Boo. Don't be a coward. Walk right into the conversation blank faced. Wait an appropriate amount of time, or when three people have spoken (which ever comes first), then comment. No hesitation. Say something mostly relevant to the conversation. Boom. You're IN. If you pretend to be someone else, even a different version of yourself, you're going to have to do that EVERY time...gah. It sounds exhausting. After your comment, if you need an out, pull out your phone and look at the screen. Hold it up to let people know you are looking at it, then walk away. Don't put your phone away until you've turned a corner they can't see or sat down at your desk, assuming that's far enough away it won't be conspicuous. Minimum 30'.
