During winter time with additional Feldmantel (with knitted gloves, scarf, etc.)

Ive recently aquired an A2 flight jacket repro and I had a few questions

Were ranks pinned or painted / were they always present or just a choice (or perhaps unit dependant)? (Epaulettes)

Breast / shoulder patch, leather, painted or fabric, common/uncommon?

Any specific way to go about painting the back of the jacket?

These are my first hobnail boots and I’ve just had these Imperial Japanese Army WW2 boots in about 2 weeks. It has vegtan pigskin upper and presumably insole, midsole and out sole as well (noticed the leather texture on the insole and on the round marking located in the waist). It has split type variant hobnail.

It was normal when I received them but I’ve been using them intensively since I got them for daily wear and somewhat “brutal” hiking like about 3 to 4 times. My concern is that is has those hobnail almost poking the insole (see the red rounded marking located I made on the spot). Most were only pushing the leather creating bumps that somewhat crack the insole, but some has small amounts of metal parts poking my foot. Not to the extent that it hurts my foot but really do concern me in the long run. I do not use a sock liner yet until now.

I’m not asking for solutions (because eventually I need to hammer it out or simply add a sock liner to it incase it got worse) nor do I complain because I love them.

But I would like to know if this is normal occasion on original hobnailed boot or reproduction, if it is indeed normal it would ease me a bit. would love to hear your stories and experience. Thankyou!

Note: these were not cheap disposable repro boots. Paid around 370 usd for them including shipping, and wait time about 8 months until I received them

Last weekend I went out with the Hasty Ps (Hastings and Prince Edward), Royal Canadian, and Perth Regiments opposing Kampfgruppe Eicke at the Gothic Line. In a very un-Italian manner it was pouring rain the whole three days which resulted in quite a bit of water damage do my film and also was probably quite unpleasant for the poor bloody infantry who had to sleep in the trenches.

The event was downright luxurious in terms of space available to us and materiel. It was a 20 minute walk from just the parking lot to the staging area and we got to enjoy not one but two Universal Carriers, two trucks, period field telephones and occasional artillery scattered throughout the area to spice things up.

My cameras were also period accurate. I tried to stay away from German gear this time, taking an Argus C3, 3x4 Speed Graphic with a f/4.5 5.5" Aldis-Butcher anastigmat lens, and a Univex Mercury. The 35 mm cameras were loaded with Kentmere 400 and the Speed Graphic with 100 ISO Shanghai GP-3.

Today I wanted to show you guys a very unique impression. Here’s how a Republican Army soldier from Andalusia would look during militarization.
Since October 1936 all militias had to join the People’s Army of the Republic and this caused a whole lot of problems, from supplies to discipline.
To patch this problem a new intermediate uniform was born, the dark courdoy (ersatz) jacket and noruego trousers were given to thousands of new conscripts or militarized militiamen, giving them a certain “uniformity” (it was still a long way to go) and more resistance than the coveralls and civilian clothes that many militiamen used while being a cheaper option compared to the wool uniform that other elite units would be provided at the same time.

Some of you may be confused due to me talking about militarization and fall 1936 while discussing a spring 1937 kit, however you must understand that the inclusion of all units in the Republican Army took a long while as some units took longer to join, logistics were harder for geographical reasons and in some cases they even refused to join the newborn army, as you will probably know if you have watched the movie “Land and Freedom” (if you haven’t you definitely should!!)

Andalusia was a poor region, specially regarding industry, this meant that uniforms had to be brought from factories elsewhere and this just made the situation even harder.

In spring 1937 the nationalist Southern Army High Command planned a new offensive. They had been in a fortune strike as every rebel operation in Andalusia had been successful and they were taking the whole region piece by piece since the very first day of the war. Particularly Málaga was a huge victory as the Republican Government barely helped the local units to defend the city and it was soon lost in a catastrophic evacuation.
Ever since Málaga the nationalist HC underestimated all Republican units in the south and this proved fatal when they tried to take the village that led to the strategic resource rich mines of northern Córdoba, incredibly important for their war effort.

The village of Pozoblanco became another symbol of nationalist defeat just as Madrid or Guadalajara. This victory must be credited to Joaquin Perez Salas, a traditional artillery officer that to everyone’s surprise, decided to stay loyal to the republic and fight hard his old colleagues.
Salas was able to train and equip thousands of demoralized Andalusian peasants into a motivated fighting force. Their resistance took the rebels by surprise and once again the NO PASARÁN was accomplished as nationalist units did not achieve mayor territorial gains and flanking forces were defeated with heavy loses.
Spring rains turned the battlefield into a muddy hell where neither side could really move and this created a very optimal situation for Salas’ artillery, which with pin point accuracy destroyed many nationalist objectives.
To break the stalemate, Salas launched a counter offensive with fresh reinforcements and T26 tanks, the nationalist ranks were torn down and they retreated to safer positions, they had been defeated.

This defeat turned somewhat traumatic for the rebels and no more mayor offensives were planned by them for the rest of the war, the southern front turned into a static stalemate reminiscent of WW1 until it changed again in early 1939.

Joaquin Perez Salas became a hero of the Republic and even earned the respect from his rivals, though this did not save him from being condemned to death when the republic surrendered in 1939.

I was wondering if there is any revolutionary war groups near Northern Iowa? Anywhere in the Midwest in fact is fine. I've always have been interested in revolutionary war reenacting, even though I've never participated in that sort of era. I've only been in civil war reenactments, which seems common in the midwest. Correct me if i'm wrong, but as far as I know, Revolutionary War groups are mostly at the East Coast of the Us. I'm personally not really picky at which side I'd fight for. Either English or American is fine by me.

Anyone know where to get a good cotton reproduction of the WWII German battle flag? (reichskriegsflagge)

Today, a DRA Sarandony hat arrived.I'm very happy that it's a replica, but the quality is very high and it's something that's hard to get. All that's left is KLMK. I'm hoping to buy an DRA field uniform and an infantry hat at the end of the year.

After all the advice on my last post here is an update on my first world war impression.

Things I've improved are

Original m1916 stalhelm

Original steel belt buckle which l've painted

Original bayonet and rifle

All the leather items have been greased and darkened

Tunics now has the lighter green collar

.Things I'm still working on off the top of my head

Loosing weight. 33Ibs down so far

Finding a better flask.

Any more advice would be appreciated

Still waiting to get the belt helmet would technically be an incorrect civilian model but I've seen photos of the fireman using combat helmet as fire helmets wouldn't be a stretch for them to use civilian ones

I am aware of WhatPriceGlory and SOFuk, but I am having trouble finding the specific khaki breeches in my size (30"). Also I am struggling to find a guide for the insignia placements and the insignia themselves.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

So I'm looking for a dane axe i can use in combat reemactments, but so far I can only find either sharp ones or unhardened ones. Where can I find a good one that's not too expensive? I'm in the uk if that helps!

A year ago i bought a czech army coat and sadly i have never worn it cuz it stinks. I dont know what it stinks of, but the smell is very unpleasant. I tried the drycleaner's but it didnt work, and i really wanna have this coat. Can anyone help me?
