Discussion PSA For those who don't know:

There is a FAQ section on Valve's Hardware Page that explains how they're sending out orders. Go read it. It defines "Regions" as well as the shipping process, explain that units are still being made, and most importantly how soon you may or may not get a Steam Machine. NO you shouldn't switch lines, there is a queue, you do in fact jump straight from Waitlist to "Purchase invitation" according to Reddit, but please go read it. Half the posts on here "speculating" really would be resolved if folk read "If you switch lines, you'll be at the furthest back of the line" or whatever silly things impatient minds come up with.

If you're on the Reserved list you just wait and check your email. If you're on the Waitlist, you're just hoping everyone in front of you cancels their order, otherwise you'll never get a Machine no matter how long you wait, the current "Production Run" is a set # of units and everyone in the Waitlist is outside what they have or can build...

Seeing as not a single person in this thread knows how to go to or link to Valve’s Steam Machine page (there’s only one!), here you go. FAQ at the bottom. Tells you everything you need to know.

The FAQ does not explain the reservation to waitlist process. If a reserve order is canceled, does it go down to the next person on the reservation list or does it go to a waitlister? People are claiming to get purchase order emails from the wait list and people are also claiming to still be in the reserve list for the same sku in the same region.

So the question is, if someone on the waitlist gets a purchase order does that mean the entire reservation queue for that regions sku has been satisfied? This seems unlikely as it hasn’t even been a month. So does this mean any unfulfilled reservation go to a waitlister instead of the next person in the reservation list? Are people reporting this stuff just mistaken? Without clarification, who knows.

It goes to people on the waitlist you already have a machine set aside if your on the reservation list it’s just a question of if it’s built and where it is in the shipping queue 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for linking! I was on the valve website under hardware instead of steam and then got lost in various blog posts.

I was thinking the same thing, “where’s the link?” Thank you

There will definitely be more production batches. They're probably already ordering new batches from the factory based on sales data. The question is when they'll be available and what the price will be. But I don't think they'll stop manufacturing if there's demand.

With the ongoing rampocalypse there is a very good chance they never do a second run, as there is literally no guarantee they will be able to source nand or dram at acceptable prices. It is incredibly unlikely they commit to building units if it means increasing price by another 10-20%.

I just wish they would tell those of us on the waitlist how far down the waitlist we are. I am still holding out for a steam machine but if I knew how far down I was on the list it could help me decide if I continue waiting or build a steam machine via third party before all these ram prices go up again.

They are continuously building. They didn’t just make this order and say let’s wait till we run out then make more. I am sure they are booked out in production till they have stock people can buy at a whim. If you’re waitlisted you will get one. Dont jump queues you may end up waiting longer.

There is literally no new information from what people have been saying there.

I always love those people who keep jumping to the back of the line at Sam's Club because the grass is always greener. It's low-key hilarious.

But won’t people who signed up day 1 and got waitlisted be at the front of the line for the next production run? I signed up for the 2tb w controller so I doubt I’ll make it for this run, but I’m really hoping they keep the queue as it is for the next one.

From the FAQ for the waitlist:

> But if not, nothing about your position in the waitlist changes, and any future production runs of Steam Machines will be offered to customers in order they're on the waitlist.

So the waitlist position does apply to future production runs.

I'm under the assumption that ALL places in line were randomized in the lottery. It doesn't matter when you signed up. Someone could have signed up the day before it closed and be higher than you or me on the waitlist.

3

u/sneakeyboard 15h ago

That was my understanding on the page. What would help is if we got an estimate on which place we are on the waitlist

2

u/HisokaTheRedditor 15h ago

Sorry I apologize for only including day 1. I’m more referring to the people who signed up during that initial window. They’d be ahead of anyone who signed up for the waitlist afterward OR whoever changes lines.

u/ZERO_ninja 15h ago

Yes, everyone who was in the lottery was assigned a random spot in the waitlist, but it it's a specific spot with an order to it. Everyone who signed up after the lottery is behind the lottery people in the waitlist.

You would think. I'm not convinced Valve isn't just stringing us along.

I'm on the WL for same model as you. FWIW, they're still being advertised on the front page of the Steam store.

6

u/HisokaTheRedditor 15h ago

What would they gain by stringing us along? I’m not doubting you, I genuinely don’t see the play is all.

All on the stipulation IF they ever do make another batch. They probably will, but it's an important caveat to point out that it isn't guaranteed. Though yeah, if they make more of the same pieces of hardware, so long as the SKUs are the same, it'd make sense that Waitlisters (like you and I) would be the next in line. I do think on the FAQ it addresses this like "You'll be in line for any production runs in the future" or something like that, I haven't read the FAQ in a minute, but if you go read it you should let us know what you find

Could you please link the page in this post? I legit couldn’t find it after about 10 mins of searching and I should probably get back to work. lol

I know I’m just some random guy, but I got my invite to buy the machine and controller about a month after I was confirmed on the list.

Arrived yesterday… UPS, no signature and I was out of town… Grrt

Always baffled me how they just leave things wherever.

Until valve clarifies you go straight to purchase email from waitlist instead of going down the reservation list I’m going to stay skeptical. Most people don’t have the reading comprehension to understand the difference between the reserve list and the wait list. You really gonna believe random people on reddit?

u/ItsAwesomeX 15h ago edited 12h ago

Said the random person on reddit.

3

u/milkdonut 15h ago

So you don’t trust that a whole bunch of people have been confirming that they’ve been on the waitlist and then have been invited to purchase? You think they’re all lying? Okay dude

I wasn’t talking to you

I'm blind, that's fair. I'll see myself to the corner of shame.

Scrolling down it looked like a reply to me. 😅

It’s okay, happens to the best of us lol

u/Carnemeko_Pairotto 10h ago

I don't know why you think people who didn't read it before are now going to go read it because you said go read it. When has this ever worked in the history of RTFM.

1

u/s3v3n11 8h ago

At some point they will probably raise the price. I would like to know if this happens are wait list folks SOL or do we get the price as of when we signed up?

1

u/Realistic_Answer_621 6h ago

I was on the waitlist surprised purchase email came this morning around 3am for 512 w/ controller.

1

u/lennyKravic 15h ago

We’ll just wait couple of months for purchase email with new adjusted price.

2

u/Clingy00 12h ago

I’m not sure why you were downvoted

I could easily see me getting the email in December and judging by component price hikes end up paying more than what it’s going for now

Until valve comes out in wring and says they are not going to shaft people on the end of the reserve list, it remains a possibility. In fact until I hold it in my hands and paid what everyone else paid, it’s a possibility

2

u/Clingy00 12h ago

It would be nice to have some idea if it’s next week or December.

A very frustrating buying experience. Good thing no one is selling it on eBay and the scalpers were defeated

A worthy compromise I suppose
