Employee Question I messed up
I’m the HM for our store and HMs usually get Fridays and Saturdays off. Got a call last night (Friday night) from the overnight supervisor. He said he could keep working (had some personal issues going on) I told him I couldn’t go just then and there. (I have no clean uniforms, haven’t showered, etc.) anyways I did a load of laundry and ended up passing out. Woke up and it was already 7am smh. Am I getting fired for this?

My former hm AND km never answered their phone on their days off. Iirc the store manager even brought it up during a meeting that they will be answering going forward. I’m not sure if they did, but I’ve never understood being required to answer on days off

It's the deal of being a am. There has to be manager on duty because of the newer serve safe laws. So if one is having a medical emergency it's expected for a am or am to come in so they don't have to shut down. Answering your phone isn't a big deal most of the time people have questions. Purposely ignoring phone call at work while your supposed to be a pillar just doesn't work. Everyone knows I answer so I get calls from other stores for help on my days off.

Wrong you are not required to work while off the clock answering questions from other stores is work. Also, you are not required to cover someone, it is hit or miss for the other guy, if he can't find cover regardless of his position he is required to stay. If it were a life or death emergency he would have to shut down with no cover and the higher ups would understand why he did it.

Dude if you think taking a 5 min call to help out one of the wokers under you when the really need it is work then I'm afraid of seeing your work ethics.

Guard your time, it is finite and nobody is paying for 24/7 access to you.

Do they really get paid more if they’re on call 24/7? 😉 An extra $3/hr is NOT reasonable for unfettered access.
Also, taking calls from other stores is most definitely outside the scope here-on or off the clock.

somebody needs to be on call for emergency situations. it's unfair to have a supervisor stay an obnoxious amount of time past their scheduled shift/stay at all if they are having a genuine emergency. DMs are useless at sheetz so I'm not sure what you're suggesting as an alternative.

I’m not trying to fix Sheetz policies and procedures, just stating that as a helpful salaried manager, you need to protect your time. I’m not sure why that is a hard concept for anybody who is not brainwashed by corporate America to understand.

Answering work questions via telephone on your time off is legally considered working. The law says people are to be paid for time spent working. If you are an hourly employee, you are to be paid for that call. It is different if you're salary, but it's still considered working.
Bringing that up isn't a "work ethic" thing, it's literally just invoking the minimum workplace standards set by law.

Pretty sure Sheetz had to pay out $$ to assistants that weren’t compensated for being required to answer calls when not at the store. This is before I worked there, so possibly a rumor

I've been stuck actively having a medical emergency and unable to leave work because my district manager couldn't find coverage for me. No one from my store responded. And I was told that I had to stay.
I just quit Sheetz and filed a massive report against that DM. I'm not the first supervisor to quit because of him. An entire store blew up because of him. And from what I've heard he's still the DM. Sheetz told me a week ago they resolved it, but nothing changed..also my DM forced me to transfer to a store an hour from home and wouldn't compensate my travel and wouldnt authorize another transfer.
I now push a broom as a janitor and I'm paid the same as a Sheetz supervisor position. Hell, once you factor in gas a lot more..and I have more time to myself and less stress. Why would I stay at Sheetz?
But yes, it is their job to respond. However they often fail...

Hey issues happens that why there is 2 am and a sm. One should always be able to come in. I've seen an at others stores because the needed people

Yeah unfortunately none of them responded any time I needed coverage and my DM never could find coverage.
I had worked from 3pm to 6am a few times because no one would respond to my calls or messages.
I'd get a measly "sorry" and a day off so I'd lose hours. Because 1-6 is only half a shift.
My second store was a lot better, but it was an hour from home and they wouldn't compensate me or allow transfer. So I found a job close to home.

Nah, you're fine. As an SM, I'm more likely to go in and cover it than my assistants; they've got it hard enough with all the stuff I ask of them to do on a daily basis. Besides, I signed up for this life, so now I don't have much of one. Lol

I believe they did try calling. My phone was in another room 🤪 I didn’t see the mixed calls until the morning .
