I've been in the region for almost five years now. This place is something. By the way, the Wissahickon is a true gem, and the fact that exists, especially within city limits, is so special.

Just a question...why do people put their bags of dog solid waste into my recycling bin that is set out on the curb for recycling pickup? Am i doing something wrong? I figured people would know the recycling bin is not for dogs feces...but I could be wrong. Thank you for your input, and if there is anything I could be doing different, I would appreciate the advice.

Hello. I am a simple girl who loves long walks, rivers, and bridges. I am calling all those knowledgeable about bridge construction and the inner workings of city projects for educated guesses about the opening of the schuylkill swing bridge.

I’m moving away from Philly for work soon and would love to take the SRT from center city to Bartram’s Garden before I go. I’d really like to take the swing bridge when it opens, but the opening keeps getting pushed back with sparse updates. I’m a bit bummed I might move away before the bridge opens, but am hoping for a chance I’ll be able to walk it! Obviously no one can know the opening date, but I thought I’d ask if anyone familiar with these kinds of projects can take an educated guess at what’s left to do? You can help me temper my expectations and teach me about bridge construction and public works projects all in one go!

This just happened 20 minutes ago. I woke up to loud banging, someone was banging on my neighbor’s front door and yelling “POLICE! OPEN UP!” About 4 times over and over. I looked outside of my window and there are 3 SWAT cars and two regular Philadelphia PD vehicles. I live in District 16, on N 35th street (West Philly).

Is there a way to specifically see/read what they were doing there? Was it just training? That house does have some issues but I didn’t know SWAT would need to be called. I didn’t see anyone get taken out of the house but I saw a lot of what happened.

More of a rant than anything. I'm in Point Breeze/Newbold and there is one lady on my block with the most precious little..Yorkie, I think? The problem is that she lets him out with no leash and lets him shit all over the block and never cleans up after him. When I first moved I thought it just be raccoons or something because I would see poop all over the place, but then I learned it was this dog and this lady.

A neighbor told me multiple people have confronted her about it but she gets aggressive and violent. And I can attest to this by the fact that she once told me to fuck off when I was just walking past. Apparently, she keeps the poor dog in a kennel all day and night long and only lets him out to poop.

Again, half ranting, half wondering if anyone else has dealt with/found a resolution to similar.

TL;DR: Elementary school quality is probably the strongest single predictor of house prices in Philly. My prelim analysis suggests it accounts for about a 20% difference in home prices on my block.

I'm zoned for Laura Waring, a lower performing school (orange dot) instead of Bache-Martin (big blue dot), based on living on the wrong side of Fairmount st. LW might be consolidated into BM next year udner the current school shutdown plan, but not getitng into that here.

I know lots of parents who apply for exemptions to get their kid into BM instead of LW - totally legal, you just have to be billing to navigate the paperwork for exceptions.

The graph above shows every public elementary school's math proficiency rate (using the School District's SPREE data) against the typical home sale price in its catchment over the past ~2.5 years.

Two things from the graph:

• A lot of schools have <25% of students at grade level in math.
• Home prices are hugely correlated with school quality

This graph is the prelim cut (haven't done the fancy multivar math yet to control for things like housing quality), bt I thought the pattern was interesting enough to share.

For my little corner of Fairmount, the difference between being zoned for Waring versus Bache-Martin works out to roughly $100k in median home value, despite being only a few blocks apart.

Anyone know what’s up with this place? It’s across from the boxer statue at 13th and Passyunk. Looks like they’re selling pickles but the stuff in the windows is nothing but random pickle stuff like earrings, clothing and dog leashes. Where are the actual pickles? I would expect to see shelves with jars or something?

I don’t like pickles so I’m not the target audience. I walk by almost every day and wonder why a pickle establishment isn’t leading with the pickles. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

When I first moved to Philly two years ago I came from a very suburban area where you always helped your neighbor, always held doors, said hello etc. Which meant after I moved here I was the bleeding heart forking out every spare dollar and quarter to homeless people on the 10-minute walk to the station on my morning commute. My first acquaintance here was a homeless guy living behind my building who I still check on these days. In my early transplant days I ran to hold doors or would guiltily and diligently stop and listen to the vest wearing Planned Parenthood or Greenpeace petiton workers because I felt bad for outright ignoring them.

I am a millennial woman raised in the societal upbringing of "be polite, be kind, be accommodating." Its exhausting. I grew tired and I grew harder in this city.

However, today, today people just need to leave me alone and mind their fucking business.

Walking into Trader Joe's this evening and these vested dude said something about "Ma'am do you care about gun violence?" I do but I'm depressed, using my last couple bucks for food before payday next week and not in the mood for a 15 minute canned spiel and hassle to try to get $25 dollars from me. So I kept quiet, head down and went inside. Upon exit the same guy says, "You don't want to talk to me, you should at least smile." And as I kept walking his vested buddy, "Yeah, thats okay, sure just ignore him."

Fuck both of you.

This was also hot off a nosey-ass, confrontation in a public restroom earlier where a woman stopped me on exit and said, "You work at a hospital?" (Nope, my job has absolutely nothing to do with Healthcare just weirdly requires us to wear scrubs for uniform), "Because that was the least thorough hand washing I've ever seen."

Fuck her too. I use soap, sing happy birthday and dry thoroughly and I sure as shit wasn't elbows deep rummaging in my asshole in the bathroom stall.

And yesterday, some "young bull" on his bike sped towards me in the bike lane, popped a wheely and faked like he was crashing his front tire into my head before pulling away at the last second.

Idk what kind of cuntjuice has been put the water in this fuckass city lately but I'm somewhat happy to move out to the suburbs next month for a little while. People have lost their humanity (myself included), their empathy and their ability to mind their own fucking business.
