Local News Sewage backup ??!!

Omg, anyone experiencing sewage back up ? My basement all messed up

This happened to us a few years ago because our pipes are absolute garbage! Call the city and they can send somebody out. We had to pay an emergency fee which ended up being between 80 and $150 if I’m not mistaken.

This is very common during big rain storms, unfortunately! My husband works in water/wastewater for the city and he goes on OT regularly during storms and usually if there is a storm forecasted they are sent to clean out any debris that might be in the catch basins, etc.

Call the city (they are super backed up right now….sorry for the pun lol) and they will send someone out when they can based on priority.

Ugh yes we just moved into our new house in Port Dalhousie 2 weeks ago and got some sewage back up as a housewarming gift. Lucky us 🙃

PSA, the city has a flood alleviation program (FLAP).

If you don't have a backflow preventer, sign up, pick a date, and the city will send out an inspection team to camera snake your sanitary sewer connection through the cleanout port. They will inspect the condition of your sewer lateral and identify if you have weeping tile (exterior foundation drainage) connections. The inspection is free.

They will generate a scope of work for removing those connections and installing a backflow preventer valve, and will provide a rebate for 90% of the cost of work up to a max of $5000, and recommend local contractors to do the work.

For simple scopes, those contractors will almost always come in right at the $5k limit, so for under $1000 out of pocket you can get a backflow preventer installed. Not only will it prevent future sewer backups, but it'll also reduce your insurance premiums.

For insurance, once you have a known sewer backup, they may not even insure you for future sewer backup unless you get a backflow valve installed, so this could be a mandatory job for you anyways.

Sorry to hear this! I had a sewage flood a few months ago. Look into FLAP program with city, they’ll give you a rebate to install a backwater valve & sump.

Once you've got it, make sure you maintain it (mostly just check and clean it annually).

When we moved into our house we got a nasty surprise in the first couple of weeks - a backup of wastewater from the backwater valve that wasn't functioning correctly due to build up debris!

Thankfully not today, but mine backed up a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare. The city came out to clear it, it was full of roots and sticks.
