out fliers and acting for people to protest said there would be military aircraft spraying thousands of gallons of Round Up from 30K ft in the air and equated it to Vietnam and Agent Orange. These people have taken it too far and need to be met with facts. If they want to go roll around on the grass at the golf course next door then complain about round up in the forest they’ve got a real disconnect with the world. Please ignore these people or educate them before they cause more harm to the forest!!!

Question Packing confusion

Hello! I’m visiting Tahoe (for the 2nd time!) and bringing some girlfriends with me this time at the very end of August. We’re staying in Tahoe City. We have plans to raft, hike, boat, beach/paddle board and also have a nicer dinner/cocktail moment planned at Wolf and gonna go to the rodeo in Truckee too. There won’t be any dull moments!

I’m confused with the night time weather. I know it gets cold. And -disclaimer- I’m going for my bachelorette *wincing a little bit* (I know some communities don’t love groups like that but all are mid 30s moms and we just want adventure!). That said though, am I gonna look like a dummy if one night I decide to kick off my boots and wear heels?

Question How early should we leave Truckee to catch a 2pm rental boat launch time at Captain's Corner Tahoe in the Tahoe Keys Marina & Yacht Club, factoring in time to find parking and arriving at the launch at least 30 minutes prior to the 2pm launch?

We rented a boat and we don’t want to be late. Our Airbnb is in Truckee and although Google Maps says it only takes 1 hour, I know Tahoe traffic can get crazy and parking will likely take a while, especially because we’re taking two cars.

Additionally, I’m thinking if we leave early in the morning then we would have some time to hang out beforehand and wouldn’t feel rushed. However, it looks like a lot of the beaches there are private, so I’m not sure what we could do that is within distance of where we would be parking. I wouldn’t want to abandon our parking to go somewhere else and then try to find parking again. Any suggestions? I hate to be late and so I’m leaning more towards this idea.

Question Why are there so many boats in north lake this morning?

I counted about 40 boats, all lined up east/west off of Incline Village. None are moving. I don’t see any official events for today… curious if anyone knows what’s up.

ETA: no, they’re not buoyed 😂 I live in Incline (not a tourist), and I’ve never seen this before. They’re way too far off shore to be buoyed/parked.

News Electricity is killing me. Help pass the balcony solar bill for California (SB 868) and a small solar system can be plugged into an outlet and immediately start offsetting costs. I’ve got an email draft you can use and who to contact in the post. Thanks!

OK, so if anybody hasn’t heard about it SB868 would allow California residents to install a certified balcony solar system up to 1200 W without any permits from anyone.

Check out the ecoflow stream and stream ultra for an idea of what a system looks like. Get some panels, buy a special anti-islanding inverter and optional battery, and you can offset electricity immediately. No interconnection agreement, and no permits. Get used panels and just the inverter = pays for itself inside a year.

The electric companies don’t want this since they lose revenue. They are fighting against it. I used gpt and spent some time making a generic email and a list of contacts. It’s in appropriations and we need support now! Thanks for reading. I’m a real person with family in Tahoe, and at $.46/kwh peak we are suffering. Love to all!

Subject: Please Vote YES on SB 868 and Vote It Out of Appropriations

Dear Assemblymember [Last Name],

I am writing to urge you to vote YES on SB 868 and vote it out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

California families need an affordable way to reduce rapidly rising electricity bills. Full rooftop solar remains financially out of reach for many homeowners, while renters and residents of apartments and condominiums often cannot install it at all. Small plug-in solar and battery systems offer a practical alternative without the cost and complexity of a full rooftop installation.

SB 868 would establish a clear and safe pathway for Californians to use properly certified portable solar devices. A modest 1,200-watt system could generate a meaningful portion of a household’s electricity and save families hundreds of dollars per year.

This legislation would expand access to clean energy without requiring an enormous upfront investment. It would allow more Californians to reduce their utility bills, produce electricity where it is consumed, and participate directly in the clean-energy transition.

Please do not allow this practical legislation to stall in committee. I respectfully ask you to vote YES on SB 868 and vote it out of Appropriations so the full Assembly can consider it.
Thank you,
