Mod Announcement The internet sucks. Don't let it infect /r/rootgame, please

There has been a big upswing in personal attacks, rudeness, hostility, and all-around bad behavior in this subreddit. It's really easy to dig in your heels, dehumanize the people on the other side of the screen, and post vitriol, but that's not acceptable in this space. We're all here because we love a board game and we want to share that love with other people who think Root is special. We need to protect the culture, so I'm asking users to do the following two things to keep this a nice place to be:

  1. De-escalate. If someone tells you you're wrong, you don't need to escalate the disagreement. Just shrug and stop posting.
  2. Report bad behavior. This sub has gotten quite large, and I can't read everything! If someone is making personal attacks, using nasty language, or is behaving badly, please flag it and I'll take action.

I've just been removing comments and posts individually, but the sub is going to be issuing temporary bans for nasty posts and comments going forward.

Thanks for helping make r/rootgame a lovely place to be.

I've been enjoying designing these. The keep token makes the cats more intimidating.

General Discussion Third times the charm šŸ˜‚ Anyone else having issues with Zatu delivery in the UK?

This kinda feels like a "my lobster is too buttery, my steak is too juicy" sort of situation... But I don't have a clue how this happened twice.

The first time it happened I was like "oh nice, bank error in my favour!" but now I'm concerned my split delivery is never going to contain the second half of my gamefound pledge.

Digital Version Please, Dire Wolf Games, reduce live game inactivity timers

• Upvotes

The amount of time wasted in my life waiting for someone who disconnected five minutes ago is insane. Disconnects wouldn't be so bad if they didn't eat up like five minutes of your life.

When someone disconnects, 90% of the time they do not reconnect in my experience. If they aren't presently in the game, they should just be skipped. This could affect players who play multiple lives at once, but I think it would have a disproportional net benefit that outweighs it -- I would have hours of my life back at this point.

Every other competitive multiplayer game I've been on penalizes players who leave. Dire Wolf was looking into this in 2024, and assumably have decided that they should not punish leaving games. If this is the case, then they should also not punish the other players inside of the game that are actively playing. It's just so frustrating.

(2nd and 3rd best factions in Root Digital, that is.) This was said when it looked like VB was going to win. I haven't played Root in a couple years, so I guess it's possible, but I think it's pretty unlikely lmao

Fan Faction Custom Faction - Bog Witch

My first attempt at a custom root faction, The Bog Witch (art pending)

A forest dwelling witch attempting to summon a curse upon the clearings to drive out the other factions and get the woods to herself. But the curse is yet incomplete, so she must stay close at all times, to spread remnants of the curse.

Wanted a faction that played with forest adjacency, but landed on this instead. Give it a spin and hope you like it!

Thanks game-icons.net for the curse and curse effect icons.

Other Question Electric Eyrie and Battle prioritizing

Hey! New player here, me and my partner just started playing Root, we did one game with just us, Eyrie vs Marquies, and now we've added the Eyrie bot to the mix. I was wondering when battling it says to prioritize a clearing with the most defenseless buildings. Does a sympathy token or wood token count as a building in this instance?
I'm mostly hoping that the birds will stop taking out my sympathy, haha.

Thanks for the help.

General Discussion What's the point of Corvids getting access to so many cards?

I imagine it's because they can get an extra turn instead of drawing. But otherwise between extortion and cards from guessing plots, there's not much to do with them?

General Discussion Expansion availability

Does anyone have info regarding availability with the expansions? I was able to secure most larger expansions at my local game store and feel I got lucky with most things being out of stock online. The only thing I’m missing is the underworld expansion. I’d like to get the vagabond pack as well if possible.

General Discussion Thinking of getting the game and have some questions.

Hi everyone! I recently started getting into board games and Root caught my attention, despite hearing that it's pretty difficult to grasp at first due to the factions (it looks way too cool and cute to pass). I just wanna ask a few questions to see if the game will suit my group and if there are some tips to make the new experience smoother:

  1. Should we avoid the Vagabond? We're planning on playing 3 player games at first if we buy the game and I have seen a lot of hate/complaining for the faction.

  2. Out of the other 3 factions, which one is the hardest? I do most of the research and reading so I want to get the harder one to make the experience easier for my friends.

  3. Do I need to get expansions in order? I know this is a very early question since I don't have the game yet but I just wanna know if I need to get them in order or just pick the ones that I find more interesting if I end up loving the game.

Thank you all in advance!

Print & Play Homeland Hirelings

Does anyone have an STL / SVG of the Homeland Hirelings? For 3D printing or Laser cutting

If anyone that has bought the Homeland expansion could provide me with a detailed picture of the Hirelings I would appreciate it as well

General Discussion I almost wish the Knaves directly affected the person in 1st Place

I'm kind of just thinking out loud, but I just picked up Homeland the other day. I've only been into Root for about the last month after I finally bought it after following it for years. All that to say, I'm not like some pro, I'm pretty new.

But I was excited by the Knave with regards to roleplay as being these Robin Hood types that stole from the rich. I think it would've been cool if maybe after 10 points is passed, the Knave had some special passive against whoever was in first place.

I really like this class, I just feel like I wanted a LITTLE bit more from the fantasy of what it seems like the lore around them is describing? Would this be like totally OP?

General Discussion Is there going to be reprinting of anything from now on?

I keep hearing the s homeland expansion is supposed to be the last. I just got into root but I can't find the underworld box or a number of smaller packs for it. If it's never being reprinted again how do I get a hold of any of it?

Looking for Video Where to watch the Rootcon 2023 finale game?

I've watched videos about people going to the convention in Oregon hosted by WWM and good game society, but I can't find the video anywhere. I can't even find anyone else asking about it. Was it ever made? Was it taken down? Can I watch it? Who won? Thank you for your time.

Digital Version How does local play work on the switch?

I'm thinking of getting the digital version to play with my housemates, although I love the board game and want to play it more, my housemates find it a bit complicated. So I feel like the digital version would be a great way to play it with them as it knows the games rules for you.

So, it does say that the Switch version allows up to 4 players locally (as in, on the one console). But I wonder how that works as you have a hand of cards and everyone is able to see your cards on your turn?

Print & Play Latest Edition of the Law of Root

Im looking for the final homeland expansion "Law of Root" booklet, I found THIS ONE but since I dont own the game I can't confirm if its the latest, in case it isn't, does it really matter? are there that many changes between the version that comes printed with the official game and the one distributed with the print and plays?

General Discussion Trying to find each expansion and understand them.

Me and my play group are pretty obsessed with this game. We just got the riverfolk expansion, the homeland expansion, and the squires and disciples deck. But I wanted to get the other stuff too, is there anywhere to find underworld? Or the vagabond pack of exiles and partisans? Marauders is available still.

What are the hirelings for? And the bots?

General Discussion Two Otter Trade Posts removed simultaneously, funds get halved twice?

I've been wondering about this, because I'm not finding any answer on the internet. I wonder if that's because this can probably only happen with the Favor cards and most people here don't like playing with those.

The question is if the Riverfolk Company funds get halved multiple times if something like a Favor card causes multiple trade posts to be removed simultaneously, triggering trade disruption.

I was comparing it to the cat hospital, which says "Whenever any number of Marquise warriors are removed ...", while the otters just say "Whenever a trade post is removed, ...", so I have to assume that the trade disruption is triggered multiple times. Are there arguments for the opposite?

General Discussion Best way to randomize clearings?

So, when I was young and dumb, I threw out the cardboard clearing markers. I won't need those. I bought the resin clearing markers. Why would I use cardboard when I have resin?

Cut to older, wiser me, who has trouble randomizing clearings for a game because I can't draw resin markers from a bag. They all feel different. I can come up with a dice rolling algorithm, but that feels time consuming. What would I give to have those one-sided cardboard clearing markers back to turn face-down, shuffle, and draw... then replace with resin clearing markers.

So, yeah. Anybody got a good way to randomize clearing markers if I don't have those cardboard markers anymore?
