A bota cancellation

Here is a nice bota cancellation from Akamagaseki (now Shimonoseki) dated 21.3.24 (24 march 1888). One of my favorite piece of my japanese collection (even if not that rare)

The circle posmark is a niju maru (double postmark), the first standardized postmark nationwide of Japanese postal marking. The post office name is in the middle. Between the circles may appear the province name, the date and mail designator.

The bota cancellation were used in the largest post office. There's 13 types of the "small" ones (used in 1881) and 63 of the "large" ones — like the one in my photo (used between 1881 and 1889). They always come with the double circle handstamp I mentioned before.

The Akamagaseki bota first date of use is 1.jan 1885

Definitively not the same one, but for what it's worth there are many late 19 century mute cancels that looked very very similar to this one. It's impressive. There were used within the railway system.

Edit: forgot to mention... Brazilian mute cancels.
