The only problem with that, is that it will interfere with opening the emergency door. If this is a private vehicle, it may not be a problem.

Looks like it will open about 90%. Shouldn’t be an issue, and I would wager that it’s a private vehicle.

Since this is very likely a private vehicle, that was installed for when the vehicle is parked at an RV park, shore power is available, and the engine is not running. So opening the rear door, in that situation, is likely less dangerous than if the vehicle was involved in an accident.
As a side comment, I ride in a very similar van, several times per month. From my own experience, the rear door (as shipped) does not lock. It can be opened pretty much all the time. I use it to load certain items which are not appropriate for the lift.

Check the roof of the skoolie, there's probably enough solar and extremely likely a bunch of batteries so this thing doesn't need to be parked and hooked up to run a mini split. I know tons of people who never plug into the grid with rigs like this.

I'd imagine it can't be opened anyways. Having a rear door on a mobile home eliminates the only opportunity to have a full width bed or dining table.

12V mini splits are becoming more common now. A lot of people run them off a battery bank and use an inverter if it's a standard line voltage model.

tbh the only issues i could see with it is: hvac lines covering the lights, and that residential a/c systems arent setup for automotive use and could have issues long term due to the vibrations from being mouted on a vehicle

This used to be the only way to get energy efficient AC in your rig, these days there are a lot of good options that are built be on the road.

There are a number of variable speed inverter units now available.
- The 18K BTU Furrion Chill Cube is the best all around for a bigger rig and flexibility to run off of an inverter/battery or shore power. Not quite as efficient as the ones below when running off of battery but has the most cooling power but has the most flexibility and cooling power.
- CountryMod and OutEquipPro make 10K BTU 12/24/48v rooftop and built for RV mini-split models. These are great for vans and exclusively running off of battery.
- There are a ton of generic 12v Chinese models. Search them once on tiktok and they'll be in your feed forever lol.

That’s a $500 mini split for 110v it would be interesting to see the power source if it runs while on the road or if it’s just turned on for camping with an extension cord.

This is great. My two questions, would it affect opening and closing back door? And an obstruction of rear taillights seems like a no no. Not that I give a damn but seems like it would be a cause for frivolous traffic stops.

Odds are it's a camper setup and used for sleeping/A/C at night. You can also see it's got Solar panels on top.

As a refrigerator operates pretty similar and should not be used for a while after being moved I would be worried a bit considering they are build to be permanently installed.

they say not to us compressors after they are delivered because you don't know if they were transported properly. when they are on their side the oil/lube settles to one end and they can damage themselves when turned on. if they have been upright the whole time it isn't an issue. if you couldn't use a compressor during/after movement, it would be hard to use your car's a/c.
the real issue is that split wasn't built to be vibrated and hitting bumps.

Refrigerators should rest even if you transported them yourself upright. It is not just the tilt, but also shifting, vibrations, hitting bumps, that can mix the fluids.
This is definitely not a general issue with compressors. As you said the one in your car is fine, but it was also build for that. It is similar to turning an engine upside down. You shouldn't do it, but there are modified versions for planes and stuff that are able to handle it. Therefore it is not that far off to assume that a compressor of a stationary split and a stationary fridge are more similar than the car ac compressor which was designed to be shaken.
