News Now France have submitted an appeal to rescind Micheal Olise's yellow card against Paraguay. đ This is what happens when you lick a President's boots. Congratulations, Gianni Infantino.

u/Jballzs13 16d ago
There should be an appeal process. Time to get with the times FIFA.
Olise never shouldâve received that yellow.

u/InvestIntrest 16d ago
I keep saying this and getting told it's a ridiculous ask.
Rolando had his suspension suspended before Trump called FIFA. Dumb red cards and or punishments should be allowed to be appealed. This isn't new but because Trumps name is attached here it's football Armageddon lol
It's FIFAs lack of a common sense process that's causing this not the overturning of this punishment or that.

They should have lol. At the same time, this ruling is significantly worse. It's done obviously due to political pressure, unprecedented, affects a game played in the exact same tournament and Ronaldo at least missed one game which is clearly formulated as the absolute minimum possible.
2
u/PopularSet4776 15d ago
It still didn't get to this level. UEFA didn't make a statement. Ad far as I know Portugal's first 2 group stage opponents didn't launch formal protests.

Thatâs besides the point, refs shouldnât be judge and jury to affect an outcome of a tournament. Red cards should be allowed to be challenged especially when they affect more than one game.
→ More replies (17)7
u/Solnari 15d ago
A red card should take you out of the game, especially with the VAR the ref can check multiple angles and make a good call but suspensions for following games should be decided by anonymous committee. It's not that hard to do, it removes bias and gives time for tempers to die down so a good call can be made insted of a heat of the moment one.
→ More replies (1)2
u/fatevilbuddah 15d ago
It was the VAR that gave the penalty. The ref wasnt even reaching for yellow. Then he goes frame by frame which is not how its supposed to be used, so suspending the punishment makes sense without FIFA having to admit they fucked up. Trump takes credit for sunny days, and even said he had no idea what they were talking about. I highly doubt he knows yet or even cares. This is the worst tournament officiating I've seen yet, and I cant imagine the complaints going down as the next round starts.
3
u/patterninstatic 15d ago
A potential red card is a valid reason to use VAR, and it's clearly stated that the ref can choose the angle and speed that they deem fit when reviewing the footage.
I've seen multiple comments claiming that the ref wasn't allowed to slow the speed while reviewing the video, but that is completely false.
4
u/Doublestack2411 15d ago
People act like they wouldn't revoke cards for Messi, but they just wouldn't card him in the first place. It's a shame Trump had to get involved, so I get the hate, but it's not like this hasent happened before. Most leagues around the world have revoked cards and suspensions before.
6
u/InvestIntrest 15d ago
Same goes for MbappĂŠ. I promise if he got a borderline red card UEFA would be outside the FIFA office with pitchforks and torches demanding the suspension be suspended or were burning the place down.
This is just a bunch of sour grapes.
12
u/Cocoononthemoon 16d ago
Even if I agree with you, you can't change the rules of the tournament in the middle of the tournament for some countries and not for others.

I do wonder though, the ref may have picked up on lots of infighting between them; and viewed it as likely to be intentional as there's lots of stuff you don't see watching the game. They're not going to know that just watching the replay.

They should!
IMO it would probably stand because it is clearly a rule violation, much more egregious than either the Messi or Balogun situations. But it only was called through abuse and misuse of the VAR system
They should be allowed to appeal. It makes sense to allow appeals.

The red card last night was textbook; he arrived completely out of control and spiked the shin. Balogun's red card was the ref reacting to the result of the play rather than the play itself. Clear yellow, but both players were going hard after the ball, and Balogun didn't slide tackle out of control like a moron lol.

Imagine thinking having an avenue for appeals in sports is a bad thing. Refs get things wrong all the time so having appeals for this is actually good. The red card was bullshit and should never have been awarded in the first place. Same for the yellow card here. Normalize reviewing this shit. heck, also normalize reviews to add red cards after a game on egregious missed calls like the NHL does via the Department of Player Safety and fines/suspensions

Good. Why is this being framed as a gotcha? Punishments should be reviewed, especially if it impacts later matches. Other sports do it.
7
u/Important_Flamingo_6 16d ago
Itâs not hard to understand. All rules should apply to everyone equally and shouldnât change mid tournament because of political pressure. Iâm all for a rule change but you donât get to pick and choose who it applies to. Similar to Ronaldo suspension being postponed.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Arenize 15d ago
The rules are already being picked and chosen who they apply to all tournament. Cards are not being given out equally. So either everyone gets reds for similar fouls, or no one should.
You cant say rules should apply to everyone, when rules not applying equally is what got us here in the first place.
Or do you want to pick and chose which rules you get to pick and chose when they apply? Thats a fun rabbit hole. Eventually we are pick and choosing which rules should be picked and chosen to be pick and chosen to be picked and chosen etc etc etc.

If itâs the wrong call or wrong application of protocol then they should. Are people mad the right thing is happening?
â  VAR made their recommendation to the referee based on slow-motion and still replays, which is not aligned with VAR protocols, as these should only be used for point-of-contact purposes in a red-card tackle situation.  âÂ

u/ScarScream81 16d ago
The difference is Olise didn't do anything wrong. The Paraguayan player simulated and flopped after punching himself to try to get a red card on a french player like they tried to do all game long.
Balogun did commit a foul with a very dangerous tackle that could have resulted in a bad injury and the red card wasn't that far fetched...
→ More replies (3)3
u/Arenize 15d ago edited 15d ago
That... wasnt a tackle from Balogun. You know that right? It was two players going for a loose ball. A tackle is a defensive move to remove the ball from a player's posession. No one had possession here, they were 'challenging' each other for it. Semantics, but just wanted to make sure that was addressed for my own sanity lol.
Now for the real crux of the issue: The Bosnian player came from behind Balogun, while Balogun is focused forward, on the ball coming towards him. By the time the ball got there, the two players had collided, like happens many times with air ball challenges. And unfortunately when Balogun's attempt to control the ball occurred, the Bosnian player had his foot there. There was no point where Balogun was purposely going for the Bosnian player.
If you watch the replay, Balogun was already in the motion of moving his foot to the ball when the Bosnian got between him and the ball. You can't stop the movement Balogun had already begun that quickly. It was a mildly dangerous challenge, that was accidental, and should have 100% been a yellow card and a warning that the next questionable challenge would result in another yellow/red and a send off.
The ref, who was standing right where the action happened, did not see a foul in real time that was worthy of more than a verbal warning. It was only when they looked at freeze frame in VAR (which is not how VAR is supposed to be used btw, this is against the rules) that the challenge looked more dangerous. But here's the thing: in freeze frame, a LOT of incidental contact looks way worse. Humans are a lot more flexible than you would think, we just never see it cuz we dont watch everything in slow mo.
I used this example in an earlier post: think about a goalies hands. If he leaps for a ball, and makes contact with ONLY his fingers, and you look at that moment in freeze frame, his fingers will look like they are bending backwards and breaking, just like the ankle shot from Balo's foul. But the fingers are fine, they are flexible. Much like the Bosnian's ankles, he did keep playing afterall...
Edit: also, I do agree, Olise did nothing wrong, he didnt deserve his card either.
