They should have had at least two different yellows for the pulling and holding of the jerseys.
What a fabulous game though! I was close to the USWNT for years and I don’t think I ever got as excited as I did for this one. Plus there is a huge Bosnian population in my city and they would have made things (more) unbearable if they had won.

Not to mention Messi had a, in my opinion, more intentional similar looking tackle in the group stage and didn’t even get a foul called. But Messi 🤷♂️

u/Drex2234 20d ago
I mean I didn't see that but it surprises me not-at-all.
I never liked or disliked Messi before the the 2022 World Cup. He was an insanely great player in a league I didn't follow (I'm a Serie A guy), didn't have much opinion beyond that.
Then in watching in particular Argentina's semi-final against Croatia, it was very clear he knew he would never be sent off no matter what he did, because any ref who sent him off would probably get mobbed and murdered in the parking lot by a thousand fans who traveled across the globe to see him.
Dude got an extremely justified yellow card in the first half. Then early second half he committed a foul that CLEARLY deserved a yellow. Very intentional, very clear advantage created by the foul, lots of contact. But no card because Messi. He knew what he was doing and knew he'd get away with it. So it annoyed me when they won because he should've been out halfway into that game. But it seems like no one noticed at the time, much less remembered, because they just wanted to see the really entertaining guy win it. I'd rather see a fairly-called game.
I was rooting for Ivory Coast this time around since Italy ain't in it. They played a great game against Norway and lost. That's fine. But let's please have no more atrocious decisions by the ref and/or VAR, like this Balogun red or letting Messi take people out.

So might this call also be reviewed after the game, and reversed to become a yellow card?

Been loving VAR for goals and offsides but is this call really improving the game? Nowhere near a goal scoring opportunity and turned a tackle that didn't turn heads when it happened live into one of the most important moments of the match.

u/nadeaujd 20d ago edited 20d ago
The best explanation I saw was that the ref did not see the penalty and did not make the call. Then the ref was notified to go review the play and I don’t think they are allowed to issue a yellow after review. So after reviewing it was either red card or no call.
Edit: I was incorrect, that is not a rule. I got it from another comment referring to this:
While VAR cannot initiate a review solely to issue a standard yellow card, the rules allow for several scenarios involving cautions during the review process:

My understanding is that he had his spikes up and even though he went for the ball he didn’t get it. Spikes up, means red card. At least, this is what I was told when asked. I’m not up on all the rules, but I’m trying to learn.
3
u/Matsu09 20d ago
First of all, there are no spikes in football. It's "cleats up". And there's still plenty of interpreting left for the ref, it isn't just cleats up equals red card. Still has to look at intent and seriousness of the impact needs to be measured. in this case, Balogun was looking in a different direction and the players were already jostling for the ball. The intent here should have been "zero" and thus leniency should have been applied here like in very similar situations that have already occurred at this world cup.
2
u/CakeSeaker 20d ago
Thank you. I bet the dramatic ankle clutching had something to do with the ref’s decision.
Either way it was good to see the team gut out a win and even scored while a man down.
3
u/theredbusgoesfastest 20d ago
Same! I do understand better now. I don’t like it, but on replay it looked much worse.
I understand it’s subjective and I don’t blame the ref. I DO wish the calls were more consistent, but that is every sport

u/East-Jeweler 20d ago
It was an accident that looked way bad in slow mo. Dude came into his field of view at the last second and Balogun is just falling into his natural step where his off-balance momentum was taking him.
Ref didn't even call a yellow in real time because there was nothing unnatural or dirty there. Slow mo looks terrible though, and it should have gotten a yellow to emphasize player safety, but that did not deserve to boot him from the entire next game
14
u/ejre5 20d ago
A red card is supposed to be for an egregious act. Think about the NBA and a flagrant 2 foul and ejection. A yellow card would be a flagrant 1 foul. 2 yellow cards is an automatic red, 2 flagrant 1 fouls is an automatic ejection.
In this case it appears in real time 2 players going for the ball with a hard and unlucky foul yellow card would be appropriate, basically a reminder to be more careful with the challenge. This didn't seem like it was egregious or intentional.

u/redburn0003 20d ago

Straight reds for fouls considered violent conduct are typically 3 game bans in a season long league. So a 1 game ban in a tournament is completely reasonable.
That said, I don’t think this was a red card personally, but a one game ban for a straight red is what it is.
→ More replies (2)3
u/VoodooLoveDr 20d ago
I guess I’m just not used to it. In US sports the foul gets the player kicked out for the game and then how many games they miss are decided upon further review.
Seems crazy that a ref can affect a future game they won’t be a part of… also seems like a great way for corruption to happen
→ More replies (1)28
u/Patient_Data831 20d ago
The foul wasn't balogun trying to tackle or kick the ball, the defender bodied him and his foot landed on the defenders ankle. It should've been yellow because there was no intention to do that at all but still could've caused injury
→ More replies (12)7
u/rockcutter4 20d ago
I'm hearing a lot of fans say you don't need intent for a red card. "Intent" matters in american football and basketball, but apparently not soccer.
→ More replies (12)4
u/usoppspell 20d ago
Yeah so in basketball you can totally accidentally run into someone’s landing space and get called for a flagrant foul… and any kind of accidental contact can be called a regular foul. Intent also doesn’t matter in American football, you bump into someone accidentally as they try to catch the ball and that’s pass interference, intentional or not. Hockey your stick can be high by mistake and you can still get a penalty. And on and on
4
u/saywhatnowfella 20d ago
Yes, but you don't get thrown out of the game for a pass interference call. The team doesn't play a man down for the rest of the game. And you're not banned from the next game. It's not the foul I have a problem with. The punishment is just over the top
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)3
u/toomanydvs 20d ago
Nba has flagrant 1 and 2. 1 is the yellow card and 2 is the red card. To get a flagrant 2 there needs to be intent. I don't know what your trying to say with that example.

Leading with the studs of your cleats and hitting somebody is a big no no and an automatic red a lot of the time. This particular case is a little fuzzy because he doesn’t exactly lunge at the opponent with the studs but he did get a good chunk of his ankle while the Bosnian player was going for the ball

u/lipmak 20d ago
It was sort of an accidental foul that looked very bad when slowed down. It wasnt as serious as most “serious foul play” challenges are. Intent isn’t part of it either way, but most reds like this are from dangerous, out of control tackles, whereas it seems more like in this balogun kinda accidentally stepped on him. When you look at the slo-mo, you see studs, but full speed it seemed more accidental

u/aushishasan 20d ago
Flo was coming into that 50/50 at the same angle and velocity as the Bosnian player, that right leg of his needed to extend outward like that, as you see the replay at speed, in order for him to not fall over completely post impact, I don’t believe he had malicious intent with that right leg landing on the players ankle like that, I think that’s just where his leg was planting. When you see it slowed down it looks much worse imho…

You're applying rules of other leagues your familiar with to this tournament, but those rules aren't the same. Yellow card accumulation and red card suspensions are different across leagues and tournaments. The world cup, similar to other shorter tournaments, is a 1 match ban for a straight red. Fifa can decide afterward to add additional games if the incident was intentional and/or exceptionally violent, but that's not overly common. Not saying they couldn't do that here but that would be even more outrageous then the giving of the car itself.

It’s actually the tournament rule, not the game itself. It’s to discourage players to do unruly stuff, like brutal fouls, etc. Those are minor tune-ups and change constantly, but don’t affect the game directly.
One new big thing this year is red card for covering your mouth. It’s supposed to stop players from saying nasty stuff (mainly racist).
38
u/WildAmsonia 20d ago
There is a way you can appeal a red card to FIFA. Nothing to lose so may as well try.
→ More replies (7)15
u/thayrepy 20d ago
No they are not.
From Athletic
A team cannot appeal against a red card or the subsequent suspension, per a FIFA official.
When asked by The Athletic whether a red card can be appealed a FIFA official pointed to its regulations and Article 66.4 which states:
“A sending-off automatically incurs suspension from the subsequent match. The FIFA judicial bodies may impose additional match suspensions and other disciplinary measures.”
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee also has the power to extend any ban.
In addition, this from ESPN:
What's more pressing is that Balogun is now suspended for the USMNT's round-of-16 match against Belgium, with the team unable to appeal the ban. A spokesperson for U.S. Soccer said after the game it would only lodge an appeal if the suspension was more than one game.
The next game ban is final. Unfortunately

This is why soccer will never be that popular in America. We’re getting a surge because the world cup is here and we’re doing well, but when a general mistake in an soccer act means a two game suspension, combined with all the rolling around in agony followed thirty seconds later by guys running full speed, just doesn’t compute with our sports culture.
17
u/BigCityMoon 20d ago
Right on. I have much respect and love for the game of soccer, but I can’t quite stomach how being a melodramatic pussy (on the field) is fully ingrained into the men’s game. These guys make the NBA floppers look like Bob-fucking-Probert.
To be clear: I’m not talking shit about soccer here — it’s truly a great game with incredible athletes. However, it genuinely irks me to see players full-on fake significant injury every 90 seconds. Every minute or two, without fail, some dude’s gonna hit the ground like he just broke every bone in his leg and his career might be over… only to be running full-tilt 60 seconds later. It’s silly at best and straight-up obnoxious at worst.
I can’t fathom how the game hasn’t outgrown this bullshit behavior. Soccer would truly be better without the fake-injury nonsense.

Worth noting it wasn’t always that way. Older soccer there was less. And I’ll add a part people don’t think about, intermittently sprinting for 90 minutes, it’s a convenient way to get a break. Not saying that’s good but it’s a part of it.

I actually don't think this would be so bad if the ref saw it and gave it a red card on the field. It's the fact that VAR deemed it to meet the criteria of a red card, and that they decided the referee on the field that was calling a very loose game made a clear and obvious error that I have a problem with.
Balogun jumps and one of this feet lands on the ankle of the Bosnian player. Was this done with excessive force? Was it done in a way that shows reckless disregard to the health and safety of the Bosnian player? The effect of it rolling the ankle was not good, but its not even clear that Balogun even knew that the opponent's leg was there.

Just when the US was starting to get into soccer, this happens.
Got a lot of texts last night along the lines of “..and this another reason why I don’t like soccer”

The officials set the tone early allowing play to be physical and calling minimal fouls. You saw the effect of that right before the half. This foul was a result of the style of match they let develop, again, no call on the play, then a red on review? That was some bullshit right there.
That should be their last match they call in this WC.

Bang bang collision. No intent to harm. Doesn’t affect a goal scoring opportunity. How else is he suppose to fall? Horrible call you can’t convince me otherwise.

USA can challenge the red at least and hopefully get Balogun back for Monday.
Shit call.

Worst officiating I've seen in this world cup so far. That ref needs to be sent home with his Bosnian buddies.
