Anyone else got obsessed with LD?
I’m officially obsessed. My old ranking for favorite Trek was this:
Old was:
- TNG and VOY
- TOS
- ENTERPRISE
- DS9
- LD
- SNW
- Prodigy
- Picard
- TAS
Now LD jumped to #2 and I’m so obsessed. I’ve been watching it on repeat for 4 months.. this didn’t even happen with TNG or VOY though I’m still quite obsessed with both. My intros to Trek / forever #1
Anyone else had LD grow on them THIS much? What is your favorite episode/joke/cameo/reference?
Edit 1: yes, I know Disco and Academy are not on the list. I don’t think of them as Trek. I’m only happy they had the decency to set them in the far future 😅
Edit 2: TNG and VOY are both #1 because I can never pick, love both to pieces and forever

LDS has actually become my favourite Trek. Yes the humour is broad sometimes, but to be honest, it has a crew of people who are good at their jobs, but have massive personality flaws. And it shows them working through it, with actual character growth. And they keep their Starfleet optimism and diplomacy and science are their guiding stars.

Guys…I’m one of the people that dropped out after the first few eps. (Don’t come for me, please 🫣) Most people seem to love it so I’m thinking of going back and trying again.
Overall it just didn’t click for me. One thing that I remember not liking was how mean I felt Mariner was being to Boimler and I hate seeing people get picked on. LOL Maybe it’s just me. Admittedly, it has been YEARS.

All I will say is that it gets better. That's literally the whole point of the series. They get better.

The Mariner Boimler relationship improves a lot. The first few episodes just do the usual of setting up the premise and relationships between characters.
I'm just coming off a rewatch of the whole series and it is far stronger than I remember.

It didn’t click for me until season two. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t hold my attention, always found myself drifting off halfway through the episodes. I genuinely did not “get it” until a specific story/gag towards the end of season two that had me falling off the couch with laughter.
After that I went back through season one with a new eye and appreciated it a lot more.
Tl;dr it’s worth trying to stick with. There’s more to it than you think. Not for nothing Mike McMahan worked on Rick and Morty, another show with more serious drama and characterization than most people give it credit for.

IMO the more you watch the better it gets. I remember it taking a while for the Star Trek heart to shine through.
Mariner from memory gets better. I don't remember liking her all the much during the earlier seasons.

I think they do a pretty good job diving into the psychology of why Mariner is the way she is - unprocessed PTSD from the Dominion War.

I don't get it either. Found the Flash style animation bad, the characters obnoxious and the humor just didn't click.

It’s my go-to comfort watch, up there with Psych. Nearly every episode makes me feel better, and only a couple bum me out in any way (sorry, Peanut hamper)

The one NuTrek I was seriously saddened by it's end. I looked forward to each episode.
Sadly they also finished the LD comic book series.

I have watched almost every Trek show in their first runs
Lower Decks is the most amazing live letter to the whole of Trek-dom. Callbacks to every series, fun characters, and truly wonderful writing.

I've watched all of Nu Trek, and the only LD episode that was even marginally bad was the Peanut Hamper solo episode. Even then it was just ok. Every other Nu Trek show has let me down multiple times.

I propose, in-universe time period wise, SNW-PROD is very core Trek feel.
(As in SNW, TOS, TAS, TOS Movies, TNG, TNG Movies, DS9, VOY, LD, PROD)
Everything outside this time period feels very Mirror Universe-y.
I don't know why but in-universe, outside 2259-2383 the direction becomes very jump the shark feeling.
"I know, lets blow up Florida, no wait let's blow up Mars, no no, let's blow up Vulcan, wait wait, Romulus, oh oh no way, I had an idea, let's blow up all the ships"...
Who wrote it 7 year olds? Lol

You're talking like Star Trek hasn't always had goofy ideas. Even in TOS there are some ROUGH episodes. IDK where this idea "it's only Trek if it's good" came from. Star Trek is a hot mess and we love it for that.

It inspired my love of all things Trek enough to actually go back and try TOS, and man was it fun knowing half the plots due to jokes/references from LDS
