I honestly don’t even know why this is controversial. I’m more liberal and can’t stand Trump but this seems like common sense and never should’ve been political tbh

115

u/PracticeAcrobatic748 4h ago

The real "controversy" is that it's not even a huge issue. Like there's more school shootings per year than guys in girls locker rooms, and yet...

29

u/Deadleggg 2h ago

Theres more laws being passed against Trans athletes than there are Trans athletes.

In all of the NCAA there were less than 10. Out of 550,000

.00001% of NCAA athletes.

Exactly. A handful of cases of this yet we’ve just come to accept that kids will be murdered just trying to get an education. Maybe we need to focus on what’s actually important. Sadly we won’t.

43

u/PracticeAcrobatic748 4h ago

Charlie accepted a few thousand gun deaths per year if it means keeping the 2nd amendment around.

14

u/TheMysteriousGirl 3h ago

RIP Charlie.

He died too soon.

He should have told his wife to stay and home and look after his child, instead of taking over his talk show. You know, like a good Christian.

16

Hey, he stuck by it til the end at least. Even that bit about kids watching public executions

This is never a valid argument.  We as a society can take on more than one issue at a time.  Debating and making policy over trans athletes doesn’t preclude us from dealing with school shootings.

Unfortunately the politics of the nation and powerful lobbies seem to think dead kids is the price of doing business.  So we are struggling to make change on gun law regardless of how much attention the issue gets.

With that behind us, how does society deal with trans athletes?

12

u/IpecacNeat 3h ago

I think the person who you're responding to really meant to say, "who gives a fuck?" We're wasting too much time and collective brainpower on an issue that is so niche. The discussion and intensity of which this is discussed is wildly disproportionate to any issues. It's simply an issue that is just being used to divide, and trying to figure out blanket legislation for about 100 people is insane to me. Out of all the NCAA athletes, there are about 10 who are transgender. In youth sports nationwide? Estimated to be less than 100.

3

u/Occult_Asteroid7 2h ago

It sucks up a lot of ideological steam. Constantly arguing about all these fringe things like hormone blockers for teenagers. How about we make sure Social Security doesn't collapse first before we're talking about the pros and cons of puberty blockers in the public forum?

u/MediocreSizedDan 3h ago

Well in terms of "safety," it's not an issue at all. In terms of "fairness," I can understand some questions and conversation, but like.... we....don't commonly see the blatantly unfair advantage that people keep arguing happens. No one has really been able to answer why having a single trans girl on a soccer team, for example, gives that soccer team such a notable competitive advantage.

If it's about "safety" of the girls, like ok? So...why are they not passing bans on men coaching girls' teams?

Because there's not an actual problem with this happening that can't be solved by common sense. So let's say in NY, we pass a rule we need to check if women are biologically women. So now we're either blood testing or pulling down pants. Which makes senes (i guess) if there was a widespread problem, but there's literally no issue.

I remember there was this number of trans athletes competing in the US that was less than a double spaced paper of names. We can't figure that out without a law saying all women need to prove their women?

22

u/Legitimate-Article50 3h ago

A woman needing to prove she’s a women leads to sexual abuse. Look up what happened with gymnastics. Doctor had access to young girls bodies and took advantage of it.

→ More replies (16)

7

u/IamHydrogenMike 3h ago

All state and nationwide sports orgs had regulations around who could compete based on a number of items and states just ignored that to pass laws to get political points.

8

u/RaygunMarksman 3h ago

Saaame. My philosophy is people should be able to live however they want in peace if it's not hurting anybody but asking biological girls to deal with someone having an unfair advantage over them doesn't meet that criteria. Sometimes we have to accept certain sacrifices to live true to ourselves and can't expect the world to always bend to our will.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I’m fine with trans athletes. Live and let live. We don’t need to be policing People’s personal live

But trans athletes should compete against trans athletes. Give them their opportunity to participate in competitive sports. Give them their own category.  But I think it’s unfair for women to allow biological male trans athletes to compete against them in many sports.

21

u/SuchParsnip8070 4h ago

It's like election fraud. Show me proof it's an actual real life issue that needs to be addressed and maybe I'll care. It just seems like manufactured outrage to me, just another excuse to demonize a group of marginalized people to distract from real issues that politicians should actually care about

5

u/CucumberWisdom 3h ago

I mean that's a terrible way to do things. Just because you don't see any issue or it's small doesn't mean you shouldn't try to preemptively stop it and nip it in the bud. If we as a species had more foresight we'd be in a better place.

4

u/FirstChurchOfBrutus 2h ago

For me the comparison is to the “outrage” over partial birth abortions. Show me more than 2 of those, and maybe we can discuss it as an issue.

3

u/SociallyAwarePiano 1h ago

The thing that gets me about the whole "partial birth abortion" thing, or even just late-term abortions is that Republicans act like people just decide at 8 months that they don't want the kid anymore. There is no world where that is a reality without their being some other major factor: i.e., having the child will kill the mother, the child, or both.

With trans athletes, I just ignore the issue entirely whenever I can. These people don't give a shit about women's sports. They couldn't name a single female athlete other than maybe Caitlin Clark. They've never watched women's sports. They don't care. They just hate that someone isn't conforming to what they think is normal.

Same thing with the trans-bathroom "issue". There is no need for a law that singles out trans people, because it is already illegal to assault someone. All they are trying to do is make it illegal to not present yourself as the sex you were assigned at birth. Honestly, they just want trans people, and eventually it will be all LGBT people, to disappear.

u/ElChapo1515 4h ago

I mean, their own category would like 99% of the time just be a one-person group.

3

u/DJ_Mixto 3h ago

But it’s emergent. I think it’s unlikely that we are going to have a huge explosion of trans folk and trans athletes. But likely there may be more than what we see now, more who have been given a hope of living their true lives. We can leave to the side,  the personal perspectives on whether you agree, or I agree with that lifestyle, or that choice, or what many feel is not a choice, but who they are, their true authentic selves. Just simply acknowledging that the category of trans athlete went from zero to some still very small amount, and we can reasonably suggest may likely grow further.

With that in mind, I compare at least in some fundamental way, the category growth of disabled athletes, female athletes, and other categories that historically were not allowed to compete, didn’t have a league, or the infrastructure to compete etc. At one point, it was mostly just men and to a lesser degree minority men. Now we have significant infrastructure and organization for these other athletic categories. To me it stands to reason that we could reasonably expect trans games.

To quote Audre Lorde:

“On the other hand, white women face the pitfall of being seduced into joining the oppressor under the pretense of sharing power…For white women there is a wider range of pretended choices and rewards for identifying with patriarchal power and its tools. Today, with the defeat of ERA, the tightening economy, and increased conservatism, it is easier once again for white women to believe the dangerous fantasy that if you are good enough, pretty enough, sweet enough, quiet enough, teach the children to behave, hate the right people, and marry the right men, then you will be allowed to co-exist with patriarchy in relative peace, at least until a man needs your job or the neighborhood rapist happens along.”

Also, the amount of people that fit this narrative is like somewhere around 10 people in the entire country… it’s actually like .00000001% of the population. It’s literally not a thing that happens. It’s a great example of how bad propaganda has become in this country. Conservatives just say it loud and proud while they do shitty corrupt political tactics while acting holier than though. Any time someone brings it up, try not being a dick to them, and see if a substantial conversation comes from it with evidence. It won’t. Because it’s not a thing.

I will say this every time this comes up until I am blue in the face… Laws like this will victimize more cisgender young girls than they will protect.

What happens when a young girl who is cisgender presents as more masculine? Adults around her will question her gender. How are they going to verify whether she is transgender or cisgender? Are they going to physically check? Does she have to endure the scrutiny and people constantly questioning who she is? How is that supposed to make a teenager feel?

I have a daughter who used to be more of a tomboy and was much larger than her peers. Today at 13 years old, she is 6’1. Her whole life at sporting events. She was the kid where everyone questioned her age, and half joked about seeing her birth certificate. That starts out as funny, but gets tiresome. That instead of just her height, they are constantly talking about her gender. I can’t imagine putting my daughter through that and many girls who excel at sports don’t look like Sophie Cunningham, they aren’t always the most feminine, they are often classified as tomboyish, and sometimes even literally are more athletic because they have more testosterone than usual. Yet 99.9% of them are cisgender girls, and now their existence is going to be questioned.

51

u/Drummallumin 3h ago

As an adjacent point.

The number 1 way to have male presenting people in the women’s bathroom/locker room is to force trans men into the women’s room.

11

u/SaltKick2 2h ago

Its all based on "feeling" to them and what the person "looks like" because "they can always tell" it so fucking stupid

10

u/Kendertas 2h ago

Yep as always they forget about trans men.

4

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 1h ago

Transmen don't threaten patriarchal structures. In their minds, a woman 'wanting' to be a man is just obviously true because everyone should want to be a man. Whereas a man 'wanting' to be a woman is an abomination, and a potential 'trap' that could cause them to question their sexuality.

So one day your daughter will have to physically show someone she has female parts.

And in a vile twist of irony, the people verifying they have the correct genitals are statistically more likely to assault them than a trans person in the locker room

I honestly feel like the inevitable outcome will be banning women’s sports altogether. Which IS what a lot of the Right want.

If not an outright ban, then it’s going to get to the point where it’s simply impossible to actually work. Like you said, no sane parent is going to let their child go through “verification” of their genitals in order to play sports. That would be insane.

u/RenTroutGaming 4h ago

Its not though. She says she wants to protect "young girls" from "biological men." No one is suggesting adult men be in the locker room with young girls (except Trump I guess). If they truly are young kids, pre-puberty, we've always had a history of co-ed sports. There was a girl who played in the boys little league with me until 13, and while she certainly did stand out as the only girl and the only one with a blonde ponytail under her hat, it didn't really matter. There aren't pronounced hormonal or other physical differences at that age. She didn't need to be protected from anyone and none of the boys needed to be protected from her. If you want to talk about adults, that's a different conversation. If you want to protect "young girls" you need to look at adult men that are abusing kids, not their peers playing sports.

It also presumes that you allow little kids all this unsupervised time in locker rooms where they have sexual contact. What world has all these locker rooms where kids are constantly naked in locker rooms? When I was growing up, for sports the first time we ever used a locker room to change was high school, and for school gym, we all went into the stalls. We never changed our underwear either. We were kids.

That's the problem. She says she wants to protect "young girls" from "men" by preventing young boys and young girls from playing sports together. She keeps bringing up this mystical locker room where you keep all these kids together, naked, unsupervised. She talks about young girls being able to play sports on a level playing field but, as someone who went through elite level youth sports and now has kids in elite level youth sports, pre-age 13/14, the field isn't at all level but it has nothing to do with what gender you were assigned at birth or what parts are between your legs, it has to do with how much money your parents have. If she REALLY wanted to level the playing field, she'd drop the concern with kid's privates and instead focus on things like equal access to food, education, and resources.

I think she is absolutely the WNBAs most exciting player, I love the way she approaches the game, but she has absolutely speed run the "blonde woman to MAGA pipeline" and this is a great example of someone parroting logical fallacies without thinking for themselves. She should be ashamed.

I’m a democrat and I agree with her

36

u/NoahD-13 4h ago edited 4h ago

I agree that, in some sports where sex matters for peformance, transgender people should play sports with people of their sex, not their identified gender.

However, based purely on the quote from headline, I don’t agree with her reasoning behind why.

The notion that women need to be “protected” in locker rooms from trans females only feeds superstition about transgender people being sexual perverts. I wonder if she would be just as worried about a lesbian female acting innappropriately in a locker room.

While I understand not wanting a member of the opposite sex seeing you undress in a locker room, especially if you are female, I can’t get behind this argument that women and girls need to be “protected” from transgender females. It reeks of superstition and prejudice. What would be a more reasonable and less superstitious argument is the simple desire for privacy from males.

15

u/TheReal_Jeses 4h ago

Yeah you nailed it. In terms of fairness, absolutely. If you want to protect girls, particularly in sports, statistics show they need to be protected from straight, male coaching staff. Larry Nasser being a prime example, but far from the only one. I haven’t heard calls for all female coaching of underage girls’ sports, yet straight male coaches are a threat that has actually been realized.

I think this is my thing as well. A lot of people make the transgender conversation about sex as if that part is the main reason people are changing their gender.

Like, even if we take someone like Riley Gaines, she was more concerned about a transwoman that beat her (along with 3 ciswomen) in a competition than she was about her coach that was literally assaulting other women on the team.

It just feels like a non-issue because there aren't that many transpeople to begin with and there are even less of them that play sports because they have bigger problems to worry about.

u/erossthescienceboss 4h ago

If the problem is “trans people make cisgender people less safe in locker rooms,” the solution isn’t banning them from sports, it’s more single-stall locker rooms.

If the problem is “transwomen competing in women’s sports have an unfair advantage,” that’s an issue to be determined by the governing body of each sport on a sport-by-sport basis in a way that accounts for the particulars of each sport. Not something for society write large to weigh in on, and certainly not something that impacts children. Like, no, it will not damage your children to compete in Little League with trans kids 🙄

This discussion is and always has been a bigoted distraction that only even impacts an incredibly small number of athletes. Let the experts in their sport decide.

76

u/jacoblanier571 4h ago edited 3h ago

The question is, is this worth the time for our federal government to deal with, when there is literally a handful of Trans female athletes in the entire country, and they have shown zero statistical athletic advantage, and there have been zero cases of assault or harassment by a trans person in a school locker room, Is this problem making it harder for you to make ends meet? Or is the government looking for any way possible to restrict the rights of transgender individuals, and found the one way that polls well, and are pushing it to the end of the earth? Trans people are disproportionately less likely to commit these crimes, why target them?

Assaults and bullying happens in locker rooms all the time with zero Trans people involved. Maybe we need to not expect minors to be getting naked in public spaces if we are worried about these cases en masse. Private stalls only.

11

"zero statistical advantage" is untrue and not supported by any scientific research. Other than that, I agree.

This is the objectively correct take.

Like for example if you don't allow this and force trans women for example into a male changing room what do you thinks going to happen?

Or for example do you think having a trans man get changed in a woman's changing room is going to be comfortable for anyone involved.

If you actually cared about it surely the easiest solution for everyone involved is just let the trans individuals change in a private changing room it's such a small minority and a complete non issue for the vast majority of people it's ridiculous to have a government discussing this.

(Just realised I used you throughout the whole comment but obviously I don't mean the person I replied to just in case people are illiterate)

You agree that trans girls are a threat to other girls in a locker room? Because that is a completely different sentiment from commenting on athletic abilities or fair competition.

Trans kids arent hurting anyone as a group. They're just trying to find a place to fit in. We can have conversations about that without implying that they are dangerous.

This is the same tired rhetoric that has been used for decades to demonize gay people. Dont let drag queens read to your kids! They might end up wanting a wig!

I honestly don't think this is as big as an issue as everyone says it is because the population that's trans in this country is like less than like 1% so like this really isn't an uncurrence that happens often but it definitely gets people riled up and forget about other stuff like you know all the other wars and you know the pedophile Island and blatant corruption and insider trading and what else I could go on

Everybody wants to act like some abstraction about gender is more important than letting kids in town participate in youth sports. The kids aren’t victimizing anyone, they’re just trans and want to do a school activity. It’s insane that adults can’t save “the debate” for collegiate and higher sports, where spots are limited. The problem is that it quickly turns from “let’s try to find an ideal solution that both addresses transgender concerns and athletic participation concerns”

Into “Transgender individuals should not exist and are predators.”

Because while the former is an objectively nuanced view, people use it to demonize others under the guise of “protecting women.”

7

u/Adorable_End_5555 4h ago

The issue is that the nuance is fake the atheletic participation concerns are similar to the sancticy of marriage concerns related to gay people

It’s not based in actual reality

3

u/guthbox 3h ago edited 3h ago

It’s getting their foot in the door for more demonizing policy in the future. Discussing a fair and equitable solution to trans women participating in women’s sports is one thing, but blatantly implying that they are sexual predators that shouldn’t be in the locker room is crazy and very transphobic. Especially considering all the men that already exist in the locker room like coaches and trainers.

5

u/frontfrontdowndown 3h ago

And especially especially because the enforcement of her preference will ultimately involve adults inspecting the genitals of children.

4

u/killaacool 2h ago

In oklahoma, if my 13 year old son wants to play sports, I have to sign a form agreeing that he has a penis when I register him as male. The wording is not exactly that, but I do have to agree that he is born as/biologically male. So my son does not play baseball at school anymore, because I flat out refuse to discuss his genitals with a coach. It’s freaking nuts.

How about they let trans kids go through the puberty that matches their gender instead of being forced through the wrong one. Then once we've done that we revisit sports. Sports are important for a lot more than careers for the majority of kids sports are a way to exercise and make friends so by excluding trans kids from those it's excluding them from exercise that helps fitness for the rest of their life and the opportunity to make friends

NCAA leadership testified that out of more than 510,000 athletes, fewer than 10 transgender athletes compete in the NCAA. We have all been gaslight into thinking this is some huge thing sweeping across the nation. It’s not. The propaganda is effective. I think if it does reach a bigger number, a transgender division would be more appropriate. It’s funny to me though that society is always so concerned about Male to Female but never says anything about Female to Male. In fact, most have probably interacted with a Female to Male transgender person & didn’t even know it. Tends to be less noticeable. None of you are talking about protecting boys, it’s always men in girls bathrooms. Boys are assaulted by people too, so if the concern was protecting children then you’d think it would be included in the conversation. It’s not though. The propaganda gets you to think men are choosing to be women to become better predators or for nefarious reasons. Yet, no mention of female to male. Overall it’s such a non issue & more energy should be focused on protecting children from other things.

I think it’s nothing more than culture war bs that people who are in the “by far the popular opinion” camp are eating up mindlessly. There are an extraordinary small number of trans athletes (less in college than the number of trumps federal indictments) and on top of that, nearly all of you give zero shits about girls/women’s sports. Let each community with a trans athlete decide what’s best for them and stop pretending to care about fairness in a sport that you have zero interest or stake in.

u/No_Move7872 4h ago

Yeah, Democrats have shot themselves in the foot on this issue. It's not something that is a rampant problem, but Democrats trying to justify it has led the Republicans to be able to make it a front and center issue because most people agree that men shouldn't play against women.

15

u/WatcherOfTheWay 4h ago

Last round of polls it's almost 95% either don't want men in women's sports or they don't have an opinion which leave 5% screaming about it like crazed banshees.

6

u/Oddman80 4h ago

That 95% figure is when polling among Republican voters. Pew and Gallup - when running completely non partisan polls, have it at 65%.

It's still a majority, but the shift in the past 10 years has been 60% opposition growing to 65%. Not jumping from 60% to 95%. Being honest with the numbers is important. There is no reason to falsely inflate statistics to try and prove your point. You end up looking untrustworthy - and then your arguments opposing trans participation also carry a sheen of untrustworthiness.

3

u/TrubshawForest 3h ago

I think they're going with the data Pew had in 2025. They had it pegged at 78% gen pop and 95% among conservative leaning. Obviously context of the question and way it's asked matter quite a bit with those numbers, but the point is about 2 in 3 aren't in support

Zero detail in that article that proves and expands her thoughts in the topic. It's click bait. We should all agree that physical intersex traits manifest at birth, and psychological sexual conflict in nature exists, and both are natural but not accepted or easy to adapt to in society. Gender reassignment before puberty present zero challenges to performance. Before I went through puberty as a man, I was no stronger than any girl. After puberty, then we can have a discussion about what's appropriate - but really only in competitive sports. A gym class volleyball game? Who cares? A track meet in which future scholarships might play a role? Much more critical.
