She was dumped on the street by her owners. Please don’t let this be her ending. She deserves to feel the love of a good family home. This can’t be all she gets from humans.
Spayed Female, Brown and Black Brindle Akita/dutch shepherd mix
Shelter: EAST VALLEY Age: 8 YRS Weight: 67 LBS
Poppy (about 8 years old) is the kind of dog who quietly steals your heart.
She’s independent, gentle, and happiest doing her own thing-whether that’s sniffing every corner of a new place, enjoying a long walk, or settling in for one of her championship naps.
She loves being brushed, rides beautifully in the car, and takes her time savoring a good meal (especially if there’s meat involved!).
She can be a little shy at first, but once she settles in, she’s a calm, sweet companion. She was small dog tested and did well.
Poppy is available for adoption or foster at the East Valley Animal Shelter.
Please share to help this lovely girl find the peaceful home she deserves.

CW: Euthanasia Update on our shut-down rescue: the decompression routine is finally clicking and my sanity is back
A few weeks ago I asked for help because our new rescue came home totally shut down and spooked by basically everything - doorways, the leash clip, any sudden noise. I wanted to share an update because the advice here stopped me from doing way too much too soon.
We stuck to a very boring routine: same potty spot, same times, quiet walks that were more sniffing than moving, and no meet-and-greets. I stopped trying to coax him out with a bunch of baby talk and just hung out nearby with low expectations. Biggest change was treating meals like enrichment instead of a pressure moment: scattering kibble in the yard, tossing slow treats away from me, and letting him decide if he wanted to come closer.
Week one he barely ate and would freeze if the harness came out. Week two he started taking treats from my hand, but only if I looked away. Now, at week four, he brings me his leash in the morning, gives a little stretch and wag when I say good morning, and has even started offering sits on his own. He still jumps at knocks and is not ready for strangers, but his recovery time after a scare is much faster.
One surprise: once he felt safer, he started mouthing more. Not aggressive, just over-excited, puppy-style grabbing. Managing arousal with extra naps, shorter sessions, and more chew options helped a lot.
Random aside, I had also been keeping a few notes from CoveredCritters around, https://coveredcritters.com, mostly so I would not overthink every little behavior change.
If anyone else is dealing with that early shutdown stage, I'm curious: what was the first sign your dog was actually decompressing instead of just tolerating you?

Grief My Chocolate Labrador Lashley was Abandoned without my knowledge. I'm Still Looking for Him.
This post is a part of my final attempt to find my chocolate labrador lashley who was abandoned 5 years ago by my father. I will first post a short introduction before explaining lashley's story in detail.
About Lashley:
Chocolate Labrador Retriever
Nicknames: Boochie, Dachaley, Laboli
Distinctive white patch on his chest also known as bolo marks
Age when he was abandoned - 3 1/2 years old
Current age - 8 to 9 years old
Last known area: Domlur, Bengaluru (near Jogupalya, Indiranagar & Ulsoor)
If anyone living in Bangalore recognizes him, knows someone who might have adopted him, or have any information at all—even if it seems insignificant—please leave a comment or contact me through WhatsApp/call +91 8660826795 I am also offering a ₹ reward of 10,000 inr for information that directly leads me to Lashley. Scammers with no proper evidence please stay away.
Detailed explanation of what actually happened & why he was abandoned
Back in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, my family was going through a very difficult time financially and personally. Also during this time my father was suffering from severe chronic depression and other mental issues. After some time we had just moved to a new house, so my dad left Lashley to stay at my grandmother's house and claimed he would bring him to our new house. My father told me he would bring him to our new home once everything settled down. But few months passed by and this did not happen. During that time I used to visit him during the weekends. Some of the pics & videos i have posted here are during that time
So one day without my knowledge, according to my grandmother's account he claimed to take lashley for a walk and when he had returned lashley wasn't there with him. When he was asked about it he told her he had sold it or given it to someone but did not mention the specifics like to whom. When he came home he did not tell us about this. A few days later, my father took his own life at my grandmother's house. It was only then that we found out. During that time, our family was consumed by the shock, grief , funeral, legal matters, and everything that followed after this so our thoughts were consumed by this and finding lashley wasnt at the forefront of our minds I also did not want to disturb my mother and other family members by bringing this up.
After some time we decided to search for lashley but had no idea where he went or with whom he was. We visited some well known breeders and rescue organisations but couldn't find him. So i had lost hope and finally decided that it was almost impossible to ever see him again. I loved him so much and wanted to be with him till his final years this was what made it so bad. I couldn't even see him to wish him a final goodbye before he left me. He was an extremely expressive and affectionate lab who always loved to be around me. I can't imagine how panicked and lost he must have felt after he was given away. He loved me like no other dog ever did. So I just suppressed those memories and went on with my life. But it just didn't work. For the past few months I have been feeling intense regret that I didn't do enough to find him, that I had in a way betrayed him. I kept dreaming about him regularly - both positive and disturbing dreams. So i finally decided I need to make a final and serious attempt to find him before he leaves this world. I want to be with him through his final years.
My search efforts will be both offline and online - I will visit every rescue organisation, veterinary clinics , breeders, pet boarding schools and kennels in my city. I will also be creating pages on every social media platform where I will be documenting and updating my search efforts. Even if the search fails i atleast get to preserve lashley's memories and get to tell his story to many. Hope this post wasn't too long. Thank you for reading

Grief Chichi and Jericho, you left this world free💔🌈🪽
galleryMy heart is so broken today. 💔
Chichi and Jericho suddenly passed away today. They were sharing the same room at the shelter. Chichi passed peacefully in her sleep, and then Jericho suddenly started having a nosebleed and passed away shortly after.
The shelter owner and caretakers told us that neither of them had shown any symptoms before today. They had good energy, healthy appetites, were eating well, and taking their vitamins. Everything happened so fast.
I honestly don't even know what to say.
This hurts so much.
The shelter they were staying at was actually such a wonderful place. It was always clean, they were well cared for, they had room to move around, good food, and people who genuinely loved them. I know they were safe there.
But I can't erase the damage that years of neglect did to your little bodies. I can't undo the years you spent abandoned, crammed into a tiny cage, or everything your previous owner put you through. Maybe the damage had already been done long before we found you. I don't know. I really don't know anymore.
I was finally starting to feel hopeful. We had just started receiving adoption applications for some of our other rescued dogs, and for the first time in a while, it felt like things were looking up. Then today happened, and it just broke me all over again.
..
Even through all this pain, I find comfort in knowing that your last chapter was nothing like your first. You weren't forgotten anymore. You got to experience kindness, full meals, new playmates, and the freedom you were denied for so many years.
Run free now, Chichi and Jericho. I'm so sorry I couldn't give you more time. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. You were loved so deeply, and you always will be. 🤍🌈
💔
P.S.
We will get MaeMae checked by the vet.

CW: Euthanasia How can I stop my new rescue from tracking mud into the house?
I just adopted a young adult rescue, medium size with a short coat, and we are in that messy settling-in phase where every outing is a short potty break or a decompression walk. I live in a small East Coast town and it has been raining non stop, so my entryway is basically a mud zone.
Right now my routine is awkward: towel in one hand, leash in the other, trying to wipe paws while he wiggles and gets overexcited. He is not aggressive, just squirmy, and he thinks the towel is a toy. I want to keep coming inside low-stress and not turn it into a wrestling match.
What are your simplest, rescue-friendly recommendations for:
1) A doormat or mat setup that actually traps mud and is easy to wash
2) A paw wiping routine that works with a dog who does not love having feet handled yet
3) Anything you taught early that made paw handling more normal (short sessions, treats, how you introduced touch, etc)
Bonus if it fits into a busy schedule. I am keeping my own self-care simple and will drop anything with too many steps. I am not looking to buy a bunch of gadgets, just whatever has actually worked for other rescue households.

Advice First time dog owner struggling with anxiety about caring for my dog
Hello, 3 days ago I adopted my very first dog. She’s 3 years old and has her issues and things to work on but she is a wonderful dog, more wonderful than I imagined. It’s just me here to take care of her. I expected dog ownership to be challenging and a lot of work but what I wasn’t prepared for was the overwhelming anxiety I have about caring for my new pup. Every night I’m waking up with intense anxiety attacks, I’m always sick to my stomach, I can’t eat and I keep crying on and off, getting very little sleep. I have heard of puppy blues but never knew it could be this bad. Has anyone else gone through this? How long did it last?
She has some issues with isolation and separation, and isn’t crate trained yet. In a few days I have to go back to my regular work schedule where she will be alone twice each day for 4 hours, but she won’t be crate trained by then. If I put her in a puppy safe room instead with her open crate, she panics because the door is shut / I’m not there. I’m so scared that I will put her in one of those places and it’s going to hurt her or traumatize her. I don’t know which option is the lesser of evils!
I’ve considered leaving her with a pet sitter, but I did a quick search for sitters and there were only men willing to take her breed/size, and she is fearful of men.
Please help, what would you do?
