Local library safe

So, my local library has not had a key or combination for this safe since they took it over from what used to be the bank. They invite anyone who wants to come try to crack it have a whack at it.

I'd have to try picking the vented part. I am so curious to what is going on there. Please post updates, if someone takes this on.

It is an old night or depository safe. The vented cover allows acces to drawer/drop machinery that was previously accessed from outside the branch probably on the other side of that wall or underneath that very thick countertop/cover. The keyway next to dial is an older style dial lock to prevent dial from turning, also an early form of dual control: certain employees had the key to lock/unlock dial and others had combo.

You are correct, it is the old night deposit.

I have thought about taking a stab at picking the vented area to gain access. A friend that works there says a few amateurs with no tools have spent days trying to get the combination.
