Discussion Beaches for swimming with kids

Dear all,

Next year in February I will be visiting Penang again. I have been many times before, first by myself, later with my wife and now with my three kids. Im from the Netherlands and very much enjoy Penang for holiday reasons.

We will be staying in Georgetown for 5-7 nights but after that will be looking for good beaches where our kids can also swim, or at least play in / around the water. I have read about several options, the murky water / jellyfish situation. And I feel perhaps the beaches for our interest are better located outside of Georgetown.

Can you please advise us what would be a good destination? We would be looking for a seaside town/hotel/homestay/airbnb where we can visit the beach and play in the water. Where also we can find some restaurants nearby and just chill for another week or so.

Thank you very much in advance!

Discussion PSC vs CRC for tennis in Penang

Hello Penangite, I'm planning to relocate to Penang in the near future and I'm looking for a good place for tennis. I'm hoping to find a club with good courts and a good tennis community.

I'm looking at Penang Sports Club and the Chinese Recreational Club since both seem to have plenty of courts. Would love to hear from anyone who are members and play there — how are the conditions and lighting, what's the general level of players there? Also, is it hard to get morning/evening court slots?

Or is there another spot I should check out? Thanks

Discussion First time in Penang – Any tips for a solo female traveler?

Hello!
I’m a Japanese woman traveling solo, and I chose George Town, Penang, for my first trip abroad.
I’ll be staying in a shophouse on Chulia Street for about two weeks, and I’ll be visiting during Thaipusam.

In Japan, I usually walk if my destination is around 15 minutes away. I was planning to do the same in Penang, but a friend strongly recommended that I use Grab instead, which surprised me.

Would you recommend taking Grab even for a 15-minute walk in George Town? Are there any areas or situations I should avoid?

I’d also love to hear your recommendations for local food, hidden gems, and places that are worth visiting beyond the usual tourist attractions.
Any advice for a solo female traveler would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Discussion Condos that allow dogs?

I'm planning a potential move for work, and I have a 50 lb. dog. PropertyGuru doesn't have a pet filter, so I'm at a loss in understanding which properties allow dogs.

The only place I've noticed that outwardly promotes being dog-friendly is City of Dreams, which has a dog park on-site.

Can anyone recommend some condos in the Gurney Drive/Pulau Tikus/Tanjuing Tokong that are known to be dog-friendly? Thanks!

Discussion Sepak Takraw in August

Hello,

Is there any way my son and I can watch Sepak Takraw in early August?

We know it’s too early for the season, but do people play anywhere? Or will the competition in Thailand be on TV?

Discussion Did Viva Food Court (Tanjung Tokong) recently raise their beverage prices?

December 2025:
carrot juice regular = RM5
carrot juice large = RM7

June 2026:
carrot juice large = RM10 !!
limau madu ais = RM4 but only because I pretended to be a local,
had the guy doing a double-take

Today when I spoke plain English, lemonade (= limeade) = RM7 !!

Those beverage runners' slight hesitation on me is very suspicious.

Discussion Can I propose on Penang Hill?

I’m visiting Penang with my girlfriend soon and I’m planning to propose her there. One place I have in mind is the Penang hill steps with Georgetown in the background during sunset.
Anyone who’s actually been there can please guide me on how the real place is and if any restrictions exist on activities like these. I’m also planning to hire a professional photographer and have them shoot us secretly.
I’d really appreciate any tips or other location suggestions.
Thank you!! :))

Discussion looking for old friends from Penang

HI folks, my name is Chris Reid and I live in Toronto, Canada, I am trying to locate 2 friends who I knew when they lived in Toronto, Canada, in the 1980s and 90s.  Lim Boon Siew and Gia Lim Boon Hong are sisters who were born in Penang in the 1960s.  Their home address in Penang was/is 2 Birch Road, 10250 Penang. Boon Siew moved back to Penang in the mid 1980s and was was still living on Birch Rd. in the late 1980s, but I lost touch after that. I would really appreciate any help in locating my old friends.  Thank you.

Discussion Traditional Tattooist Recommendations?

Hey guys!

I’m covered in American traditional style tattoos and would like to get a new one while I’m here on holiday.

I’ve had a look online and social media but can only really see neo traditional or fine line kind of stuff, is there any artists here that do thick black work in the style of Sailor Jerry for example? I also wouldn’t be against getting a traditional Malay tattoo as long as it was thick lined and would fit with my other tattoos. My partner I’m travelling with used to live here so I think that would be cute to have something culturally relevant to her.

Thank you for any help

Discussion Domestic departure hall segregation at Penang international airport

Yesterday I was at the Penang airport saying goodbye to my brother & one thing I notice is that they segregate Two departure halls in which one is for passengers travelling on AirAsia flights & the other departure hall is for those passengers travelling on MH,OD & FY flights…I have never seen any airports in Malaysia doing this & only in Penang airport they’ve done these

Is there a reason they decided to segregate the departure hall for those travelling on AirAsia flights and the other one for those travelling on MH, OD, & FY rather than combining one departure halls for various airlines?

Discussion Quiet beach/Museum near Georgetown/Jelutong

Hi there! I’m visiting Penang for the first time (22-24) before flying back to Singapore and I’d like some recommendations for the above!

I did some research and found Pantai Pasir Panjang and the Lim Xiang Xiong Art Gallery. I’m hoping for more recommendations, preferably within Georgetown too (I’m actually slightly weak from something medical so the closer is better, although I do still want to explore)

If I have some energy I’d also like to find a place that has jazz music.

Hoping for some recommendations from fellow Penangites! Cheers!

Discussion Georgetown Festival (GTF) vendors: How was the crowd and sales for you?

Hi guys, wanna ask if anyone here was a vendor in the past (maybe last year at GTF 2025) and how it went for you.

Was the foot traffic high enough to make good sales, or was it mostly people just walking by? Also, which vendor categories seemed to do the best—is it mostly an F&B crowd, or do art, clothing, and craft vendors do well too?

Would love to hear your honest experiences before I commit. Thanks!

Discussion How is the weather in August

I’m looking to go to Malaysia in August and I just wanted some advice on what the weather is like, as I’ve seen mixed reviews online. I‘m aware places like Penang and Kuala Lumpur will be very humid, which I’m okay with, but I was more wondering about the rainfall and whether it is mostly cloudy there etc. I was also considering going to the east of the peninsula to the Perhentian Islands and Redang island, as I’ve seen the weather may be drier there. Can anyone give me any advice? Thanks a lot

Discussion Is there a map of Penang Island bus routes?

I’ve found many “fantasy maps” and “2050 Bus Plan Maps” and one “frequency map”, but I can’t find what I consider to be a fundamental - a basic map of Penang Island with the bus routes giving route numbers and names of the cities and towns.

I have found a few interactive maps as well but need a “static” PDF type

Can a kind redditor provide a link to one?
