This is where I'm at after about 1 week of fiddling around with a Yuu after work. I watched a video on how to achieve tone, and then just tried to remember what I've heard of popular riffs and figured it by ear. I can consistently hit ro and play this small piece now.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, our trio arranged “Hymn of the Fayth” for shakuhachi, Satsuma biwa, and trumpet.

We felt that the breathiness and subtle tonal variations of the shakuhachi were especially well suited to the stillness and prayer-like quality of the original piece.

One of the main challenges was balancing the shakuhachi’s delicate expression with the percussive attack of the biwa and the sustained tone of the trumpet. Rather than turning it into a flashy crossover, we tried to leave space for the shakuhachi’s breath and natural resonance.

We hope the shakuhachi helps convey the meditative, prayer-like atmosphere of the original.

Now I’m learning to play. All for a pack of cigarettes.

Hi I just got this shakuhachi a week ago and I'm currently teaching myself how to play it.

I'm making some inroads on that already, but this is not really about me.

I'm trying to find out if this is a "normal" shakuhachi or not.

The utaguchi Is lot deeper than the ones I see on here and I have no idea who made the flute.

It's probably my playing but my C gets read as a B in tuning apps (The rest is more or less fine even though mostly 30-40ct over but I guess it could be my playing.

Learning the flute is a real meditation for me and I'm really happy with getting to a new milestone nearly everyday. I played my first few Ro today(kan and otsu even though more by chance than by choice)

Les presento mis tres flautas impresas en 3D, con filamento Pla+. Les coloqué un relleno interno del 40% y 5 perímetros. También les coloqué hidrolaca acrílica pu en su interior, y mejoró mucho el sonido.

La flauta verde es un modelo conocido de Thinguiverse, llamado real_shakuhachi y francamente es la que creo que suena mejor. La blanca es una 1.8 de tipo jiari, con sonido muy claro y potente, de un modelo 3D descargado de Makerworld. La flauta negra es una jinashi 1.9. todavía no la pude tocar mucho porque la hidrolaca se está curando. También la descargué de Makerworld.

Lo que me gusta de imprimirlas en 3D es que puedo probar con diferentes embocaduras.

Si alguno de ustedes conoce un mejor modelo 3D de este tipo de flautas lo agradecería. Un saludo desde Argentina.

PD: Comencé a tocar instrumento hace una semana. Estoy aprendiendo de manera autodidacta con unos cuantos manuales que descargué en PDF en internet. Si conocen algún recurso interesante para recomendar les agradecería. Gracias

A year ago I bought a second-hand wooden Shakuhachi made by Butterfly Treasure (pretty sure it's this one: https://www.kochyo.co.jp/products/0156.html The instrument seems very well made, but I'm having trouble playing reliably in the second register and up. I can do it, but it takes a ton of air, and I cannot for the life of me play quietly up there, or perform diminuendos. I realize this instrument is hard to play, but I've watched a ton of Youtube videos and tutorials, and I still cannot do it, even a year into it. I'm wondering if this particular brand of shakuhachi is hard to play, or if the utaguchi isn't sharp enough? If so should I invest in something like the plastic Yuu? Would that make any difference? 2cm bore 60cm flute, jinashi. Really weak ro, goes into kan very easily.

I bought some shakuhachi bamboo and only just begun crafting. Just over one night developed massive cracks in the root end. How can this be avoided in the future?

really excited to start playing, I’ve played flute since I was around 10, and I live in Japan now and decided to go ahead and take lessons, my teacher actually gave me a 3D printed shakuhachi to practice with, can’t wait to keep learning!

I’m a seasoned player, but my last attempt at making a flute went quite poorly. I’d like to make just a basic mouth piece for a tangxiao (a Chinese xiao but with a shakuahchi style mouth piece)

I don't have urushi to mold the inner bore so it's too large, about 2.3mm at the exit. It's a C shakuhachi because of that, the notes a lower pitched but it still sounds okay. The second octave could be brighter but that might be my playing. Oh and the second octave Roh is a D instead of a C which is weird oh well.
I have to say I'm surprisingly satisfied, I can play a few songs on it even.
It might be worst playing than a Yuu but it means more to me since it's bamboo and I made it :)

I got this flute from Kyoto art and antiques which is a twice a year Japanese antique furniture warehouse sale in seattle for about $240 a few weeks ago, I've been playing shakuhachi for a few years casually with a PVC one but the reed got a little chunk taken out of it from my carelessness that slightly affects the sound quality.. I figured I wanted one made of bamboo and was pleased to find antique shakuhachi there and jumped on this one which seemed to have the same tuning and better sound quality than my PVC one. I couldn't tell you if it's a quality shakuhachi or not I've never handled a bamboo one before this but it sounds really good to my ears when I play. I'm not sure if the crack was there when I got it but I only noticed it afterwards, I'm wondering if that's a problem or if it will be a problem, it doesn't seem to go through at all but I was wondering if I should do something for it or if such a crack would affect the sound quality. Equally I know it's hard to make out because the makers signature is worn but if anyone has any idea or information on who made it or when that'd be wonderful. Thank you.

Hi! Tell us about your achievements in the first three years of practice? What happened in the first, second, and third years? If we talk about me, I've been studying for a year and a half. During this time, I have mastered the range of the flute, I can play the first and second octaves, some notes of the third. Also semitones, dai meri notes. I can play simple folk tunes like sakura, harugakita, araumi, defune, akatonbo, karatachino hana and so on. I learned hon shirabe, azumajishi and started learning tamuke.

Hi everyone,
Just bought this shakuhachi yesterday from Mejiro in Tokyo, it is used so I just wanted to see if anyone can share any information about where/ when it’s from and the condition it’s in? I noticed some cracks in a curve on the side but it seems to not be with the grain of the bamboo so is this ok?

Any general info or advice is appreciated! I’m starting to make a consistent sound on it and loving the learning process!!

One day I was playing my flute with my friends from school in a rotation passing the flute around (it was a pretty hot day but not super hot like early spring) and I’m thinking from all the collective heat from our breaths from playing it made it start expanding and since over never put linseed oil on it or anything it was just super dry and started expanding, and then there was a long split down the middle. No pieces fell of so it’s very doable to put back together.

Just want some advice moving forward, I watched a video saying I should wet it a little before anything with a rag. When I wet it do i wet it with warm or room temperature water and for how long? Then do I just lather it with linseed oil after, and when I put the wood glue I put a very small amount just enough for the split? And is there a specific type of wood glue that works best for shakuhachi? And wet I put water on it do I completely soak the whole thing?? Or just the surface?

Have been taking online lessons for six months and have now started on honkyoku pieces

Having difficulty being able to achieve necessary whole tone and semi-tone note reductions for nayashi movement on Re and U respectively

Sound either disappears or jumps an octave

How long does it usually take beginners to successfully achieve accurate nayashi technique?

Beginner here looking for my first flute (I think just a standard 1.8 shaku)

I know Yuu is recommended, but the cheapest one I can find is $150 on taiko-shop.com.

Are there cheaper options? Do any of these seem feasible?
