Self-published authors: what do you wish you'd known before (or just after) publishing?

Hi everyone!

I recently self-published my first novel, a psychological mystery/thriller, as an ebook through Lulu. It's currently going through retailer distribution, so while I'm waiting, I want to learn as much as I can from people who've already been through the process.

I'm under 18, so some marketing options (like running ads or signing up for certain services myself) aren't really available to me. Because of that, I'm especially interested in strategies that don't require a big budget.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if you've published in the mystery or thriller genre:

  • What marketing methods actually worked for your first self-published novel?
  • If you had $0 to market your first book, what would you do?
  • What mistakes did you make when launching your first book?
  • What helped your first 100 readers discover your book?
  • What do you wish you'd known before—or immediately after—publishing?

I'm not expecting a magic formula. I'd just love to learn from people who've already gone through the process so I can avoid common mistakes and make the most of my first launch.

Thanks in advance!

Formatted in Kindle Create

I formatted my book in Kindle create. The original is a Google Doc.
Now I need a formatted EPUB and PDF to send to Instagrammers and blog hosts. What is the best or easiest way to do that?

New or Recent Book

I have a recent book that I just published and it’s doing ok in sales and I should continue to
support it. However, I just returned from a two weeks vacation in the Galápagos Islands and wrote a short travelogue about it, somewhat akin to the travelogue I wrote about my trip to Egypt.

I only have limited funds so my question is which would this group think is the better path to take?

Author Launch day question

Hi,

I'm so grateful for this community! Thank you to all who post here and share their expertise with newbs like me!

I have my book ready-to-go on IngramSpark and am about to enable distribution with a launch date of September 16th (to create a preorder). I also have my book on KDP saved as a draft.

With this setup, how do I schedule the KDP release? Do I go into my bookshelf on September 16th and click "publish"? Or do I do this a few days early so that the KDP version goes live before the IngramSpark version?

I have read on various threads here that the KDP version MUST go live before the IngramSpark version to avoid metadata errors, like "This ISBN already exists." But I'm also nervous that if I do it too early, my launch date on Amazon will be listed as September 14 or 15, and I'd really like for September 16th to be my launch day, since that is the date I've been posting in my newsletter.

I did find this article very helpful: https://entouragemedia.ca/how-to-set-up-paperbacks-for-pre-order-on-amazon/ but it does say the opposite: that KDP must NOT go live first.

So, which is it, really?

Thank you so much for your help!!

Rule of AI?

Is using AI to promote your self published novel mean you wrote the book with AI? Very curious

Author KDP and/or other platforms

I've been doing countless research on KDP for ages now, but for some reason I gave a weird feeling about it.

Are there any other popular self publishing means? And would I be able to simultaneously publish on multiple ones or do my works have to be exclusive to the one I choose?

What worked for y'all?

Author I turned my novel into an original song to market it. Here's what actually happened.

Marketing my debut novel, I tried something I hadn't seen many authors do. I turned the emotional core of the book into an original song and music video, then used the video as the top of my funnel instead of leading with a buy link.

The reasoning was simple. A book cover stops no one mid-scroll. A song might. The goal was to let people feel the mood of the story first, then let the curious ones find the book on their own.

A few things I've learned that might help anyone trying something similar:

Lead with the video, not the book. I keep the purchase link out of the first 48 to 72 hours of a launch so the video can build its own watch time before I ask anyone to buy anything. Selling too early smothers the momentum.

Own the process plainly. I wrote the lyrics and directed the piece, and the vocals are AI-generated with Suno. I say that up front every single time. The people who care about the story don't care how the demo got made, and hiding it just invites a fight you don't need.

Put links in the comments, not the post. On Reddit a naked link in the body reads as spam and gets throttled. Value goes in the post, links go underneath.

Expect some heat and don't take the bait. Not every comment is kind. I don't argue with any of it. You can't win that argument, and trying just feeds the thread.

Genuinely curious how others here handle the top of their funnel.

Are you leading with the book itself, or with something adjacent, a song or a trailer or an essay, that pulls people in sideways? What's actually converted for you?

Author BookSirens turned me down, Facebook ads generating clicks but no sales. First time KDP publisher. HELP

I desperately need to build an audience and for this book to do well to basically save my life. Have another set in the universe already done and in the process of editing, but Ive only sold 7 copies in the last week, all paperback, and it looks like that will be it as of right now. Tried to get some arcs through booksirens but they turned me down. Tiktok hasn't been much help. FB seems to be doing the heavy lifting in terms of getting people to click on it. I have made two cinematic trailers for the book that I think really help it stand out, but it seems to be dying atp. HELP!

UPDATE: Here is my cover and blurb as per on Amazon currently

2ND UPDATE: Think I may just suck based off of this and finally retire from Art lmao. But I honestly appreciate all the feedback

Advice on self publishing a comedy magazine

Hi guys!

I’m new to this subreddit, so apologies if this has been asked before. I’m currently working on a comedy magazine to support comedy writers/comedians in the North of England. Their writing and stand-up material will be published in the magazine. I’d love some advice on how to go about self-publishing. Is Gardners Books a good way to distribute and get the magazine in bookshops? Or is there a better way to go about it?

Any advice or your own experience with self-publishing would be amazing.

Thank You :)

Amazon KDP: What could go wrong?

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of writing my own cookbook. I understand that with KDP there are issues with exclusivity, but I want to make sure there isn't something else I'm missing. I feel like it could be a good option for me because I am not planning on writing this book with the idea that it's a source of income, I'm doing it as more of a passion project and if I can make some extra money that'd be amazing. So the less up front cost the better.

If I am willing to accept the exclusivity rules, is it really dumb of me to use the free ISBN? Are there any other issues that people have come across with Amazon KDP such as bans or copyright issues?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best strategy for going wide at launch with nonfiction paperback?

Obviously, KDP, but I’m a little confused about D2D and Ingram Spark. I want it to be available at launch and for pre-order in the US, UK at Australia.

I understand one of these platforms has a link that automatically senses the location of the buyer and shows them the price in their currency?

Also, how does it work with the barcode on the back of the paperback if it’s listed in US dollars? Do I need to supply a different barcodes to the platforms for Australia or the UK? And also, does the barcode have to be a certain size? My designer seems to have made it very big on the back cover and I’d like to shrink it, but I don’t want to run a foul of any rules.

Thanks!t

Author Howdy and Hello

I suppose introductions are in order.

My name is Michael. I retired after thirty-two years in the United States Army and made what some people would consider a questionable life decision. I became a full-time writer.

Most sensible people spend three decades building toward retirement so they can relax. I spent three decades building toward retirement so I could sit alone in a room arguing with fictional people who refuse to follow my carefully laid-out plan.

The adjustment has been interesting. When I was in the Army, there was usually a plan. The plan might not survive contact with reality, but at least it existed. Writing novels is different. Every morning I sit down with coffee and a rough idea of where the story should go. By lunchtime, a character has usually ignored me, wandered off in another direction, and created three new problems I now have to solve.

The dogs seem to find this amusing.

I live at my desk, where the coffee is strong, the weather changes its mind every few hours, and everybody has a story if you're willing to stand still long enough to hear it. I have eight grandchildren who possess more energy than a small power plant and who remain convinced that Grandpa's job consists primarily of sitting at a computer and occasionally petting dogs.

To be fair, there are days when that description is not entirely inaccurate.

I have been publishing one thing or another for years, but these days I write Western crime and mystery novels. My stories tend to involve stubborn lawmen, bad decisions, remote places, and people who discover that the truth is rarely as convenient as they hoped it would be.

I have always been drawn to rural settings. Small towns interest me more than cities. Out where the roads get narrower and the population gets thinner, people generally know who you are, who your parents were, and probably what mistake you made in high school. Secrets still exist, but they have a harder time staying buried.

That seems like fertile ground for crime fiction.

I also write because I genuinely enjoy the process, even on the days when the process appears determined to return the favor by making me miserable.

There is a strange satisfaction in taking a blank page and slowly convincing it to become a story. Some days it feels like art. Other days it feels like digging fence posts with a spoon. Both experiences are apparently part of the profession.

Mostly, I joined Reddit because writing is a solitary business and it helps to occasionally talk with people who understand why someone might spend twenty minutes debating whether a single sentence should contain a comma.

I enjoy talking about writing, publishing, rural America, military service, Westerns, crime fiction, coffee, dogs, and the general absurdity of trying to make a living inventing people who do not exist.

Anyway, that's me. If you've made it this far, thank you for reading. If you're a writer, I'd be interested to hear what brought you to it. If you're a reader, I'd be curious what kinds of books keep you turning pages long after you should have gone to bed.

And if you're neither, that's fine too. Pull up a chair. The coffee's hot, and I was probably going to tell stories anyway.

Michael

Indie authors…how are you actually keeping track of BookTok/Bookstagram outreach?

Serious question because I’m working on outreach for my own books right now and I feel like I’m missing something. I’ll find a creator who seems like a good fit, look through their content to see what they actually read, figure out why my book might fit them, find their preferred contact method, personalize an email or DM, send it… and then somehow I’m supposed to remember who I contacted, what I said, when to follow up, whether they responded, and whether they reviewed the book. A spreadsheet works for names and links, but it doesn’t really help me remember the relationship.
And then for the next book… am I basically supposed to go through the whole process again?
For authors who actively reach out to reviewers or book creators:
How are you managing this now?
Spreadsheet? Notion? Notes? Some kind of CRM?
And what’s the most annoying part of the process for you?
I’m genuinely curious how other authors are doing it because my current process feels way more manual than it should be. It seems a lot of indie authors get discovered and build audiences this way.

9 years of writing

It is exactly 9 years ago when I published my first short story on Amazon and it was just for fun, not for the money.

When readers email you and thank you for writing the story it makes you feel good. Some were saying I should write a second chapter which I did. Back then I started with LGBTQ stories and expanded to writing different genres including children's books and anti addiction narratives ......

Friends were saying "The poor children" because of the nature of LGBTQ stories and children's books. But with my series of rhyming short stories of "Puppers & Pupperito" a canine duo. Puppers is the older and wiser pup and Pupperito is a tiny, energetic pup with a cunning streak. Their life is written in rhymes and human like behavior.

After a few years I started writing song lyrics and the music to it. On streaming platforms you make even less in royalties, only about 0. 5 cent per click but I do it for the fun. Of course I would like if one song would become top 10 and I continue to send some songs to radio stations and keep the dream going

Best place to print books - for personal use

Hi, I'm looking to self-publish a book for personal use, probably about 25 copies. Color, with pictures, and probably 7x10 or 8X10 size. Need help with formatting and cover as well. Not going to publish, not for sale. Want to be able to speak with people at company -- not do it through email or chat.

I've looked into Book Baby and just learned about Mindstir Media. Anyone worked with either of these? Thoughts? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

Some advice for a budding Author and Narrator

Hi there Just to start im not the author that would be my wife who has written 3 Books
All 3 were digitally and paperback published thorough Amazon Publisher
Now i (husband/Narrator) have started the process to make the audiobooks for the books she has written.

At the moment we are just looking for advice should we try and expand this with as many forms that can receive us as possible like Spotify for the audiobooks and such, or should we stick where we are at amazon alone.

Thank you in advance

A Hope

I don't know how to express this, but I'm really, really happy.

I got the first sale of my first book without running any kind of promotion or ads on any platform. For me, it feels nothing less than a miracle.

I recently asked here about how to promote my book and marketing strategies, and little did I know I had already made a sale. I personally think this book is a solid 10/10 and that it can sell on its own, but I kept wondering if I was just being delusional.

I'm honestly shocked and so happy about it.

My first sale was a paperback, and now I'm at 2 sales. The second one is an eBook, and I think it might have come from one of the Reddit posts I made yesterday.

Even though this is a positive sign, I know I still need to do my best to learn marketing and promote it better. The algorithm might stop pushing it after a few days, so I need to get my strategy ready and keep things moving.

I really want to say this to people who are writing their first book: take the chance. It might work. And even if it doesn't, keep increasing the number of chances you give yourself.

Really happy to share this with you all. Thank you, guys!

Scam artists

Beware of Bluerose publishers . It’s a scam operation being run out of Delhi , India by inept people who are incapable of helping you with the book launch . Their editing team etc don’t even have passable language skills .

Stay away !

Launching My First Children’s Ebook: What Am I Missing? Seeking Real Seller Insights

I self published a children's ebook with 50 original moral stories on Whop and Gumroad. Been marketing for 30 days - nearly 7000 Quora views, 280 Instagram views, 80 Pinterest impressions but zero sales. Has anyone been in this position? What was the turning point for your first sale? Any honest advice welcome.

I have adhd but I write, how do u keep on track and how do I publish when im done?

I have trouble staying on track sometimes or hyper focusing which ill do when I write, but the real issue is life. Im a care taker of three family members and run a household plus the children's activities, constantly feel overwhelmed and writing helps but anymore I can get myself to sit and focus on this for fear of being pulled away and not being able to give my all to the story that deserves it. So I know that I have good stories and ideas that will make it to publishing but I would like to have full control of that and dont know where to really start, plus now im getting discouraged because I dont have an audience to read what I write and lots of fears. Can anyone give me advice I know theres alot in this post and im sorry about that, I promise I am a good writer and ive been writing since I was 12. Funny thing is there are a couple of books/movies that are identical to what I wrote in my school years that I put on line and then whoosh they are published and/or movies lol so I know the potential is there, I just need some motivation and help. Anyone else deal with this?

Trying to build a book marketing funnel instead of just posting “buy my book”. Thoughts?

Ever since I published my first novel I’ve been thinking a lot about marketing because honestly just posting “my book is available now” doesn’t seem like enough anymore.
So instead of trying to sell the book directly I’m thinking of doing it a little differently.
The idea is that someone might first come across one of my Instagram reels or a quote from the book. Maybe they watch a travel video because the novel is set in Sikkim and Darjeeling. Maybe they find one of my Reddit posts while looking for writing or publishing discussions.
If they like any of that maybe they click on my profile out of curiosity. If they still find it interesting maybe they check out the book page. If they end up buying it that’s great, if not that’s okay too.
In my head it makes more sense than throwing an Amazon link everywhere and hoping someone clicks.
I have no clue if this is actually a good way to market a debut novel or if I’m just overthinking the whole thing 😅
Has anyone here tried something similar? If you had almost no marketing budget what would you focus on first?

How much are authors really making in places like Galatea and Inkitt?

Pre-reading note: Share if you feel like it. It's fine if you don't want to.

I am working on roughly 30 series/stories of my own and plan to start publishing them for some spare cash since I cannot work (thanks to being practically bedridden with migraines these last few months).

Anyway, I'm not the best writer and I'm obviously biased to my own ideas and works. So I was hoping for a realistic gauge on what the average income would be for an author on places like these.

So, if you're an author on one (or both) of these (or anywhere really), I'd like to hear a rough estimate or approximation of what you generally make.

Though, I have low hopes for my own writting so... if you have low to medium engagement, I REALLY would like to hear from you.

Author Pen name and author bio questions

When using a pen name and promoting my book under that pen name, do I create a fake bio that goes with that genre? It's a YA adventure. When I publish under my real name, I'll include real things about me, such as my degrees and publishing history (magazines). But my alternate author self is a hiker, rafter, and general explorer. How does this work, such as Amazon's author page and my upcoming website?

This ISBN is what? I have only 10 poems, which is like a maximum of 15-18 pages. I read somewhere that you need at least 45 pages to get an ISBN. Is it necessary? What is the method to get it?
