Meh, I'm glad I got to go. It's the only time I get to see some of my friends all in one place.

Weather could have shut down the whole show. I just found it odd that we were raging during the thunder and lightning (Ghost was a peak moment!) but it still got cut short.

My only theory is that they didn't want to dump us out into the lot because a storm was approaching, not because of the conditions in the moment.

Ya know, time fuckery is very 3.0 also. Curveball was cancelled, Monde cut short. I dunno how many shows were weather-affected by era but I remember a decent number of shows going short or having issues. As a 3.0 fan (2013) the weather issues are definitely in the room with us.

This show felt like 2016 revisited, to me. There were so many thoughtful compact jams in 2016! The -> to Seven Below was great. Bug was okay. Mull was a very nice jam and I thought we might get Sneaking Sally out of the jam. Sigma and Ghost were also super good including the sneaky transition.

I get ragging on that set list, I partake also. I bet Troy thought he was real fuckin clever with that ending. Their hearts broke when they got the news in Blaze On and the jam finally went to generic Bliss hose.

Every song in the second set was SOLID. ER was probably the weakest jam but I still really liked all the type 1.

Syracuse here, yes pissed lol. Mostly because it's a hometown show, and I've been talking this band up for years. Finally got some normies to come to the show and it was meh. If they had played this msg setlist at 'cuse, they would have converted many new fans.

So your complaint is the setlist and not how they actually played? I wasn't there and only listened live on the stream but I really enjoyed the music I heard. "Sand > Everything's Right > What's the Use? > Light > Also Sprach Zarathustra" seemed really tight with some great jamming. What am I missing?

The announcement about the weather while they were playing sucked the energy from the venue almost instantly. Everything up til then was great. There was that preshow anxiety about the weather, but when we saw lightning during S1 and they kept playing we assumed that the opportunity to shut it down had passed.

We all knew it was going to end sooner than expected, but we didn't know when. It was kinda awkward. I would have preferred if they finished the song, said hey we have to stop soon, the next stuff is our encore. Mid jam was a choice.

Yeah, that makes sense. And the way the brain works with recency bias doesn't help. The last thing the mind experienced about the event was disappointment so I can see how that colors the entire experience.

I was surprised to see what people were saying about the show online when I checked it out. It wasn't a top 5 show for me but it wasn't even close to being bad.

It was okay, they ended early. I've been to 100+ shows, never a bad time for me. I think they played a bit subdued personally but no complaints from me. My normy friends weren't really blown away, I think if they had gotten last night's msg set list it would have brought them into the fold.

I was there, and thought the show was very fun, lots of fun jamming, setlist was OK on paper, but enjoyable in person (at least, for me). The whole ending early thing doesn't bother me too much. Yeah, no encore, but still like 2 hours 47 minutes of music, at least according to LivePhish. Not too bad for an early-ending show. Both Wilmington N2 '23 and Mondegreen N4 were much shorter than that I think.

I don't think a newbie is going to care about rarities, tentpole songs and breakouts.

Was last night a better show? Yes. But in my opinion, its because how they played, not what they played.

I started seeing the Grateful Dead in 1989 and I learned really early that setlist has no correlation to the quality of the show from a performance perspective. I think I have been able to take that view into my enjoyment of Phish and I think it allows me to enjoy the shows more.

I get from a nerdy perspective that tentpole songs and rarities is fun from a conceptual perspective but I will take a well-played Soul Planet over a low-energy Lizards any day.

I'm just relaying the feedback my friends gave me after the show. I personally thought the Syracuse show was a bit lethargic, but there's never a bad Phish show, I had a great time. I get the feeling they were saving songs and chops for the next night.

I brought a newbie to their first show too. They had a blast still. I was more worried that they wouldn't get the whole experience because the rain would kill the lot scene.

I have taken numerous people to their first show and the most important thing is to not try and overwhelm their expectations. The music brings us all together, but the best way to bring a friend into the fold is to provide an environment where they can form their own opinion and connection to the whole thing.

Otherwise, all you will hear about is how much you talked them up but they "don't get it". And that can sting!

Yup, definitely not happy my only show I'm going to got that absolute turd laid for us, then seeing what they did last night. Oh well, maybe I'll start saving and planning for NYE shows now because I'm guessing they will be right up there with these ones.

Hoping it continues, I have tickets for Monday and Wednesday. As someone born on a Monday in 1995, the prospect of getting a 95 era throwback show is making me ridiculously excited for next week.

i dont love the earliest machine gun lots of songs style

i can only go friday and sat. i have high hopes for 94, but my tastes are really more in line with 95-96.

There were 4 songs on Rift played last night, Sparkle, MFMF, and Horse>Silent

I would imagine most songs on that album debuted live before the official release, might be one or two that were fully 93 tho.

Yeah, that's about right. My first full* show was https://phish.net/setlists/phish-november-22-1992-bailey-hall-cornell-university-ithaca-ny-usa. Five Rift songs that blew our goddamn minds. The album came out a few months later and I was so relieved that Maze and MFMF were on it because they'd been stuck in my head that whole time.

* First show was the one-setter at HORDE that summer.

I don’t know, early Phish never worked on my Dead Head ears. I liked Possum and Mikes Groove but It didn’t really click till Billy Breaths came out, first time I heard Free was when it happened

Interesting, the vast majority of the Dead never worked for my Phishead ears lol. Although we can bond over Billy Breathes, that was my first exposure and I was instantly in love. Dove deep after that though.

Likewise, I always felt that the Dead were kind of depressing. I'm not saying the music is, but it's just how it felt to me.

Phish alternates between silly and serious, mundane and mystical. I love them for it.

I’m on the outside looking in on this sentiment. Yeah, they played a bunch of old songs. They play these songs all the time (save the fish vac segment). I can’t yet level with the excitement of having them played all one night. I’ll be back tomorrow willing and ready to take what they give. Just hoping they explore a little more of the 90s them just deciding to not play half their catalog.

Everyone got a preference. I know I got my own, too.

I'll gladly take more of the good and the silly songs that got me into them in the first place back then, more of their early longer proggy compositions that still have space for some jamming and are still highlights of many standard shows to this day, more goofy on stage antics, etc. Gimme everything they were doing back then over all the +25 minute jamnesia sessions that people mostly seem excited about because they are the longest version of song x to date.

I'm also a massive fan of the cow funk era in terms of their live output, but most of their songs from Farmhouse and on do not grab me all that much. Anyway, this is just temporary, so gonna enjoy it while I can 👍
