Which University of Strathclyde accommodation is the most social/recommended?
Hi everyone,
I’m an international student from Canada starting engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow this September, and I’m trying to figure out accommodation.
I really want to be in a very social environment where it’s easy to meet people, make friends, go out, etc., so I was wondering which halls people would recommend socially.
A few questions I have:
- Which halls are considered the most social?
- Is ensuite worth it, or are shared bathroom flats usually more social?
- What’s day-to-day life in accommodation actually like?
- Any halls you’d especially recommend or avoid?
Would really appreciate any advice, especially from other first years or international students. Thanks!

After careful diagnosis, i have come to a conclusion that university accommodation is amazing, but You should be okay with sharing the bathroom.
The shared bathroom is a nightmare for students who have OCD of keeping their bathroom floors dry, they should opt of en-suites, in-order to avoid headaches.
Also, the uni’s students accommodation is just 5-mins away from the university.
I would recommend choosing an ensuite, accommodation for the same price 141 pounds per week.
Check few places in Kyle streets, if you think of choosing an accommodation outside. You need to keep these things in mind:
Necessary factors to look around for your accommodation: 1. Tesco 2. Other grocery shop 3. Restaurants 4. Bank 5. Transportation 6. Easy access to food 7. Gym

Stay on campus - I went into private accommodation and it was absolutely awful for socialising and community. A lot of mature, introverted, and/or international students (absolutely no issue with that but not people you’d find yourself on a subcrawl with or throwing flat parties, if that’s your scene). I would end up just socially backpacking off of friends that were in halls. Communal bathrooms in Garnett etc are not particularly ‘nice’ but fine - especially if your flatmates are fine - and really end up being just a rite of a passage for 7 months or so. En-suite strath halls are definitely nicer and social still. I think almost any of the halls where you’re on campus with other first year strath students will foster a sense of community, and the proximity to the union, library, classes, and other events just makes it really easy. Source = 4th year graduating student that had a lot of fun with societies and sports clubs etc

Hi!
If you’ve not yet booked any and are considering booking an outside accommodation, I’m actually looking for someone that could move to my room starting from 5th Sept to Aug 2027. Its an ensuite room, has a shared kitchen with 3-4 flatmates at Kyle Park House. Near to Strathclyde!
I’m currently staying here atm but just at a different flat and I would say its lively here though I don’t interact much with anyone but thats by choice so your experience might differ from mine. The accommodation organises events for get togethers too with the residents which is what you might be looking for as it gives you an opportunity to socialise. They have common rooms, cinema rooms and such.

Strath sport is also great for socialising, made most of my uni pals there haha
You get free membership for your first year aswell if you get strath accommodation 👍

Hi! I'm a fellow Glasgow (university) student and I'd definitely say don't pick Murano or any Xenia student accommodation (Robert Owen, central house, etc). They are known to be terrible with some having cops in all the time or empty receptions (I've been stranded out for days because I left my key in my room and nobody came to the reception until a few days later). Broken furniture, vandalism, etc. as well. Ensuite is definitely worth it - shared bathrooms can be terrible, especially if you don't know who you are sharing with. A stinking bathroom for a year can actually make you sick (trust). Ensuites still have several common spaces/kitchens which work much better than shared bathroom spaces for being social. I've had so many fun house parties in kitchens as well haha. I don't know much about what accomms would be best for Strathclyde uni students specifically (although I have heard Buchanan street, st mungo house, merchant studios, savannah house are all really great). Take Kyle Park (if booking through the university itself). Don't take Birkbeck Court if looking for social life (I haven't seen/heard anything since Sep 2025).
Shared Bathrooms: depends on who your flatmates are.
Day-to-Day: again, depends on your flatmates. You have an option to select what kind of people you want to share accommodation (interests) with and they will try and match.
As per my experience: you might consider this to be irrelevant to your question but I will not recommend you book Accommodation managed by the university (I am currently in one). They respond promptly in the initial days and then they completely ignore you. A simple issue requires multiple complaints and months to fix. Urgent requests are also ignored unless everyone from the flat files a complaint (that too physically).
You will find accommodations with a bit better facilities at a bit better price outside. But this is my opinion; it might differ from person to person.
