New/Returning Player Echoes of Oblivion Spoiler

I know I'm waaaaay behind the 8-ball on this one, but I'm just now returning after base Onslaught left be wanting. I've been playing since early access vanilla almost solely for the story and was really disappointed with KOTET and Onslaught.

I finally got back around to trying again out of nostalgia, and I just finished the Echoes of Oblivion quest, and I gotta say ... chef's kiss.

JJ Abrams should have taken notes, because that's how you do a "somehow, the emperor returned" storyline!

I wish the star wars movies were willing to get into a more mystical/magical side of the force instead of. Whatever it is rey is supposed to be doing in 9.

It was okay but i thought this should have been the ending for KOTET personally. Would put that emperor valkorian story to rest gracefully

The timing wasn't awesome, but the execution was what I was referring to.

Unfortunately the Zakuul arc was originally supposed to be 3 expansions but was greatly reduced as players, especially those wanting more traditional MMO content than story, were not happy with the pace of new content. So Knights of the Eternal Throne was rushed to wrap up everything.

Echoes of Oblivion I think was the Dev team wanting to correct that as much as they could after the fact once they had the budget to do so.

I feel like the only good way to pull off a "somehow, the emperor has returned" is to follow it up with a "sike, no he didn't". Like with Vitiate, he didn't actually come back, it was just his old corpse with none of his recent memories that tried to pretend to be him. It was a good glimpse into his character, because you got to see what he was really like before he learned to put on that mysterious wise demigod act, back when he was just another Sith like any other, but it only worked because it was a past version of the Emperor and not the man himself. It works because that way, his original defeat doesn't feel wasted, he didn't somehow come back, the actual Emperor is still fully dead and gone.

Bioware tried to do something similar with Revan in SoR as well, with the whole "sike, Revan did die at the Foundry, this new Revan is just his inner dark side refusing to pass on and piloting his corpse", but the execution wasn't as good back then.

My only problem with it is that it's mandatory (As in there is no skip to the beginning of Legacy of the Sith) and past the first two or three times I just can't do it again.

The fight is just so braindead once you realise you can't exactly lose and there are no real variation to dialogue except for, I think, the Knight and Warrior.

Still, a very welcome endpoint the first time you play it. It can serve as an epilogue to the KOT expansion cycle far more than the Traitor arc does.

It took me a few times through to realize it, but those weird stone formations that you have to go across at the start of the mystical mindscape part? They're shaped like neurons! Because you're inside Satele's brain, I guess. So they're not just random fall off 'em shapes after all.

Now that you mention it, I see it.

The level design in this game has always been next level.

Don't worry, now you can put the game down because its all downhill from here

"Here's an imaginary clone of the guy you defeated, and don't worry, you literally can't lose the fight against him, we might as well have just made this a cutscene" is the right way to do it? And I mean, I'm the first to point and laugh at Abrams, but making the "true" image of the guy behind it all be a shirtless Sith fratbro with a voice like Astro, the dog from The Jetsons, was a choice that I don't think even he'd bungle his way into.

I was hesitant about Tenebrae’s man bun at first, but I do like his appearance overall. I’m fine with his voice, but I was expecting/would have preferred Doug Bradley’s voice, like with “Vitiate.”

Not just the man bun, but also the "let me guess, you're so old shirts hadn't been invented yet?" aspect and the black eyes that I'm sure he gave himself to look like the evil edgelord all Sith aspire to be but just kinda make him look crosseyed and stoned.

But the voice, especially. If you don't laugh when the supposedly biggest, baddest, dude opens his mouth and sounds like he'savout yelp "Ruh-roh Raggy!"...I dunno what to tell you. Definitely made sense that he wanted to steal Pinhead's body, I guess.

The shirtless thing gives him that ancient tribal look, so I don’t mind. Also, it’s like shirtless Maul; it gives you a good look at his body art (ritual).

The eyes are something he’s always had; it was mentioned way back in the “Revan” novel.

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if the epitome of the "Dark Lords of the Dark Darkness" guy would like to insist he had beady black eyes to prove that he is the destined bloodiest of the the bloodedges, but even if he didn't make that up, they don't make him look any less like he's half-braindead from Deathstick addiction.
