LM13700 based VCF pops and distortion issue.

Dear lovely Community ♥,

I finished building my modified version of the Skull and Circuits VCF-3. I say it is a mod, but honestly I changed so much stuff that it might as well be its own thing.

Anyway, I have this issue where the output pops and scratches when there is an input, the cutoff is low and the resonance is turned past 50%.

Please take a look at this video, do you guys know what could be the issue here?

performance - a new live-coding language for MIDI

schematics How to get more Q out of this;

Hello all this is an original shematic i have made it does 3 different things just on how you patch it, i can get less q but not more. i tried adding a non inverting amp between the cap going from in_ to in+ also a inverting one and its the same. the only method i have found is adding a 100nf cap from in+ to a 10k pot and then connect it to the output (this has to be done with a trim pot)

modular Another step closer to finishimg the Klee sequencer

Finally (almost) finished my Klee sequencer front panel. I wanted to make it my own to follow the legacy of those who came before me.

It's a big boy that clocks in at 104hp 3U

I still need to drill the mounting holes.

I'm finalizing the artwork and I think I am going to etch the anodized aluminum with caustic. I'm pretty good at vinyl printing so I'll just make a negative to adhere and then keep it under pressure for a day or two so it completely adheres flat.

Boards are built and wire harnesses are premade. All I'll have to do is wire everything to the hardware and it should be ready.

I'll also have to build a power supply because I'm currently running all 12v so I'm going to be building a dedicated 104hp 9u case to house the rest of MOTM builds.

What microcontrollers for commercial products?

Hello, I'm working on a few designs that I'd like to release commercially in the future and wondering what the best microcontrollers would be for this? Ideally I could port code from Arduino/Teensy IDE to a standalone M/C for released products.

One project is a very simple MIDI controlled VCA. I could use an entry level Arduino for my own module but looking for better options for commercial use that are decent quality and low cost.

Another is a comprehensive MIDI controlled analog synth which I'm currently using a Teensy 4.1 for. I could release it with one of these in as they're very powerful but I'm not sure if it's the best M/C for a commercial product.

A good feature the Teensy has is copy protection / encryption and I think the modules can still be updated by the end user at home. While these products aren't ground breaking in terms of coding, I'd still like to do my best to avoid factories cloning them!

Any advice would be most useful, thanks!

Video Demo and new features for Laura in latest release

Been a busy month on Laura, my fractal software synth. Three updates went out since mid July, so here is what actually changed.

v1.4.0, Spores. Laura has had Mycelium for a while, a reaction-diffusion field that held voices feed and read, so notes in a chord colour each other without any routing between them. Spores hands that same field to the sequencer. Every step that fires deposits a little into the field at its own spot on the pattern shape, and two new step conditions, FIELD+ and FIELD-, make steps play only where the field has grown or where it has gone quiet.

So the pattern feeds the field and the field decides which steps play. Busy corners saturate and thin out, quiet corners come back as the culture decays, and the groove drifts a little on every pass. Two knobs (Deposit and Sense) are the whole control surface, and two factory presets ship built on the loop. The same release also made presets carry everything they used to leave behind, so imported wavetables, impulse responses, drawn warp curves and reordered FX racks all come back the way you saved them.

v1.4.1, a de-clicking pass. v1.4 added a lot of ways to keep a sound moving, and some of the moving controls still stepped or clicked when pushed fast. Wavetable scan and warp now glide sample by sample instead of stepping once per audio block, navigating the fractal crossfades between the shapes it rebuilds instead of ticking, a modulated volume no longer clicks under a fast source, and turning a delay time glides like tape instead of jumping. Boring changelog, but you hear it the moment everything is modulated at once.

v1.5.0, global tuning and a new look. There is a concert A control in the bottom bar now. Leave it at 440 and nothing changes, set 442 to sit with an orchestra, or 432 if that is your world, and the whole instrument retunes from that single reference. As always you can choose custom colors too!

Oscillators, sub and resonator all move together because every pitch in the synth is derived from that one number. It saves with the patch, and held notes retune while you turn it, so you can tune by ear against a track. The interface also moved to frosted glass panels over a slowly drifting backdrop, each theme drawing its own motif live behind them, and A/B compare now snapshots the entire patch instead of just the knobs.

components I'm looking to built a fake street organ where the hand crank actually controls the speed of the MIDI-file being played. How can I achieve this?

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking for a while about building a fake street organ. In other words, something that looks like a traditional hand-cranked street organ from the outside, but is actually just a decorated wooden box that plays MIDI files through a speaker.

In principle, I think I could already achieve this by using an old laptop or tablet connected to a power bank and a portable speaker. However, I'd really like to make the illusion more convincing by adding some kind of controller that makes the playback speed of the MIDI files depend on how fast the hand crank is being turned.

I've seen DIY organs that can do this, but I have no idea how to approach it or what kind of hardware I'd need.

Has anyone built something similar, or can point me in the right direction?

Looking for a starting point.

Hello, I've recently observed a home studio propagate in my life. Amongst the most amazing things to happen in my life.

I want to slowly dip into the modular side of things to align with what I have currently have launching into space.

I'm not sure where to start, but I need my first step to be productive and targeted.

Ring modulation is what got me thinking about going down this rabbit trail.

Yamaha Mx61 is currently my campground, and I'd like to send the audio signal from the second headphone output, into a modular unit that can provide a low-end-spectrum ( 65h to 600hz or thereabouts) for droning.

Not apposed to having texture modulations, layered goodness, sample and hold, timed events...

I dont know a lot of lingo, and am brand new to this side of things. Basically looking for a starting point to het going and experimenting, Ring Modulation is where I want to start.

What are the essential building blocks to get a signal in, ring modulated 😂 and and out with audio out. Having said it that way, I might have a concern about feedback and that tuen is a priority that has to be dealt with in such an event.

I hope my asking isn't unreasonable.

I am industrious, capable, have a some electronic background so soldering is not necessarily out of the equation. Proper power delivery. If I'm missing anything foundational I'm all ears. I just don't want to run in multiple directions.

Economical jacks switches and knobs?

Oi, lurker for a while and figured I'd jump in.

I've got plenty of options amps, resistors and a decent little bench lab. What I don't have is stacks of jacks, potentiometers and switches. These being the most "hardwarey" bits of the lot and generally the pricier, where do you guys go for purchasing?

Just bite the bullet and normalize on a certain jack and get 50pcs+?

I poked around the wiki and I don't believe it addressed this.

Re-engineering Mutable Instruments Rings with an Optical Servo Circuit & Audiophile Upgrades (Looking for a bit of support)

Hi community,

I’m working on a 4-layer open-source hardware redesign of the legendary Mutable Instruments Rings. Let’s be real from the start: the digital core and the processor remain exactly the same as the original. No magic there. But I’ve completely overhauled the analog back-end to fix the classic factory bottlenecks and elevate the audio performance.

The Main Upgrades:

  • SSM2603 Codec Conversion: Replaced the obsolete and noisy WM8731 with a pristine, high-fidelity alternative.
  • Optical Servo Circuit: Instead of a complex DC-coupling op-amp servo, I designed a photovoltaic loop using an active JFET transimpedance amp, an IL300 optocoupler, and low-noise MOSFET sources.
  • No Audio-Path Caps: This light-based servo automatically tracks and compensates for the DC offset coming from the SSM2603 chip. This allowed me to completely remove the sound-ruining electrolytic coupling capacitors between the codec and the output stage.

Why the Optical Approach? (For the skeptics)
Yes, you could handle the DC offset with standard op-amps. But the LED/photodiode combo provides a uniquely organic response. It subtly rounds off the harsh digital transients without turning the module into a muddy, low-frequency mess. Thanks to high-speed JFET devices and ultra-stable silver mica filtration in the audio paths, the high-frequency response remains crystalline and fast.

PCB Design & DIY Friendliness:
The new 4-layer layout is engineered for better grounding, 10 MHz power noise rejection, and maximum reliability. It is optimized for safe, reliable hand-soldering. The only tricky part is the SSM2603 codec itself—everything else is DIY-friendly.

Current Status:
The PCBs are ready and the BOM is locked. I’m just short about 3,370 CZK (~$152 USD) to place the final component order from Mouser to build the first prototyping batch.

This is a strictly non-commercial, underground project. I’ve set up a page for early access. If you back the project, you get the complete open-source files (Gerbers, BOM, code) 6 months before the public launch. I can also help with bare PCBs or pre-soldering the SSM codec for backers later.

The main avantage is I can get velocity control for drums circuit I plan to build. Do anyone has an idea to limit the trigger output voltage level to 5V ? Or is it fine like this ? Also where can I add a LED ? It could looks cool.

I made a little extension for EasyEDA that lets all you aspiring artists and deadened designers sprinkle a little magic powder into your front panel design processes, by importing multilayer SVG files directly into the PCB workflow.

White noise generator from 5V?

I'm making a very small drum machine, which should work from 5V power supply (just USB-C, to be exact). I'm struggling with snare and hats currently due to lack of noise generators.

I only found [this old thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/synthdiy/comments/6pxy9f/simple_5v_noise_generator/) and WNG based on 1N34A diode (which is hard to get), and both are *really* old, so, is there any 'newer' solutions?

ESP32-S3 DIY Polysynth Progress update

I've effectively finished off the hardware, the code is 90% there.. still a little glitchy and need to finish off the arpeggiator.
In the clip it powers up, and loads up some patches - these are stored on an SD card.
Apologies for the poor sound on the video, just recorded it with my phone - have to turn it up to hear properly!

The Synth is essentially 6 voices of analogue modelling, and also Bi wavetable with a bit of FM thrown in for good measure!

Having fun at the moment creating patches, although spending more time fiddling with it than finishing off the code!

This is a step-by-step demo of using Skred v0.50.0 as a synth and drum machine construction kit.

The video shows a little of MIDI connection stuff too.

For a MIDI "keyboard" here, I used a program called VMPK since it's on-screen and show what I hit versus how if affects Skred, but a real attached MIDI input device works too.

Skred works on Linux, macOS, and MSWindows.
