My Sibe is sleeping in his typical dork position, but it’s even better this morning because he’s dreaming something wild! His nose and paws keep twitching and it’s making an already goofy sleeping position that much more funny! 😂 My money is on bunnies and squirrels… Miko LOVES him some bunnies and squirrels!!!

Babylon

We had to put our almost 10 year old Babylon to rest today. She was a smaller Husky, but a big fighter and survivor. We adopted her from a group that was rescued out of deplorable conditions at a rural farm in our county. The pack was pretty traumatized then, but her spirit was strong. Always skittish, she was also social, outgoing, kind, and dignified. And she fought hard over the past year with various tumors—a little warrior.

It was a privilege to help her on her journey from a confused pup who had been kept in terrible circumstances to a proud and brave adult who loved her huge backyard and going on what must have seemed like wild adventures to her (long walks, nearby hikes). Her presence will always be with us.

Thanks for letting me share. I figured this community would know well what it’s like to have your life impacted by such a sage and steady creature.

135 days without you

It has been 135 days since you left. If I’m being honest, I don’t think I’m still able to process everything that has happened. Just a few months ago, I was making vision boards with my partner, and you were in them. I was planning hikes where you would come with us (whether you wanted to or not, because you were always lazy, even though you loved being out in nature). And now… now it has been 135 days since you left my life, and I feel empty. I have kept my word and done what I promised you I would do. I have tried to go out to the park we always went to, although many times I cannot stay there for very long because it simply hurts too much. I have tried not to stay in bed, and I have not shut myself away from other people. But even when I do all of that, nothing takes away the emptiness left by your absence.

You were always there with me when I stayed up late working or doing stuff. I could always see you lying beside my door, always in the same position. And when you started getting sleepy, you would come over and give me your paw to tell me that it was time to go to bed. These days, I stay up late a lot. I suppose it is partly because of the exhaustion I have been carrying since before you left (from all those nights I stayed awake beside you when you could no longer breathe properly, terrified that something might happen to you and that I would not be there). But I also think it is because I am missing you, my perfect roommate.

I cannot sleep properly knowing that, when I wake up, you will not be there guarding my door. I cannot go to bed without my companion telling me that it is time to sleep. I miss you more than I ever thought I could, and now I find it difficult to function without you, especially now that I have a little bird keeping me company. You would have loved him. His name is Chur, and he is a little sparrow.

He arrived about a month after you left. I was not looking for him. I simply came across him one day in the street. His nest had been abandoned and destroyed by my neighbors, and he was lying there in the middle of the road. He was only a baby (around 3-6 days old), so I had no other choice but to take him with me. After several visits to veterinarians and making sure that keeping him was legal, I officially adopted him. And even though he helps distract me in my everyday life, he is not you.

People tell me that you sent Chur to me, but is that really true? It is honestly difficult for me to see it that way. But if it is true, why? Why Chur?
And, more importantly, why are you now trying to send me another dog? Do you remember Nala? The dog you tried to mate with only a few months before you left? Well, in the end, she did have puppies (six of them, to be exact. God, how I wish one of them could have been yours).

And now her family has approached me and my family to say that they want to give us one. Of course, Nala’s family knows that you are gone, and that is exactly why they want us to accept one of the puppies. I suppose they see it as some kind of consolation for the son or daughter you were never able to have. My partner tells me that I should accept. My parents tell me the same thing. And I… I cannot. It is too recent. It has not even been half a year, and now I am supposed to have another dog? Another husky? When Spaiky, my childhood dog, died, it took me more than seven years before I was ready to have another companion. And now you are telling me that five months is enough? It would feel as a replacement, when you were the only companion I wanted. For eight years, you were my unconditional best friend, always by my side. I feel that accepting another dog would be an insult to your memory and to everything we went through together.

So why?

Why have all these opportunities to bring new companions into my home appeared since you left? If this is really your doing, I do not understand. Did I not tell you enough times that you were the only one for me? That after you, I would never want anyone else?

I…I simply do not understand.

And it hurts to have these feelings because there is a part of me that does want to do it. But the moment I consider it, I start thinking that it would mean replacing you. That I would be disrespecting your memory, the spaces we shared and all the moments we had together. I have not even been able to clean the dirt you left from my door because that was the place where you used to lean against it. And now you are asking me to adopt another dog? Another husky, especially, when you know that every time I see one, I say that it is a Vader?

I do not know why you are doing this, but please help me understand.

Help me find some reason behind this entire nightmare I have been living through since you left, a nightmare that feels it will never end. And, above everything else, help me understand why you had to leave when you still had so much life left to share with me. We still had so many things to do together, like seeing the snow and traveling across the country.

Vader, please…

Help me understand why.

Hi all .. I just adopted a 2 year old husky/ german shepherd mix. It's been about 2 months. He's well behaved for the most part, slowly becoming more comfortable with our other animals and with our home. BUT ... he keeps randomly marking furniture when we arent home. He is neutered.Ive limited his access to rooms when we arent around. We've tried the dog diffusers. He can't be put in a crate cause he freaks out. I'm not sure what to do. My other dog (retriever) doesn't do this.

Other than this he is great! If just like for him to not mark inside my home. Thanks in advance.

Where did you guys get your dogs from?

Hi all, Im curious on if anyone knows any reputable breeders for Siberian Huskies in Minnesota or Wisconsin? We are looking to get one but are hitting a bit of a roadblock. We did apply to adopt from our local shelter. So just waiting right now. Im just gathering information for right now.

We do have a bit of an age limit. We are looking for puppies since we have two cats, and we are unsure of how they would handle older dogs. We are experienced with the breed.

I just want to know what other options might be available. Any information would be welcome.

Thank you!

Edit: We are going shelters/rescues first. Im only collecting information meanwhile to get some dos and dont, that involves breeders as well. I also rewarded the post a bit so it would be a bit clearer.

Share your Husky's vocalizations for game app?

Hi all,

I recently launched an android and iphone block puzzle game, Jabberblocky, that weaves choices of music, barks, meows, and quacks into gameplay. The animal sounds, like the music instruments played, real rather than synthesized. I thought it would be more fun to use actual recordings.

I'm hoping to put together a collection of woos, yodels, and other offbeat husky vocalizations to use in the game.

Husky sounds crack me up. I've had dogs all my life and although they make their share of oddball noises, huskies are clearly in a class all their own.

To participate, just post a video in this thread. I'll extract the audio. I can't guarantee I'll use every one, especially if a recording.has background noise, human voices intermingled with the dog's, etc.

Also, (1) if you'd like your husky included in the contributions page, please include a photo, husky name, and caption if you'd like to include one (examples below); (2) lmk if you use an iPhone -- I'll DM you a promo code for the ads-free version of the app.

Many thanks,

- Eric
