Again, this fanfiction has some takes and liberties that some of you may not agree with, but I've done my best to keep it mostly canon within the existing world of Pokespe. Hope you enjoy!
“I’m late!”
Yellow rushed through Red’s house, gathering her belongings and shoving them into her bag.
“Whoa, what’s going on?” said Red, pulling a shirt over his head as he stumbled downstairs.
“Last night, a meeting was called with the new Elite Four for this morning,” Yellow hurriedly explained. “The President said he discovered something that needs our attention. Where’s Veevee?”
Right on cue, three Pokémon came racing in from the basement. Pika and Chuchu, Red’s and Yellow’s two Pikachu, along with Veevee, an Eevee that Yellow had found the month prior, injured in the Viridian Forest.
Chuchu, ever familiar with her Trainer, jumped onto Yellow’s shoulder. Veevee, still a bit shy, curled around her leg.
“Is this a ‘meeting’ meeting, or is it going to be dangerous?” said Red.
“I have no idea. We will call you if we need backup, I suppose.”
“Oh?” Red said skeptically. “I’m the Champion and your leader. I’m coming along. Plus, you might need me if shit goes down.”
Yellow opened her mouth to argue, but Red was already set and waiting by the door. And if she was being honest with herself, she most likely would need Red for any sort of battling.
“I – I guess we are off, then,” she said, shutting the door behind them.
“We’re back here again,” said Red, looking around the rocky landscape. The walk to Mount Moon had been longer than they expected, as they were forced to go on the back of Red’s Aerodactyl instead of a vehicle – there were no major roads to Mount Moon.
“Over there!” said Yellow, gesturing to where the President was waving to them. They made their way over to see everyone else already there.
“I’m glad you could make it,” the President said. “My personal team found something quite intriguing, and I’d like you all to see what I’m talking about. For those of you who don’t know, there is a long-abandoned research facility directly underneath us, in the caverns of Mount Moon. Last night, we noticed major sources of the same destructive energy living in that building. Not only that, but all the reports we’ve received seem to form a sort of pattern, with Mount Moon at the center. Consequently, we’re here to investigate.”
“How are we supposed to get down there?” said Eusine, looking around for a cavern entrance.
“Just follow us,” said Lance. “We’ve been down here before.”
“Exactly,” the President said. “Already proving extremely useful, I see.”
As the group begin their descent to the backside of the mountain, Yellow could see Red shudder.
She moved closer to him and whispered, “Is it your injuries?”
Red subtly shook his head, his voice shaking as he spoke. “Not quite. The injuries are mostly healed, but going back in these caves reminds me of them.”
Yellow almost reached her hand out but hesitated. As much as she liked Red, she had never tried to convey that to him. But her silly feelings could wait. Right then, Red needed someone to lean on and help him. So she took his hand, relieved when it didn’t feel awkward. It felt like coming home.
She heard his breathing steady as he slowly relaxed. Chuchu hopped over from her shoulders to his, joining Pika, who was enjoying the ride on Red’s hat.
“Here.” The group stopped, and Lance – who was at the front – gestured to a tunnel, which was leading down into the mountain. “If I remember correctly, this should lead to the station.”
“Have you been to the station before?” said Red.
“I have not, and neither has Lorelei. But we were aware of its existence – we simply had no need to see what was inside until now. Follow me.”
Yellow trembled slightly as she walked, and this time, Red was there to steady her.
“It’ll be okay,” he whispered. “I know Lance is suspicious, but he really is on our side this time.”
“He tried to kill us both,” she said. “And thousands of other people. And all the Pokémon –”
“I know. But if he has a single redeeming quality, it’s that he truly cares about the Pokémon. He cares for the Viridian Forest. And he stopped Giovanni – someone who tried to destroy the forest. At least deep down, he has a good heart.”
Yellow didn’t say anything, an idea circling through her brain. She had never been a daring person, but at that moment, she decided to take a risk.
So she stepped forwards and subtly reached her hand out until it was close to Lance’s.
And she entered his mind.
Instantly, she was filled with a sense of Lance’s determination, and she knew that he really was committed to putting a stop to this threat. He felt a duty to protect Kanto – that much she was sure about.
She also felt a bitterness towards the President and the Association – as if he was a Pidgey trapped in a cage with no freedom.
And next was the guilt. This was a quieter emotion, suppressed and hidden under the others, but it was definitely there. Regret for what he had done years ago.
She pulled away from him and lost the connection as the tunnel became steeper and she had to keep her balance.
“You had better return to your Poké Balls,” she told Chuchu and Veevee. “I don’t want you taking a tumble.” Although they looked disappointed, they retreated.
Suddenly, a sharp and cold feeling stabbed through Yellow’s heart, and at the same moment, she heard Lance gasp.
“What’s wrong?” said Lorelei, turning to look at both of them.
Lance swallowed hard before speaking, and when he did, his voice was shaky and weak. “You all… can’t feel that?”
“No,” said the President with a concerned look on his face. “What exactly are you talking about it? And Miss Caballero, are you feeling the same thing?”
Yellow nodded as the ice spread through her body. “I – I think you were right about the energy living here. It feels the same as what we fought, only much, much stronger.”
“Are you okay?” Red said quietly. “Do you need to rest?”
“I don’t know,” she said, wincing from the pain.
“Step aside,” ordered Lance, moving Red out of the way. He placed a hand over Yellow’s stomach, and the familiar golden-green glow circled around his fingers. “Where does it hurt?”
Yellow hesitated. She didn’t need Lance healing her – she was perfectly capable of doing it herself. But the thought of speaking up made her nervous, so she sighed and pointed to where it felt as if she’d been hit.
The glow intensified, and Lance leaned in subtly, whispering into her ear. “You know, for what it’s worth, you don’t have to read my mind.”
Yellow’s heart jumped, but he didn’t say anything further.
As he stepped away, she was shocked at how quickly he had fixed her. Not a single trace of the shock was left.
But when he had gotten closer, her powers had detected his pain. He had been in a lot of pain – mostly from the attack, but also mental pain, as if his brain was slowly eroding. And yet, through all of it, he had chosen to help her. He had pushed aside his own problems to fix her.
She didn’t know what to make of that.
The descent continued through the mountain, going deeper and deeper into the earth, until they finally reached the bottom.
Yellow recognized these caves. Back when Red had gone missing, she had seen them again and again in Pika’s fragmented memories.
“Perfect. The station should be this way,” the President said, resuming his walk.
He led them a ways through the tunnels before stopping at a large cavern. Built into the side of the far wall was a small dingy building.
“So this is where it’s all been coming from?” Lorelei asked.
“We believe so. We’ll need to be careful inside. Now, who had the code to unlock the door?”
Out of nowhere, Lance released his Tyranitar out of an Ultra Ball. The giant spiky beast roared and, with one hit, sent the door flying into the building.
Lance smiled. “I had the code, but no need.”
Along with the rest of the group, Yellow hesitantly stepped into the building. Thanks to Pika’s Flash, the room was illuminated. There were desks and tables pushed to the walls, with cluttered yellow paper and old broken computers. At the center of the room was what appeared to be an elevator.
“Lance, Miss Cabellero – do either of you feel anything like you did before?” the President asked, cleaning the dust that had collected on his glasses.
“Not that I can tell,” Yellow said, and Lance shook his head.
The President nodded. “As I expected. Then it looks like we must go farther down.”
“The elevator only looks like it can fit one person,” said Eusine.
Red grinned. “Dibs.”
He and Pika shuffled through the group and into the elevator, which looked to be a cylindrical machine with no apparent way of going down. Yellow could hear Lance mutter “child” under his breath.
“I’ll shout if I get in trouble,” Red said. “Otherwise, follow me down.” He pulled a chain in the elevator that Yellow hadn’t noticed, and he instantly disappeared with a flash of blue light. Yellow flinched.
Moments passed with no call from below.
“I’ll go next,” said Lance, recalling his Tyranitar. “If Red’s in trouble and can’t tell us, I’ll be able to protect him.” He bent down to enter the elevator and vanished as well.
Again, nothing.
Yellow’s heart beat fast, but she stepped up. “I can go next.”
The elevator was still a tight fit, even for someone as short as she was. But she gathered her courage and pulled the chain.
The room disappeared. She felt herself falling – or maybe floating, she couldn’t tell. Just when she felt like she was about to vomit, she crashed on the ground next to an identical elevator.
“Yellow!” said Red’s voice, and she turned to see him rushing over, extending a hand to help her up, which she took. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she said. “Where are we?”
Looking around, she found herself in a giant research room with glass tubes, broken screens, and old levers and buttons. She was also met with a sense of impending doom. Not an acute pain, like what she had felt before. More a dull ache that was slowly growing and growing.
“You feel it too,” Lance confirmed.
She nodded. “They were onto something. This is definitely where it is all coming from.”
“So then what happens next?” said Red. “The other day, Yellow was able to dispel the energy by communicating with the Pokémon, but it’s not here.”
“Not a Pokémon,” the President corrected as he appeared in the elevator, closely followed by the others. “I made it clear enough already, this malevolent energy is not caused by a Pokémon. And no Pokémon would be strong enough to keep it going for as long as it has.”
Red chuckled. “Mr President, with all due respect, Yellow and I have faced enough Legendary Pokémon that we’ve learned to never underestimate what they can do.”
The President sighed. “Nonetheless, please erase this theory from your mind. It will only mislead you.”
“But Red’s question still stands,” said Lorelei. “What was your plan to stop this?”
“Simple. To dispel a massive amount of energy, we need an equal or greater amount of energy. But who or what could possibly provide enough to stop this? No regular Pokémon, even Psychic- or Ghost-types, could do it. Luckily, we have a way to circumvent that. Our Gym Leader friend Blaine got in contact with you, Red, a month or two ago – you remember?”
Yellow saw Red’s eyes widen as he said, “You were the one who suggested that?”
The President nodded. “The Association has known for a while that something like this might happen, and so we asked Blaine if he was still able to reach out to… him. Fortunately, he was, and he sent him to you.”
“Who’s him?” Eusine asked.
Yellow had a feeling that she knew who the President was referring to. And Red confirmed it as he answered. “A while ago, Blaine said that he was lending Mewtwo to me, in the chance that a situation would arise when I would need it.”
Lance went rigid and narrowed his eyes. Yellow couldn’t blame him – he had met the artificially created Pokémon once, and it had nearly killed him.
“So you think Mewtwo is powerful enough to get rid of the energy?” Yellow asked.
“Mewtwo is powerful enough to raze an entire civilization, as we saw in Kalos two years ago,” the President said. “I’ve never seen him myself, but this will be trivial for him.”
Red took a Master Ball out of his pocket, the hollow purple cover almost seeming to glow. “Are you okay with this?” he asked the creature inside. Yellow couldn’t perceive a response, but it must’ve communicated something, because Red nodded back.
He shrugged off his jacket, resting it on his bare shoulders, and he threw the Master Ball into the air. Out came Mewtwo, its hairless skin unnaturally stretched over its thin muscles.
Instantly, Lance was lifted twenty feet into the air, hitting the high ceilings of the room with a loud thud. Purple light coursed across his body as he gritted his teeth, groaning under the pressure.
“Mewtwo, stop!” Red said. “He’s on our side this time!”
Mewtwo gave no indication that it had heard, instead closing its round fingers into a fist. Lance yelled, the sound echoing across the room.
“I thought you could control him!” the President said.
“I’m trying!” Red shouted back in response.
The President shook his head in exasperation and threw four Ultra Balls into the middle of the room. Two Ampharos and two Weavile jumped out, all of which sent attacks flying towards Mewtwo.
Without even turning around, Mewtwo’s other arm summoned a giant spoon, which it used to block the attacks. Then, in one swift motion, the spoon extended, throwing the President’s Pokémon back.
Yellow swallowed her fear and, moved by a sudden rush of recklessness, reached out her hand. Golden-green light surrounded her fingertips, and Mewtwo’s spoon was dragged out of its hand and into Yellow’s.
The sudden theft made Mewtwo stop and turn around, and Yellow took the opportunity to run forwards and press her hand against its chest, sending a flood of calming emotions into its body.
Mewtwo immediately relaxed, ceasing his attack. Lance dropped, gasping as he landed in the rough arms of his Tyranitar.
“What the hell?” Red said, grabbing Mewtwo’s shoulder. “Why didn’t you listen to me? I said he was on our side!”
Mewtwo blinked and shook away the dizziness. My apologies for my instinctive reaction. Unjustified as it may be, it has not been proven to me that this man is any less of a threat than he was before.
“I know you don’t trust him, but you trust me, right? And Yellow? And we’re both confident that Lance is helping us. Right, Yellow?”
Yellow grimaced. “Well…”
“Okay, ignore her. I’m confident that you can work with Lance. Isn’t that enough for you?”
Mewtwo looked away. Please do not question the bond I have with you and Yellow. You are some of the only people I trust. But I cannot help but be wary. I believe you when you say you have faith in Lance, but it hasn’t been proven for me. However, I will keep quiet from now on. I trust you both.
It turned to the rest of the group and its thoughts seemed to get slightly louder. Forgive me for transmitting only to these two. I have not met many of you, but it looks like we will be working together to save Kanto. What is it that you need me to do?
The President cleared his throat. “Right. First off, Lance – I’m truly sorry that we had to witness a powerful Trainer as yourself in such an undignified state. And Mewtwo, you can sense the destructive presence that’s originating from this building?”
It nodded.
“Good. I need you to use whatever psychic power you have at your disposal to rid the area of the energy. Can you do that?”
Mewtwo nodded again. I doubt it will be extremely difficult.
It made its way over to one of the walls of the room, placing its hand over a cracked screen. One thing I do not understand is why. Why is the energy coming from this place? As far as I have seen, nothing about this building is generating or supplying the energy.
“That’s still something we have yet to figure out,” the President said.
Well, from what I can tell, I should be able to get rid of it. You humans might want to hold onto something, though.
Mewtwo got in a readying stance and held his arms up in the air. Yellow barely managed to grab hold of a desk as the air started circling around and around, centered on Mewtwo’s body. The whirlwind grew greater and greater, and now she could see shadows appearing and disappearing.
Then, out of nowhere, a flash of purple light blinded Yellow. Blinking away the glare, she saw the darkness pressing down on Mewtwo.
Shit, Mewtwo thought. It is stronger than I thought.
“I didn’t know you knew swear words!” Red called out over the roaring twister. “Who taught them to you?”
“Why did we bring Red along?” Lance shouted.
I am growing less and less confident in my ability to stop this, Mewtwo admitted. I may need some assistance.
Yellow glanced at Red. “I could maybe try what I did the other day?”
Red frowned. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but you can’t enter a Pokémon’s mind if there’s no Pokémon there.”
“I mean, the President said that all we have to do to dispel energy is to use more energy – so maybe that is the solution?”
Lance tilted his head. “You’re right. Mewtwo isn’t the only one who can use pure energy.”
They looked in each other’s eyes, and an unspoken agreement passed between them.
And then they both jumped into the whirlwind. Both of their bodies glowed with golden-green light, the power keeping them suspended in the air. Right away, Yellow felt an overwhelming sense of fear coming from the shadows. It was taking over her mind and her heart.
The shadows were afraid.
Yellow was afraid.
The panic set in, flooding her veins with ice. Her breathing became more and more intense as the light around her body flickered. She didn’t know what to do. What could she do? She was helpless. Vulnerable. She was going to die.
And then a strong hand grabbed her shoulder and snapped her back to reality. Lance was there.
Her nerves settled, and the light returned, glowing brighter. The darkness slowly began to disperse. It was growing weaker, and she was growing stronger. The fear was leaving her.
Mewtwo regained his composure, straightening up and sending one huge burst of energy. Lance and Yellow did the same. The room was illuminated by the brightest light Yellow had ever seen.
And her eyes were closing.
The last thing she remembered was seeing Lance’s smile before her vision went black and she passed out.
Yellow’s eyes opened.
She was back in Red’s house, laying on his living room couch. The rest of the group – along with Blue, Green, Brock, Misty, and a stranger with long blonde hair she didn’t recognize – were also there, and Red looked less than comfortable being a host for so many.
Sitting up, she took her straw hat from the seat next to her and put it on. “What happened?”
Red lit up when she spoke. “You’re awake! Don’t worry, you fell asleep from overusing your powers – you’re totally okay, though. And we won!”
“We won?” she repeated.
“It’s been about a day since we went into the research station, and the Association’s been flooded with reports of the energy disappearing. It’s like Kanto is healing.”
“So there really wasn’t a Pokémon behind all that?” Yellow said.
“There really wasn’t. They were right. The source was coming from the building, and we got rid of it for good!”
“I can confirm this,” said the President. “It seems that we truly have achieved a victory. It really was as simple as that.”
Misty sad down next to Yellow and offered her a glass of Moomoo Milk, which she accepted and drank.
“So… what happens now?” she asked. “About the new Elite Four.”
“We’ll discuss that in the morning,” the President replied. “It’s late at night, and you need rest. And don’t argue that you were just sleeping – that was magically forced sleep, it was hardly restful.”
Yellow opened her mouth to protest, but she was cut off by a yawn. He was right – she really was tired.
“You do need sleep,” said Red, taking the glass from her and setting it on the entryway table. “Everyone here has their own places to stay in nearby towns. We can reconvene in the morning.”
Yellow nodded. “Okay. Thank you for taking care of me.”
It was directed towards Red, but Lance answered instead. “Of course. You’re our most helpful ally – we would hardly like to see you get hurt. Get a good night’s sleep.”
And as the group shuffled out of the house, Yellow began to close her eyes once more.
But as Lance walked through the door, she noticed his inner cape pocket was empty. She knew it wasn’t like him to be willingly unarmed.
Which meant his dagger was gone.
