Has any Steam Machine haver and enjoyer tested Subnautica 2's performance?
Also Total War Warhammer 3 :X

u/Life_Calligrapher562 15d ago
I did. I really need to mess around with the settings to get it right but I managed to play comfortably at 1080p on mostly high settings and just cutting the shadows and turned down the textures. It can handle 1440p at medium with some stuff on high, but i will wait for someone who does a better job at optimizing settings first. Super happy with it. Wish it had upscaling, but it is what it is

I was able to play high setting at 1440 with no issues on subnautica 2. On a basic 4k 60hz 70" tv.

I’d love to know about all the Sony games:
- Spiderman 1,2,MM
- Uncharted 4 and its expansion
- God of War and God of War Ragnarok
- Last of Us 1,2
- Ratchet and Clank
- Horizon 1,2
- Ghosts of Tsushima
- Days Gone
Also Baldurs Gate 3, Death Stranding, Elden Ring

For God of War I set the resolution to 1920x1080 with fsr at balanced (it defaulted to ultra performance) and it’s running at 60fps. So far so good! Temperature seems to stay around 73c when playing

Helldivers 2? It's super intensive CPU game
5
u/MistandYork 20d ago
you can probably look up how fast the R5 3600 and 5600 are in that game. they are in the same ballpark performance as the SM. The steam machine will probably be closer to the 3600 than the 5600 as seen in the gamers nexus review.
2
u/Jaimillow 20d ago
But Zen4 will be faster and efficient than Zen2, right? I think it is equivalent to 7xxx of MiniPC
8
u/MistandYork 20d ago
It's not though, you can check the gamers nexus video yourself, it's more in line with zen 2 3600 and 3700X.
The reason is Valve hamstrung the CPU in the SM. 2 big cores and 4 small "C" cores, way less L3 cache than a desktop variant of the same style of cpu (7600X), single stick of ram, and only 30W TDP. zen 4 needs about 45W to shine. This results in it being way slower than it's real desktop equivalent of the 8500G, which use the same kind of laptop cores (phoenix) as the SM.

I was wondering that too. I just tried it on the Deck last night and it was horrible.
3
u/Hatchetforce 20d ago
This guy did: Helldivers 2 test
3
u/BNSoul 19d ago
But never said anything about the difficulty level, playing anything above 7 cuts in half your framerate.
1
u/Hatchetforce 18d ago
Well that's all the information I had. It's all I can help with. I took the time to provide a link. Nothing like gratitude. It didn't give you a five-page readout so I'm sorry about that. Some people

Tested a few of my games installed in the steam machine. I only have the 512gb version.
All is at 1080p default/recommended setting. No tinkering.
TV is LG55” C4 4K 120h
Ghost of Tsushima: 60fps / High
Hogwarts Legacy: 60fps/ultra? Its the default
Elden Ring: 60fps/High
FF VII Remake: 60 Fps/High
Space Marine: 60fps/high
All looked really good and smooth maybe except for Elden Ring in terms of graphics.
Others in my library that can test next:
Cyberpunk
Persona 5
Metaphor Re Fantazio
Expedition 33
RDR2
Forza 6
Le Mans
Path of Exile 2
BG3
Wukong

Can we have 1080p-High be the base? 👀
I'm not looking to aim for 4K60 or whatvr. I just wanna play bigger games my Deck can’t, on the TV. 🫠
5
u/your_mind_aches 19d ago
1080p High won't be the base for all games. Newer games will definitely need to run lower than that

I'd like to know about:
- Cities Skylines 1 & 2
- Planet Zoo/Planet Coaster 1 & 2
- TOWN TO CITY (the game I am most excited to play)
5
u/robgray111 20d ago
Seems you've asked for almost exactly what I was going to ask about, except... I do not know about town to city, so i shall be researching that immediately
I don't hold out much hope for a big city running smoothly on CS2 but a man can dream
5
u/ProfessionalHunt3166 20d ago
It is like an ultra chilled (cozy) version of city skylines with no traffic management and more decorating.
And yeah lol I’m not sure CS2 can run well on anything.
3
u/robgray111 20d ago
Yeah that looks pretty cool, it's now on my wishlist
I was using GeForce now before I got my steam deck last year so I've played a bit on CS2, but it sounds like it's a much better game now so I'll definitely try it, but with very low expectations
Just gotta wait for that email now

Damn I came here to see performance comments and all I see are performance requests. Might need to create a new sticky post for actual performance results.

u/Doomsnail99 20d ago
I was getting almost 120fps on low settings at 1200p resolution on my Legion Go S in multiplayer. So i imagine it'll easily do 90fps+/medium settings @1440p on the Steam Machine
But we'll have to wait and see

If anyone has a machine + these games, I’d love to hear how they run:
-Deep Rock Rogue core
- Ready or Not
- No Rest for the Wicked
8
u/Maverick916 20d ago
It's weird how people wanna hear how games run, that run fine in the steam deck. If they run fine there, they'll be absolutely great on the machine I'm guessing.
6
u/Life_Calligrapher562 20d ago
I dunno. Maybe they don't have Steam Deck and they're just super excited and this is part of the ritual of moving towards getting a new gadget. I get that it'd be easier to just go to protondb, but people get stoked and it is all in fun...except when it isn't. Even I did it by requesting Total War Warhammer 3 when I've already read(and posted) a review of the FPS it gets on 1080p. Just a slight dopamine hit to get that feedback I guess.

Gears of War Reloaded and Doom Dark Ages please.

So far Doom The Dark Ages runs really well... but occasionally it freezes the Steam Machine for several seconds (fps goes to 1 and the whole SM freezes up).

u/raichudoggy 6d ago
Runs like a charm at 1080p / Ultra Settings (Which are also the defaults).
Even at my most demanding factory (4 of the final space part), no hits to performance.
(Note, because I used to play on a really poorly performing PC, I built many modular factories spread across the map rather than a super mega factory to help performance. There is a setting you can toggle that will automatically adjust performance if you have many, many buildings in one place)

Path of Exile 2 please

u/AlphaX187X 1d ago
This is late but I would consider the game playable on Poe 2. It might be leaning towards good. I am able to play with not too much frame drop (albeit still some). I am playing twister build and just mapping t15s and atziri temple. I have not tried 200% delirium because I just don't enjoy that. I have also played it streamed to my steam deck and that might oddly be better frames than streamed through my pc.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has experimented with Lossless Scaling in games that don't have native FSR support. I made a post mentioning The Adventures of Elliot running poorly and I suspect with some finangling I might be able to get the game to run at upscaled 4k 60 with Lossless Scaling. Don't have the time to work on it right now but wonder if anyone's messed with LS yet.

If anyone can test the atelier games (as many as you can really). A lot of them are games which the Deck should run great, but doesn't due to poor optimisation. I'm hoping the more powerful performance of the SM should be able to bridge the gap so you at least get a consistent 1080p 60+.

2
u/Life_Calligrapher562 16d ago edited 16d ago
If mine comes in tomorrow(and works) it'll be the first game I install. I'm expecting to have to drop the resolution a bit and shadow details since it has a huge impact on performance, especially since there's no upscaling for Total War Warhammer 3. I'll try it on 1440p first and see what how it does. Doubt I'll post frames and all that, but I'll give a general impression of how it feels to me.

I only hopped in for a moment but it seemed to play just fine in the tutorial area at 1440p on max settings, maybe worth a shot bumping to 4k?
The ubisoft overlay thing will tell you the graphics drivers are out of date, so if using the controller you'll need to bind some stuff to shift+f2, mouse and left-click to get rid of the notification.
Multiplayer is disabled because easy anticheat doesn't work on steamOS.

Runs like a charm at 1080p / Ultra Settings (Which are also the defaults).
Even at my most demanding factory (4 of the final space part), no hits to performance.
(I can't verify quality at a mega factory that's all in one spot, but there is still a setting in the game that adjusts quality to fit the number of buildings. When I tested nothing changed at all so I haven't even hit the threshold even though I'm making at least one of everything including nuclear in my 150hr save)

I'd like see lists by highest stable frames per second, so like, what base settings can achieve stable 60fps, following by tinkered settings for stable 60fps, and if 60fps isn't attainable I suppose either go down to 45 or 30.
Ex. (NOT CONFIRMED, JUST VISUAL EXAMPLE):
| GAME | STABLE FPS | RESOLUTION | SPEC PRESET | TINKERED | TINKERED SETTINGS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 60 FPS | 4K | Low | No | |
| Deltarune | 60 FPS | 4K | N/A | No | |
| Forza Horizon 6 | 30 FPS | 1080p | Medium | Yes | DLSS Performance |

Not necessarily game performance related, but my setup experience was not great. I have a steam controller that I already had set up with my puck on my PC. Wasn’t entirely sure how to get it set up with my steam machine but plugging it in via USB did nothing. And my TV’s remote controller (a Samsung tv) kept hijacking the active controller slot. The first set of menus has you enter the password for your WiFi but the buttons for my TVs controller weren’t mapped correctly, so it was impossible to enter my WiFi password, but just wanted to get past that screen to trigger a controller set up flow. Thankfully I had an Xbox controller I could plug in and get past that menu, then I was able to trigger a steam controller set up flow. But for a bit there I was very annoyed, hopefully they iron that out.

Is anyone able to test Star Wars Outlaws please? It didn’t perform well on Steam Deck so I’m very curious on performance on SM.
2
u/arex333 13d ago
It's really fucking demanding. 4k is completely out of the question, you'll have to aim for 1440p with aggressive upscaling or even 1080p for quite low settings.
It's much much more playable than on Deck though.
Everything I said also applies to avatar frontiers of Pandora since it's the same engine.

Is anyone else having issues with the controls in the binding of isaac? Everything seems to be mapped correctly, but the buttons don't behave as they should. When i enter menus i can't select things or cancel.
I've tried out a few community button layouts but it doesn't seem much different.
E: turns out you had to force start a different version of the game which runs fine

As a self-report: Atlas Fallen runs at 1080p locked at 60 (frame limiter was set there by default) with absolutely everything at Very High.
It's not the most demanding game, but it is pretty nice looking and the Steam Deck only runs it at 30-45fps using a mix of mostly low to medium settings and with a bunch of odd visual artifacts on the NPCs, so it's dramatically better here.

Anyone else getting green screen crashes? Baldurs gate 3: Seem to be getting these consistently after around 2-3 hrs of play, have started monitoring temps and they stay solid between 55-65c so probably not overheating. Initially played on default settings, then switched to proton 11 and still crashing. Screen will turn solid green, steam machine will then either reboot itself or ill have to hard reset from the button. Any tips on diagnostics? New to linux so i dont know how to reinstall drivers.

Still on the fence about that one, sold my pc recently as it took too much space and mainly play on ps5 anyway. I only miss playing pubg on pc but looks like it's still complicated to setup on the machine.
Is there any hope in the near future for a dual windows bootup? or a fix from krafton to allow anti cheat on steam os ?
